Hey guys,
I had about 2 hours this morning to fish before the drywaller arrived at my place. So, I decided to hit Newport Harbor, since I haven’t fished down there in a LONG time. Then, if I had time, stop on the way home for a super quick BSP session.
Arrive in NP Harbor, to see that the tide was VERY low! I knew it was going to be tough, but I was determined to catch a fish in the short time that I had. So I found a parking spot, and headed to the bay.
Today’s Arsenal for NPH:
1. Phenix MBX w/Shimano Stradic 2500 8 lb XXX.
2. Drop Shot Rig 1/0 Owner Worm Hook ¼ oz d/s sinker
3. GULP! 4 inch Shrimp Nuclear Chicken

Made a few casts for nothing, then moved down the shore, looking for more places to pitch the rig. Found a nice area, and made a cast. Nothing…..until I looked down and saw about a 2 inch Spottie getting violent with my GULP! Shrimp! Lol..he was trying SO hard to eat that thing, but the Shrimp was twice as big as him. I played with the lil Spottie a few more minutes, and looked at the time. Already been 30 mintues, and I knew if I wanted to get my quick BSP session in, that I had to leave very soon. Walked back down the beach, found an area in between 2 boats, and pitched between them. Worked it back slowly, and as I was between the two boats….tap! tap! I set the hook HARD and the fight was on!
The fish tried to get my under each boat, but was not match for the Phenix and Stradic. It made a couple of nice, short runs, peeling a little drag. With the head shakes, I knew what it was. Short time later, I landed my Skunk Buster for the day! It INHALED the GULP! Lol….
LIL SHORTY…ABOUT 16 INCHES…GREAT FIGHT!

Took a pic, released the fish, and worked my way down the beach. I saw another zone I wanted to fish real quick, before I had to leave. So I made my way down the shore, and made a PERFECT cast along the dock. Worked the d/s back, and on the up pull, I felt a solid hit!! Set the hook HARD, and the fish was on. This one pulled VERY hard, taking drag, and headed towards the pilings under the dock. Um, no, I was not going to lose this fish, it felt solid, so I leaned back HARD on the fish, and got it to turn. At one point, it was thumping so hard, all I could do was hold on, and let it thump, lol. After an absolute EXCELLENT battle, I drug this up onto the shore!
15 ½ INCHES OF SOLID SPOTTED BAY BASS!!

Took a few pics, and released the fish, unharmed, back into the bay. That was FUN, its been way too long since I’ve hooked a landed a nice Spottie! But, it was time to start heading home, and I wanted to make a quick stop at the spot. So I jumped in my truck, and headed towards home.
A short time later, I arrived at the spot, and walked to the water. Big surf today, and, hmmm..how can I explain this?? The water was swirling like a washing machine, lol. Very hard left surge, and big surf.

So I made my first cast into the zone, and got bit hard! I set the hook, and the fish pulled pretty hard..then spit the hook…lol…damn it!!
Long story short, I was there about 20 mintues or so, and landed 8 dinks, and lost that nicer one on the first cast.
Time to get home to meet the drywaller. I think I prob fished about an hour and a half total, but it was pretty good.
Total Count:
1-15 ½ inch spottie
1-16 inch halibut
8-dink BSP
Until next time….
