Well, I was feeling quite good after a local surf fishing mission on Friday morning. Successful in securing a legal Halibut for my Mom for Mother's day dinner. I went home, filleted the Flattie, put it in the freezer and headed to the gym. Came home a little while later only to find the little woman has cooked it up for dinner. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/a11.gif "Surprise!" she says. Yes, I guess you could say that I was surprised... lol
Trying my best to hide my shock & disbelief, I put on my best smile and we sat down and ate Mom's Mother's Day Halibut. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/04.gif

After news of the incident hit the wire, I immediately received several texts and PM's from some of my S.W.A.T. Brothers. Here are some of their comments.
"Don't even trip, we got you covered tomorrow..."
"No worries man, we'll get you handled tomorrow..."
"We've got your back buddy, we'll get you another one..."
"I got plenty of Halibut fillets in my freezer if you need to go to Plan B..." Hahahaha, thanks Mikey!

Friday morning I had a great surf session at a local spot with John (Klocked). We racked up four legal Halibut and a handful of shorts in just a few hours. Common sense dictates that I should head back to that exact A.O. for my best chance at getting a replacement Hali for Mom. Only one problem, I already promised Mikey (Exfactor), that I would drive up to Santa Barbara to fish with him on Saturday. After talking on the phone with Mikey, he insisted that I stay local and try to get that legal and don't worry about coming up. I told Mikey that I appreciate the understanding, but I'm coming up anyway. It's not always about catching fish, sometimes it's about the company you wish to keep and I always keep my word. http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/10001/smile.gif I will be hitting the surf with four other talented anglers, each one so generously offered to hand over any legal Flattie they catch to me for my Mom. I will have a total of five sticks in the surf, Basically quadruple my chances to get a legal Hali. :Dancing Banana:

Most people would probably head right back to the local spot, but I feel that if it was meant to be, I will have a legal Halibut for Mom, no matter where I go... it's in God's hands.
An eternal optimist, I have faith in things I cannot see. I think that's one of the problems in today's world, the lack of faith... Lack of faith in yourself, lack of faith in each other and lack of faith in God. If you want to see an example of what I'm talking about, take a look at the "Official Religion" thread in the General Section.

I was really looking forward to writting this report. Even though, it was far from an epic session and I didn't catch anything significant. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that everybody outfished me by a good margin yesterday. But what happened yesterday, was quite amazing and I will do my best to give you guys an idea of how much it touched me. :Group Hug:

Anyways, so the mission begins... I picked up Mike (Bones) at 4:00am Saturday morning and we make the drive North on the 101. Meeting us at the A.O. at greylight would be Mikey (Exfactor), Roy (Q3Fishboy) and Bill (Which Way Out). As we gathered on the beach Mikey says, "Let's get to work, we need to get your Mom her Halibut..." :Big Grin:
"For Mom..." I whispered to myself and into the surf we all went...

About noon, after hitting several spots and catching nothing but monster Perch but still no Halibut. We decided to hit one last spot to see if we can pull a Rabbit out of the hat. Whatever happen, happens... At this point, I was ready to get out of my waders, grab some hot lunch and then go raid Mikey's freezer for some Halibut fillets for Mom.

We get to the area, walk down to the sand and spread out to work the mile long stretch of beach. This would be our last stand, now or never...
As Mikey & I were walking the sand together, we got lost in conversation and fell way behind the rest of the guys. Mike Roy and Bill were working their way far ahead of us. About an hour passed by and we looked down the beach to see them far away in the distance. Doesn't look like they were having any luck and Mikey and I didn't get so much as a perch bump for the last hour. So we decided to back out of the surf to go get the rest of the crew and head for lunch.

What happened next was nothing short of spectacular...
I walk up and called out to Mike, Roy and Bill to get out of the surf, it's lunch time! Bill backs out first, walks up to me and asks me for my camera. I asked him why and he says he just wants to take a picture of me and Roy. I was like, uhhh... okay. I handed him my camera and watched Roy as he starts backing out of the surf. Roy nonchalantly wades out in my direction, as he got closer to me I saw something dangling from the game clip on his side. I pointed to it and said "What is that...?!?" Roy replied, "What do you think it is? It's a Halibut for your Mom!"
OMG, I stood there stunned in silence for a moment with my jaw wide open... yeah, for once I was speechless... lol.
Everybody let out a roar of laughter as I stood there shaking my head in disbelief. Unbelievable, my boys came through for me... Roy then told me that he caught the Hali on the LC that I gave him earlier in the day. What goes around, comes around... I reach in my pack, pulled out my Pelican case full of LC's, handed it to him and said, "Thank you, and welcome to S.W.A.T. kid..." Priceless memories and Mom got her Halibut for Mother's Day. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-cool11.gif

Mikey, we did it buddy and I didn't even have to go to Plan B and raid your freezer. Thank you for taking us on a beautiful guided trip to some new areas in your backyard. You are indeed our Yoda of the Ocean. :Big Grin:

Mike, thank you for taking the drive North with me buddy. I know that you could have easily hit the local hot spot yourself. Thanks for the company my friend.

