Jason and I were heading down south to celebrate our 5 year anniversary :Romance: but of course we had to plan a day of fishing into our trip! Since we were heading into Murrietta Angler's territory, we hit him up and we all decided to meet on Friday for a day of surf fishing. :Big Grin:

We didn't have much luck with hali surf sessions in the past and we were looking to catch our first legals from the surf. In short, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED and then some. Many many thanks to Murrieta Angler (Robert) for all your surf fishing tips and pointers. It was a lot of fun fishing with you... we definitely learned a lot and had a great time doing it.

Now for the long version. :Big Grin:

Arrived at the spot at the agreed time of 5:30am to find Robert's silhouette already fishing in the graylight. Quickly geared up and we were on our way. Robert was the first to hook up but the short hali shook off and washed away as he was bringing it up. We all laid eyes on it so it counted! :Big Grin:

Shortly after I managed my 2nd ever surf hali.

Same fish

Minutes later, before the boys notice I hooked up again, I pull in this beast!
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00218.jpg

It came in so easily I thought it was another shortie...

But no!!
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00219.jpg

It turned out to be my FIRST LEGAL FROM THE SURF AND PB FLATTIE!! :Big Smile:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00253.jpg

Robert and I were already on the boards but Jason was struggling for a bigger model. He was under a lot of pressure since Robert and I caught some good-sized fish and PBs... BUT THEN....

BOOM!!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00256.jpg

Awww.. it's ok, the day's still young.

Pretty soon this guy finds my lure

And again, the release.

Robert goes on to catch 3 short halis in a row! Nice job!! (one not pictured)

THEN...

BENDO!! His rod and face say it's not a perch this time.

Jason's FIRST LEGAL FROM THE SURF AND PB!!! :Big Smile:
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00278.jpg

We were both so happy we caught our first surf legals!! :High Five:
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00279.jpg

And of course, the release.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00280.jpg

Mystery fish: Right after Jason's release, I get slammed by something BIG. My drag starts to scream and I get the feeling it's not a halibut. It starts pulling me to the right and Robert tells me to follow it. 1, 2, 3 steps later, the drag stops and my line goes slack. It took me a while to get over it.

But then I caught my 5th hali of the day.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00285.jpg

Robert's 5th

Jason's 2nd
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00294.jpg

After the release, Robert's 6th thought we couldn't see him in the shallows.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00301.jpg

It was getting rough out there and being so short I was getting sore trying to wade out as far as I could and keep my arms above water. :Embarrassed: I took a little break and snapped this pic of the boys doing their thing.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00297.jpg

The bite was slowing down so after about 6 hours of fishing, we decided to break for lunch.

I thought waders were made to keep the water out... not IN.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00302.jpg

We all decided on breakfast for lunch, yum!
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00309.jpg

Good fishing, good company, and good food... we couldn't ask for anything more.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00311.jpg

After lunch we set out to our 2nd spot. Robert went ahead and caught 1 perch and 1 yellowfin croaker as Jason was sharpening/reshaping my banged-up hooks.

Shortly after we arrived, Jason came up on this YFC
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00320.jpg

My 6th and final hali of the day
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00322.jpg

Robert caught 2 more of these

Jason's last fish of the day
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/SD%20Fishing/DSC00324.jpg

TOTAL FISH COUNT:
14 halis!!
5 BSPs
4 YFCs
1 shovelnose
1 stingray

Robert's mixed bag:
6 halis
3 YFCs
1 PB shovelnose
1 stingray
1 perchie

Jason:
2 halis (1 legal with PB 25")
4 perchies
1 YFC

Me:
6 halis (2 legals with PB 28.5")

Jason and I would have to say this one of our best days ever! We were surprised with how hot a hali bite could get in the surf! This outing has definitely turned us onto surf fishing and we will be back for more SOON.

Thanks again, Robert, for everything. We wouldn't have been able to accomplish our goal without you. We appreciate your help and we had a blast fishing and hanging out with you. Hope to fish with you again soon!

Jason & Tess,
I had a really good time with the both of you.
You are 2 of the nicest people I have met and look forward to fishing with you again in the near future.
Tess,
You are a fishing machine, the way you handled that 28+ hali was just too funny. I can't believe you brought that thing in so fast...:Envious:
I also liked the fact that you got pretty upset when you farmed your first halibut, the expletives were flying so fast I couldn't keep up with them...
Do you kiss your boyfriend with that dirty mouth....J/K :Big Grin:

Jason,
Bro, you are a true gentleman with the way you took care of Tess the whole day.
It was kind of funny though cause as soon as she spooled her line you wou grab her rod, she would grab yours, proceed to fish, catch a fish while the whole time you were still fixing whatever problem there was with her rod...
I was also very glad that you got a legal halibut, I couldn't handle the ribbing you got from Tess for only catching the perch...:Thumbs Up:
Now that the both of you have a few Southern Spots I expect to see more reports from the both of you.
There are still other places I didn't get to show you, but that will have to wait for another day.

Again, the pleasure was mine that day and my hat goes off to you for a job well done withe the fish..:Group Hug:

Take Care & God Bless You Both,

Robert

Now that's the perfect anniversary present from Poseidon. :Envious:
How awesome is that, both of you getting your first and personal best surf Halibut in the same session. Hollywood couldn't have written a better script. :Big Grin:
Well done Robert, U da man!

You guys led the first wave of the assault and we did the mop up mission the next day.
NINE legal Halibut in two days... devastating numbers.

Very cool to release your personal best fish... that is very S.W.A.T. of you guys. :Applause:
Karma... you will see... Hope to share the sand with the two of you someday.

