Lake Isabella report May 13th and 14th

Started out before sunrise Friday. Began the day by North Fork marina hitting the submerged trees and structure. We threw everything. Drop shot, jigs, spinners, deep cranks. Flukes. Nada.

Then around 10am got a hit on a albino fluke with a spinner jig head by camp 9.

Not what I was going for but I'll take it!


The wind started picking up around 2 pm and my bro started peppering the shore by Boulder Gulch with his 1/4 silver rattle trap and we finally got a LMB.

We were working our way back towards French Gulch when he hit another with the same pattern

Of course I tied mine on after his 3rd LMB while we were under the bridge at French Gulch and got a nice size crappie.

Right after he got one as well, so we kept them both since our cousins were nailing trout and crappie trolling by Rocky Point.


That was pretty much it. 10 hours on the water and 2 crappie, 3 LMB and 1 cat.


We hit the lake sat by 8am and by Noon the wind was ripping. Skunked. We didn't even think of fishing Sun because the weather was supposed to be so bad, but when I got to the marina at noon to get the boat, the lake was glass and NO ONE was on it... Oh well.
It was also 20 degrees colder then when we got there Thurs and there was snow on the mountains from the overnight rain. Really pretty, but typical Isabella in spring in regards to fishing.

Weather is really screwy lately, throwing the bite off everytime it changes. The crappie had been biting pretty good out there earlier. Atleast you caught something and it looks like a nice day on the water.

Thanks for the report. I have a question how do you like the Tracker? I am looking into buying a bass boat and dont want to spend 50000 bucks.

The tracker is great for what it is. Great size live well. Rod storage is pretty ample. Rides excellent in chop. I have a 60 HP Merc on it and get up to 35 mph. Bought it for less than $10k used 3 years ago.

I would love a bigger boat like a Ranger, but if fits perfect between my house and next door neighbors fence...

I have no complaints except there is no room for a 3rd battery in the rear...

How much are you wanting to spend? There are alot of used fiberglass bass boats out there right now for decent prices. In my opinion the ride difference, especially in rough water, between glass and aluminum is huge, just something to consider.

Good point. I went aluminum because we fish the colorado river a lot and I can't even count how many times I have hit lay downs and rocks at full speed. I didn't want to go fiberglass but Basscat makes some great smaller boats Clayrog27...

No doubt about it, the aluminum ones can generally take a "Wack" from a rock or tree better than a glass one. They are also considerably lighter than the glass ones making them easier to tow. I also cant deny that there are times that I wouldnt take my 2008 Champion deep into brush because I didnt want to take a chance of scratching it whereas in my old Champion I wouldnt think twice about it.

Either fiberglass or aluminum, In my opinion, get exactly what you want the first time so you dont have any regrets.

Yeah i am looking at a used javelin its 17' 2003 with a 2006 115 merc. the guy is asking 10k it has alot of extras. very low hours.