Roy, you've come a long way young man. I remember when I first met you about 4 years ago riding your bicycle down to that beach to fish. You've become quite a talented young angler and I appreciate your friendhip over the years. Thank you once again for coming through in a clutch for me and I hope those LC's brings you MANY more legals!

Bill, finally we meet. A pleasure fishing with you, you are every bit as genuine and nice in person as you are thru PM's. Thank you for being my eyes and ears in the SB area and I hope we can fish again soon. Don't forget to PM me your mailing address. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/03.gif

I hope everybody had a great Mother's Day weekend... mine was quite unforgettable.

I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be "happy." I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be compassionate. It is, above all, to matter and to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all.

Arthur,

After hearing of the details of you trip to secure that "Mothers Day Meal" and the following details of having to try to secure another replacement would have made me feel sorry for you! But we all know that you are 1 lucky guy and those that you have been so generous to in the past few years would have your back on this one!

I was given the green light to go north with you guys but had a felling that I should stay home!

What a great way to end the day than with the way the S.W.A.T. Team keep it as a surprise!

Great work out there Brothers!

Mikey, Nice cup holder you got there in your waders. Was that hot chocolate?
That shovel nose and leo were some nice looking sharks. i look forward to the day I can make it up there to fish with you.

One of the few times that we've gotten Arthur! Bones is still trying to cast over his line, and make him tug, but hard to sneak up on a jedi! Yep, his expression was the best part of the day. Like the Opie and Andy pic walking down the beach, was wistling the theme song as we walked. lol My turn to come down next time brotha, and as always, thanks for knowing how to shine, and place smiles on everyones faces.

Awesome report Arthur!
Yesterday was the tough one and I tried so hard to come through for you when I pounded that area of boilers with 50 casts right ahead of Roy and then he steps up to the same spot right behind me and sticks that nice legal on a few quick casts. The first humble words out of his mouth were " Now I can FINALLY repay Arthur for all he has done ! "
What is so great when we get a group of us together like yesterday is that I always smile for the whole next day just thinking about the brotherhood we have developed. I'm proud to be part of the crew.
Roy...... Welcome to the SWAT brotherhood my friend. You have earned your wings young man !
Mikey....Always a blast fishing with you. Time for you to head south and bring a few surface irons for the spot I reconed today. Bill.....Great meeting you and talking with you most of the day. Keep up the good work with Roy!
Arthur....Thanks for the friendship and inspiration in life. You truely are amazing in both your profession and in the surf. Very cool new rods with those tiny micro guides......What the hell is next buddy?

Wait until I take you to a spot I reconed today and got my 25" legal in just one hour. Your gonna go crazy when you see this terrain bro.

As a good buddy of mine once said "Epic Day" I just wish I could of trowed down that HB. We all fished hard in some of the hardest surf I've ever fished and I wouldn't of changed it for anything.
Nearly 2 years on FNN and finally meet some non locals. Mike you have great stories and can't wait to hear more of your escapades with WN. Mikey(local) you salty dog, your as tough as nails. I could hardly keep up with you. I didn't know you got a Leo, that's cool. Roy the last few weeks fishing with ya has been lots of fun and lets keep it going. Its fun learning from a young person about the surf fishing. You ever need anything just call.
WingNut what can I say... Your a fishing machine. At times I looked up and around to see where everyone was and you were always plugging away with the never give up attitude. I can see why you take an assault force with you. That was a long day, I don't know how you had the energy to drive home. Hope the day with your Mom was all you ever wanted. Fish with you and the team anytime.

Arthur,

I thought I'd take a look for any new reports before turning in and I saw that you had another SWAT Team report and I had to read it. Many times I have sat here reading your reports and thought to myself "What more can Wingnut do in the surf?". Well, what I've read is a report that gives me great appreciation for the words Friendship and comeraderie.
We have had a few opportunities to talk about that subject and you have told me more than once that you choose your friends wisely. Well sir you are a very wise man and you have chosen some of the best and most dedicated friends one man can have. Arthur, I commend you and all of those whom you call a friend.
Keep the reports coming guys!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Arthur,
It was great seeing you again, as it has been too long since I have been able to meet up with you guys. And I am so happy to have been able to help you out. You have done so much for me and been such a great friend. Just happy I can do something for you. Hope you had a wonderful Mothers Day and let me know when you fish again. Definitely looking forward to the next time you come up here, and I still need to drive down and fish your turf one of these days.