Tess, that poor LC went through hell and back... retire it and check your PM.

Tess and Jaysun, what can I say? thats some major butt action you guys got going there. How do you guys like them hali's over the bass in the bay? they're pretty nice eh!? For your second outing in the surf, those are some nice numbers and quality you guys got. You should be proud. You were in good hands heading out there with Robert, he knows his stuff when it comes to his turf. Keep up the good work, I'm sure I'll see you guys soon. :Secret:

Robert, BRO! your a beast. The only thing you needed to pull out of the surf to complete the day was a striper  Great bag of multiple species man, very nice. Way to show Tess and Jaysun the ropes man, they didn't look one bit shabby.

Until our outing, I don't think I've ever heard a fisherman say,

"Why am I only catching halis?"
"Why don't the perchies want my lure?" :???:

Unbelievable.. Geez, you can't please anyone these days. :Rolls Eyes:

Awesome job out there honey! I regret not getting a picture of the expression on your face when you pulled the big girl in. But how could I? It was impossible to get a hold of the camera in your wader pocket, while you were jumping up and down and running around in circles.

The girly girl showed the boys how it's done by catching multiple legals and the big fish of the day. I don't have to worry about you anymore when we're fishing. The only thing I worry about now is getting outfished by you.. :Surprised:

Robert, thanks again for everything. We had a lot of fun fishing with you and learned a lot in the process. We had a blast. I hope we can do it again soon.

Tesserz, Jaysuun, Robert,

Well after seeing Part 2 posted by SWAT, I was readily waiting part one! With out part one, part two would not have been!

All I can say is it looked like some awesome day's down south in the surf!

Great to see Robert host you on that "Special Day" and put you on a very successful bite! Congrats to both of you on getting your first Legal Flatties as well a PB'S! :Thumbs Up:

Tesserz,

Some times you take what Poseidon offers with no complaints!
"Why am I only catching halis?"
"Why don't the perchies want my lure?"

Jaysuuun,

Congrats on the mixed bag and PB Flattie!

Robert,

Thanks for helping the new recruits to a great day! And a nice day for your self also!

We gladly released those fish... that way the next guys that come along can hopefully have the same thrill that we did. As you guys experienced the following day.

Yep that lure took a lot of abuse... but although it was thoroughly thrashed, the little guy kept catching me fish! :Surprised: I may have to hold off on retiring it... it's my luckiest lucky craft... probably because of where it came from. And I did check my pm, thanks.

We both hope to see you out in the surf sometime.

LOL ya, we did get pretty good butt action. Surf fishing itself is a hundred times more difficult cauz I actually had to work! :Rolls Eyes: I couldn't just sit back and let Jason do all the fish finding this time. :Secret: hahah. But hali hunting in the surf and searching for piggie spotties in the bay both have the same thrill. But we definitely wouldn't have been able to do it without Robert's guidance. Hope to see you out there sometime soon. :Big Grin:

We were on a hali mission and we succeeded with flying colors! All thanks to Robert of course.

We've had some bad days on the surf but good days like this will give us something to shoot for in our future surf sessions. Next time you hold the camera since I get pretty busy reeling in all the fish.

LOL thanks Sid. And you'd have to thank Jason for getting me on fishing. I used to think it was boring and a huge waste of time... of course that's when I never caught anything. But after teaching me that it takes more than just dropping a piece of shrimp into the water at the pier and waiting all day for a bite... many successful outings later he got me hooked.

Steve

Awesome job by two very nice people. Actually three if you want to count Robert...LOL
JK buddy......
When I heard about your fantastic day from Arthur it was heartwarming. I must say that Tess and Jason are a great model for fishing couples everywhere. A very rare relationship to say the least.
Great to see all of the smiles and the Tesserized style report....Hey girl.....Where is the colored thumb tape?
Kinda strange to see you two standing on the sand but if you guys fish the surf the same way that you kill it in the harbors......The FNN is going to be blessed with some great surf reports from you two !
Props to you both for the CPR's of the PB's.......That's SWAT style....Keep it up and you guys will earn your stripes in no time!
OH.....

This is one AWESOME pic!

Robert
<><

Robert, I agree with you Tess is a fishing machine! She doesn't reel fish in, she HAULS them in! Stay out of her way during a good bite! And when she loses or farms a fish ... put on your ear muffs!

She stuck with her winning Hunting Giants II LC all day, so when you saw me taking a time out, I was just switching out my LC so I could keep up with you guys! :Surprised:

I was using some of my lighter colored LC's, like the Ghost White Seabass pattern. When the fish weren't giving me any love, I joined the bandwagon and tied on a pattern similar to what you and Tess were throwing out. I couldn't let you guys catch ALL the butts!

It was a pleasure fishing with you, and we must do it again sometime.
BTW Tess and I got a few more LC patterns that we are dying to try out. Did you say there was a few other places you didn't get to show us?

Thanks. A gift like that is priceless.

Thanks Bones. Our past few surf ventures haven't been the best and we've felt a little out of place being on the sand as opposed to the harbors. I think we've learned a lot from this outing and it has instilled a lot of confidence for future outings to come. I think we'll take a break from harbor fishing for awhile.

That pic was taken with our new Sony waterproof camera. Has a bunch of cool features on it. Tess was unaware of the strange guy in the background.

Hope to share the sand with you soon.

Good going guys. Tess you never cease to amaze as always. Been a while since our run into each other at sports authority. Good to see that you and Jason are still killing it out on the water. Keep it up.
