Late Report with Wingnuts solo surf report motivated me to get out and do a solo surf mission. Got to the beach later than I wanted 8am and started working the beach. Instead of starting off with the norm LCs i threw a 7in yozouri jerk bait hoping for big bait big fish with no love. I swiched over to the lc, then crock, then castmaster, dropshot. What could I say it was a slow day but I could not suck it up and take the skunk so I continued to fish harder. One thing about me is when the fish are biting I fish hard when they are not biting I fish harder. I stuck it out and saw some birds working the boiler rocks down the bank. So I moved to the rocky area and I swiched back to the Kastmaster due to the ripping current this way I could work the lower water column. At about 1:30 pm I finally get my first hit the fish thumped it hard but no hookup then RE-BITE HOOKUP!!!! I instantly knew it was a solid fish Hard thumping headshakes the fish kept dogging me on the bottom. I thought to myself with headshakes like this it must be a huge halibut. I was standing on top of rocks while fighting the fish and thought to myself how the heck am I going to land this fish while dodging the big waves coming at me on the rocks? Heck who knows ill figure it out when I see the fish. The fish gets with 15ft of the shore and dogs me into the rocks S*** I was pulling on it at all angles and it will not come out. My heart was thumping 100mile per hour and I was like please let me at least see the fish. I put it in freespool and the fish swims out. Wrong decision sucker.... I finally see the fish it was a solid calico now for the the hard part landing the fish. First I tried to bounce the fish it was too heavy for my gear to bouce, then i said heck with it I'll go down to the water and grab it but everytime I went down to grab it I see a huge wave will come up at me and I would have to run back up the rocks. Ok plan B did not work plan C let the waves surf the fish on the rocks cha ching right on!

5 1/2 lb calico off the rocks! My first shore calico and probably going to be my PB shore calico for a while.

Fished for another hour and a half landed one more about 2-3lbs and called it a day close to 3pm.

Sheesh what a long surf session but I set a goal to go surf fishing and catch fish and I would of stayed till dawn if I didnt.

Somtimes its easy and somtimes you have to put in work either way its always going to be a great day on the water because im fishing.

Go get em guys.

Jonathan,

Nice "Toad Checker" no pun intended while standing on those rocks. I have spent a few hours on those rocks also thinking that there might be a nice specimen for the taking! Definitely some deep crevices and desired environment with the weeds just outside for a nice ambush attack by a nicer model like that!

Those rocks are treacherous and slippery when they are well above the waterline and dry but those conditions look downright scary to me!

Congrats on the nice solo attack and report and pics!

Jonathan, you've been sticking huge bass lately! Major dedication fishing in those conditions, and you were rewarded with a very fat shore calico for your efforts. Good job man!

Sweet Calico Jonathan... you've been tearing it up! :Envious:
I've been in a few of those precarious situations trying to land a fish myself.
It was cool seeing you out there this morning bro for our casting practice session. :Big Smile:
As for the intel on the "other" location... over 20 shorts and a legal, decent numbers, looks like we hit up the wrong spot.

Nice fish Jonathan. Always going the extra mile and that is often what it takes to score a toad.. Some days no matter how far you go it's still not enough. It kind of reminds of that first time we went kayaking years ago. We sat it out on the kelp on a cold winter day for most the day with out even a bite. A storm was moving in and we never even saw the sun once that day but the water was flat glass all day. It looked like it was to start pouring at any minute and we stuck it out until finally the current started moving and when it did the BIG calicos started chewing. The rain started coming down the gray turned to dark night just as landed on the beach. Hard earned catches are often the most rewarding..

Nice Calico Jonathan! even nicer considering the feat of catching that beast at that spot with the waves as big as they were! That would be a bad place to eat it! be careful!

That's a really nice fish and such an epic battle landing it. Great job bro.

@Arthur: That picture with Bones' fish got me rolling on the floor, lol. Did he get it on the dropshot?? He's truly the dropshot master

Jonathan,

Great outing bro, it was definitely crazy out there in the surf, the shore was pounding and there was some huge waves. Sure didnt stop you tho and it goes to show that if your persistent, you will succeed. Thats a nice size checker for sure. very nice bro.

Mike, dude, nice PB BWBS (Beach whale bathing suit) and on the dropshot too! verrrrrryyy nice.