Mike,
It was great seeing you again and fishing with you again. Had a wonderful time talking with you and just generally hanging out. Im still just as amazed as you are that you didn't stick that fish. You worked those boilers for so long I had basically given up. Anyways, looking forward to fishing with you again. Hopefully it is soon.

Mikey,
Great seeing you again. Thanks for all the help with the couple of reels I had issues with and for acting as our guide yesterday. Looking forward to fishing with you again. We definitely need to get into one of those epic perch bites some time and I would love to learn some of the other areas to fish in our neck of the woods.

Bill,
It was great fishing with you again. We definitely need to hit it again soon. Ill give you a call in the next couple of days.

That's one hell of a Report. One hell of a home cooked meal. One hell of a lady. One hell of a good time.

and lastly... ONE HELL OF A BROTHERHOOD

Like always, a great report. It never fails at how detailed your reports are Arthur. It makes me feel as if I was there right next to you guys.

Funny how things work, I've never met Bill, Roy or Mikey but I already have a great deal of respect towards them. The fact that they knew the situation and decided to willingly give up a legal flattie if they caught one, shows they are some good people. I wouldve done the same thing...awesome job fellas. Hope to hit the sand with you guys one day. :Thumbs Up:

Mike, nice BSP there bud, I predicted a 17" from one of you guys, but I'll take those 13" going around anyday.

Arthur, I can hear your expression in my head when you first saw that Halibut. I wish I would've been there, I would've had a laugh myself. :Envious:

Great things happen to the people that deserve it brotha, and we all know you definitely deserve it. You do so much for others, it was time something was given back. I personally would like to thank you on my part and on S.W.A.T's part for everything you have done for us and for the brotherhood you have created. It's something that I will be extremely happy to be part of for years to come. Like you said, sometimes its not about the fish....its about the company. I couldn't agree more. Thanks for everything my friend.

Roy, welcome to the team bud. See you soon.

Was there ever a doubt Art? One way or another, the big guy upstairs was going to bless you with a halibut for mom. I'm not one of the SWAT guys but I would have given you a hali too if I caught one. Cool new rods, great report, nice job Roy coming thru for the commander. :Thumbs Up:

Arthur,
You're a very generous guy (more so than many will know), and like you've said time and time again, karma is there! It was meant to be that you'd get your mom a halibut for Mother's Day, and I, unlike others, have faith that it was in part due to your past good deeds. Really glad to hear Mom got her fish and that you had another great day on the sand.

Mike,
Glad to see you fishing out there buddy! Hadn't seen a bones report in a while and was wondering what had happened. I see the perch are still treating you well, but I think it may be time to check out some of our local beaches to see how the flat kind is doing. I don't know if you remember last year's trip, but I'm itching for some redemption at klocked's spot. Let's figure something out.

Mikey,
I know that I could learn a lot from fishing with you some more, and hope to have the chance to in the near future. You are definitely a surf Yoda, and I think you may have a spot list longer than Arthur's! Hope to see you in some more southerly waters soon, but I'll definitely be back up in your territory in the near future.

q3fishboy,
Welcome to SWAT! Haven't had the chance to meet or fish with you man, but it'll be good to do so in the future.

WWO,
Good to see you had a fun time fishing with the team, and hope to share the sand with you soon.

Looking forward to being able to fish again once I'm done with school! Let's hit the sand soon SWAT,

Marc

Fantastic report Arthur!! The conditions looked kinda rough out there but as always, the SWAT crew's persistence made it pay off! Congrats Roy on becoming a member of SWAT and that was a nice sized flattie you got there! Like Arthur said, I think any of the SWAT crew would of hooked and handed a legal flatty to anyone in need:LOL::Cool:

I wish I could of made it up there with you guys but my parents have watched my son for the last 3 Saturdays in a row I think, so they deserved a break. Saturday, I turned things around and went out and bought some flowers for their yard and planted them. Points!!

I'm looking forward to fishing with the crew again reel soon!

Yup, it only cost me $19.00 per pound. Had to do it, as expected, my mom got a phone call from your mom raving about the halibut that her son brought home for Mother's day. :Rolls Eyes:
It's getting expensive keeping up with Wingnut. lol jk.
Too cool that the brotherhood got ya covered. Way to go Roy, I think i fished with you once a little while back didn't I Roy? Welcome to SWAT, you will fit right in.

