After the storm the Tradition got out on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday fishing was a little on the tough side with 40 barracuda for 15 anglers, but those who came on Friday were greeted with fantastic fishing with limits at 10 per person for 20 anglers. Those who planned on fishing with us on Saturday hoped for more of the same.
The day started out with Morgon calling the anglers by order of reservation down to the boat, and once we they were all aboard Morgon started selling tickets while I sold gunny sacks. Then, we headed off up the coast to meet the Larry Derr on the In-Seine to pick up some great chum bait consisting of small anchovies, complimenting the sardines we already had aboard. Once loaded up with bait, we headed out to find the barracuda.
Captain Steven Konrady then turned his sights looking for bird life, and he quickly found some, resulting in a nice little stop on the skinnies to start things off. Most fish caught on the first stop were caught on the Megabait. Unfortunately, this spot of fish quickly sank out, so we went on looking for more.
We looked and looked but we couldn’t find another school until we got called in by the Redondo Special that the barracuda, in the area we got them earlier, had come up again. So we charged for that area and starting putting a hurting on the barracuda. I was fishing a Tady C along with Steve-O’s son, Little Steve-O, and we caught our fair share on that jig. I had one that almost sucked the jig all the way down, with maybe a quarter of the jig sticking out of its mouth. Others back toward the stern and on the stern were also slaying away, but after a while the school would move on, so we had to run and gun to get back on them.
By this time, I couldn’t buy another bite on the Tady C, so I switched to the Pep 5 that worked very well for me last week. As we spun a circle to start a chum line, I casted out in the circle and watched a nice gar blow up on my jig, and another bite began. However, they quickly sunk out but they were still under the boat. I started to let my Pep 5 sink well over a minute and I got two nice gar right in a row down deep. But again they quickly scattered and the fleet wasn’t doing much in the area, so we went on the hunt.
We finally arrived in an area with a great mark of barracuda and started putting more hurt on them. Unfortunately there were a lot of giant Fidos in this area that pushed the fish down, but we still caught a lot of nice fish, but with a lot more smaller fish, even a few shorts, which were safely released. After a while it was time to head home, and jackpot was weighed up and Morgon and Anthony started filleting fish.
It was a fantastic day out on the water, and we got a final count of 268 Barracuda and 1 Sand Bass for 38 anglers. Even the guys fishing straight up and down caught some barracuda today, and a few were even caught on small diamond jigs. I ended up with nine barracuda for the day, one legal lost at the boat, and one short. One guy fishing a Megabait back by the stern caught 14 barracuda (keeping only ten). All in all, it was a fantastic day of fishing and I hope it continues.
The Tradition crew takes pride in what they do, and that is trying their hardest to put you on the fish! From Captain Steven Konrady up in the wheelhouse to Morgon and Anthony on deck and Alex up in the galley cooking, the Tradition is a team operation and they will try their best to make sure your fishing experience is a great one. The Tradition is on line daily for ¾ day trips leaving at 6am and returning around 3:30 or 4pm. During the summer, we will possibly be on line for twilight trips 7 nights a week leaving at 6pm. Come on out on the Tradition, fishing will be good this summer!
In related news, Redondo Sportfishing will reopen this week with new management. The new owners are Larry Derr from In-Seine Bait, along with his wife. Morgon and Anthony starting to fillet the barracuda…The key to keeping your barracuda as fresh as possible is to hang them on the gunny sack hook with a looped fishing line. As soon as you catch them, pop a gill so they can bleed and make sure they get watered frequently. That way the barracuda should be in very good to prime condition, all ready for the grill, BBQ, or to be soaked in citrus to make some awesome ceviche!