Arthur, the faith that you so highly speak of has been good to you all your life. You are a shinning example of the Almighty's reward to his faithful. Most people need a match, a candle or a torch to see when they walk through the darkness of this world we live in. You don't need these things because you, yourself are the light. Don't ever change buddy, you have influenced and touched more people on this earth than you'll ever know.

Wow !! Awesome report Arthur !! It was like I was right there with you guys. The look on your face when you saw the halibut is priceless !!! Great job all you guys !! Thanks for sharing your fishing adventure !!!

Forgot to say " Those BSP are so HUGE !!!! Ghetto Dad is going to be Drooling over the pics. big time !!! I was too . LOL
The look on my face was both shock & surprised. I was caught completely off guard, and that's hard to do. The Perch were Pigs... now that GD is throwing the LC, he will get his share of Pigs too.

Steve http://planetsmilies.net/person-smiley-1122.gif
Even though I really wanted to fish with you Steve, you made the right call. I hope the transition goes smoothly for the family. Looking forward to your return on the water.

That was just an awesome report Arthur!
It brought a smile to my face just reading it and I know the guys were just as happy for you as well!
It's good to put some faces to some names.
Bill looks like a veteran out there and I look forward to fishing with him.
Roy, very cool of you to do that for Arthur. We all know he goes to great lenghts to make everyone happy and it's nice to do it for him when given the chance.
Mikey, Nice cup holder you got there in your waders. Was that hot chocolate?
That shovel nose and leo were some nice looking sharks. i look forward to the day I can make it up there to fish with you.
Mike, looks like good times were had by all. I'm envious of those big fat perches you guys were reeling in.
Again, I had a great time reading this post.

Remember Arthur, people can get to Hell the nice way as well as the dirty way...
Too bad you couldn't join us Robert, but you will make your way up here at your own pace. The bite in your neck of the woods is worth staying close to home for. :Secret: Let's hit the sand before work duties call us both away.

Yeah, they got me good...
Thanks again for the guided surf session Mikey. The new spot has great potential as you & Perchin' Dave has proven in the past week or so. :Big Grin:

Hi WingNut,

Killer report ..... thank you for the great effort !!

Happy Mom !!

JapanRon
Thanks Ron, happy Mom indeed. :Big Grin:

Thanks for giving me 110% Mike, I know that you were trying hard to get it done for me.
We certainly have a great group of guys and our Team is growing fast. :Big Grin:
Can't wait to check that new spot with you buddy. If they're there, they're in trouble.

Bill, you are a great addition to S.W.A.T. You have the drive and the mental fortitude needed for success in this sport. Thanks again for offering you help & support to the cause. Haopy Hali hunting my friend. :Big Grin:

Thanks Terry, you and I think alike when it comes to friendship. We also have that rare bond that comes from sharing a tear for a friend. Can't wait for our solo surf session...

Fantastic report! You have some good vibes Wingnut, your mom did a good job bro!
Keep up the good work out there in the surf. Truly inspirational.

Ryan
She did alright...
Somebody inspired me a while ago to start surf fishing, just trying to pass it on.

Arthur,
It was great seeing you again, as it has been too long since I have been able to meet up with you guys.

Roy, you finally caught a Halibut fishing with me! How perfect is that Halibut happens to be a legal too. :Big Grin: Thank you for coming through in a clutch for me as we were in the bottom of the ninth inning. Welcome to S.W.A.T. and hope to fish with you again soon.

Utterly fantastic post, my favorite wingnut report. :Big Grin:
Beside the President himself, you have the best support team, period. He calls them his staff, you call them your friends.
Did you tell your mom that you caught it? hehe
I have the best group of guys behind me Vince... and I stand behind them. That's what the Brotherhood is all about.
Nope, I told my Mom the entire story exactly like it happened. We had a nice laugh at the dinner table over it. :Big Grin:

Thanks Frank, sure wish that you could have come up with us. I hope you cleared your plate enough so you can join us out there for a session or two. My time will be very limited coming up here very soon.
As for whatever I've done for anybody, it's my way of saying thank you for supporting me and all I've ever ask is to "Pay it forward."

That was a great story. Way to go Roy sounds like you guys had some rough conditions to work with but you managed to pull a (hal)rabbit from your hat. Well done my friend.

JerryG
Brother Jerry, they pulled a FAT Rabbit out of the hat for me. :Envious:
Been too long since we've fish together my friend, let make it happen soon!

Way to step it up guys and help out the Team Capt'n.

Arthur, how do you like the Duckett rods? How do they compare to the E21 you fished last season.
Boyd Duckett used to design the Carrot Stix for E21. He left them and started his own rod company. It's no surprised that these rods feels and behaved just like the Carrot Stix. I couldn't tell the difference between my 7' 10" Carrot Stix Gold and the new BD 7' 11" Crankin' Stick. The micro guides takes a little getting used to, but overall, they are verry nice. I bought 4 casting and 2 spinning rods. :Big Grin:

I was checking out the conditions last night and everything was looking good for today. Actually, it was looking VERY good. Really wanted to hit the surf, but had a 9:00am meeting that I cannot miss. Tossed the idea around and kept going back & forth with it all evening. Finally, around 11:00pm, I said, what the heck... I'm going! Just have to cut it to a short 2-hour session so I can make it to the meeting. Can't be late, my "Boss" is kind of a jerk. lol

Got to the drop zone at 6:00am. S.W.A.T. code name "Pea Soup." :Secret:
Conditions were absolutely ideal. Flat 1ft swells rolling gently onto the beach. Gin clear water with very little salad. Water feels warm, probably around the low 60's. Mild off-shore wind at my back. Fishing the back end of the high tide. The only thing missing was the presence of some baitfish, didn't see any at all.

Within a few seconds of wading in, I immediately spook a short Hali in thigh deep water... that's a good sign, I thought to myself. Made a few casts and nailed a 16" short Hali. Probably that same one I just spooked, they have short memories. Well, that answered two questions that we all have every time we hit the surf. Are they here...? and Are they biting...? When you get two "yes" answers, that's a good thing! :Big Grin:

Fast forward...

Fish count (All released)
(4) Short Halibut
(2) Legal Halibut 23", 24"

Before I knew it, I looked at my watch and it was 8:20am. Crap! I backed out of the surf immediately and high tailed it out of the area. I'm pretty sure that things was just starting to get good. This is one of those times that I wish I had all day to fish. This morning had all the makings for an epic day.
Got to my car, changed into my work clothes and hit the freeway... just in time for rush hour traffic.

I was half an hour late to the meeting, lucky for me, the "Boss" was late too.

Conditions looking great for the rest of the week, go out there and get them ladies & gentlemen!

I decided to throw a different lure this morning. I have a small collection of these lures and rarely throw them. Maybe I should do so more often... what do you think? They feel a bit lighter than the LC's, have a similar action and they are more expensive. :EyePop:
A surf fishing veteran once told me that the Ito Vision 110 Akahara Iwashi pattern was the "Grand Daddy" of all surf lures. Who knows...?
But, whatever it is that you're throwing, throw it with confidence and success will come.

Yeah Buddy!

Oh man, it looks super flat! 6 hali's in 2 hours? 2 of them being legals? some people dont even fish that in a whole day! Looks like were going to have to pay a visit to "pea soup" and completely devastate the area. :Envious:

That's one funky looking hardbait, but it manages to produce quite nicely. They're more expensive than LC's!? :EyePop: I never thought I'd see the day any hardbait would be more expensive than a LC lol. I guess I was wrong.

Nice job out there bud...I'm locked n loaded, just let me know when. :Secret:

Well done my friend! Looks like Pea Soup is going hot for the summer!
I have one... yes just one of those ITO's, pricey little pieces of plastic..
I like the little emblem inside the eyes, reel fancy!

I hope that big girl that I saw, sticks around so one of the SWAT crew can tame her!

Damn Art, imagine the number of flatties you would have racked up if you were able to fish all day. :EyePop: What could have been. Sweet short session, can't beat that short to legal halibut ratio. :Thumbs Up:

Oh yeah, and I agree, your boss is a jerk.

The Ito's run between $20.00 and $30.00 depending on models and patterns.
I'm probably going to start throwing them a little bit more.

You know where it's at Frank, go gettem'!
The Ito is a bit exotic looking, but pretty similar to the LC in action. Like the LC, it's a very well made lure with lots of details. You certainly get what you pay for.

The coolest thing about the Ito's are those hollogram looking eyes, trippy. I think they hypnotizes the fish into biting. Also, the special bend in the trebles and the reversed barb is pretty nifty too.
Believe me buddy, I was looking for your big girl, she's still out there in the soup somewhere.

Thanks man... there are no "Masters" on the S.W.A.T. Crew, some are more experienced than others, but we are all still learning. If there were a Master, it would be Yoda Master "Exfactor" (Mikey). :Envious:

Everybody on the S.W.A.T. crew gets these PM's. We are willing to share a lot of information, but location isn't one of them.

I packed my fishing rods and lures, but at the last minutes I decide to leave them @ home and focus more on the lady on our vacation. However, kinda regretted I didn't bring my tackle when I was there, saw lots of big & nice fishes but oh well :).
