Fished with Tom (Hamachi_Kama) on Thursday. We had plans to fish west of the bridge for an evening TW sesh. Departed E.G. approximately 1530hrs and headed south on I5. Tom looks at me and said “will you be mad at me if we fish on the Sac instead” I said NOPE. I have no other choice. Sac it is, splashed the boat at Hogsback and hit the usual spots. 10 cast each on the first spot and we were off to #9. We call it #9 because we have not pulled anything over 9pounder from there. We get to the spot but, the conditions didn’t look promising at all. Tom pulled a nice fish on a WaxWing the last time we fished it. Tom kept getting short strikes, he connected a few times and both times they came unbuttoned.

I started throwing quite baits first, slowed rolled Trophy Baits. I also experienced the short strikes. Picked up a rod with a pointer 128. First cast BAM fish on. WRONG species. No stripes. A toad splittail. We got into a wide open snag fest on split tails. They were so thick in that spot. The ripbaits are getting hung up on their dorsal fins. Switched over to LV’s with the same results. We both agreed that if the split tails are in there thick. The big Trophies are elsewhere. Tom made a call to Pat and see how he did on his sesh. I heard Pat telling Tom that he had a 25 and a 10 on TW. Of course, the finger pointing starts.

Tom- See, I knew we should have stuck with the original plan.
Me- You wanted to fish the Sac
Tom- NO, I didn’t
Me- Whatevers, Lets find our own fish.
Tom- OK

I can count how many times that the boat has been Striperless on an outing. Thursday was one of those.

Friday- The crew consisted of Tom, Hotdog (James) and I. We did stick to the original plan and launched at Lauritzens. Boat was in the water by 0600hrs. We ran into RJ with Northwind Outfitters. Said they had 200 fish days a few weeks ago out there. Schoolie size. After BSing for a few minutes we go our separate ways. RJ came out of the Harbor and gunned directly to our first spot. Well, there goes that idea. We headed west to the usual spots. Cast here, cast there, and cast all over for ZERO fish. Next stop, THE MAZE. Wind was blowing and gusting @ approximately 30mph. The current is going the other way. Having a highly confident, highly skilled captain. When he says this is frustrating “DO NOT, I REPEAT. DO NOT get on his way. We came around the corner to find shelter from the wind. It didn’t last long. We gave it hell though. Tom hooks up first. Of course, DUH. He always gets first fish. Nice decent keeper bout 20-22incher on a WaxWing. Not to be outdone, I grabbed my WaxWing rod and I also connected. Two WaxWing fish in the boat. Pics and Released.

We stayed in and out of the maze for awhile longer due to the wind. Once it laid down a bit we trekked East of the bridge to the WaxWing Spot. I worked it hard and finally gave it a rest. Grabbed the pointer rod which by the way was complements of Tom. (thanks for the new Rod Tom) He broke his Black and Yella Skeet Reese rod a few months ago and didn’t have plans to exchange it for a new one. So he said to take it. Took it over to FW and handed it over to Craig, in 3 pieces and he laughed. He said pick out the replacement you want. OK.

Already had a pointer tied on. Started fan casting and working that pointer all crazy like. I made a few cast downwind and paused the pointer a bit longer that usual and burn it again. The minute I slowed it down and giving it the 5-10 seconds pause. That thing was hammered and caught me off guard. The fish ran broadside and was taking line. Finally got a glance of the whole fish and I was like WOW. I didn’t want to be over confident and call it a double digit before it was in the net. The fish took me around the boat and ran straight for the Trolling motor. He got me hung up for a few and had to react quick and got all surgical with maneuvering the rod around the trolling motor shaft. She finally came to rest inside the net and when Tom had it on there and I looked. I was like WHOA. There she is. Finally broke the 11lbs PB Delta (plug) Striper after 3 years.

The christening of the new plug rod (thanks Tom, for my new rod) was in sesh.

After an official weigh in and pics, she was properly revived and released. Adrenaline was still rushing in and being overly stoked of breaking a PB fish. I couldn’t get back into position on my spot of the boat. We gave it a few more drifts over the spot and James caught 2 fish on a WaxWing that were almost the same size as his plug. The wind made it really really difficult for us. We continued heading East a bit further and made a few stops at Little Franks. Very clean water, probably 4-5’ visibility. Spots that appeared very promising didn’t produce.

I was telling Tom that we have not hooked a fish on a swimbait lately and here I am with a swimbait rod in hand, and what do you know. BAM, swimbait fish…

Started making our way back West and the trolling motor cuts out completely and blows the breaker. Captain said,” it’s a sign”. He has been complaining about the trolling motor the last few outings. We all agreed to call it a day and not find a reason to blow a motor and costly replacement. What a gnarly ride back to the ramp. We took on a good splash over the bow and made it back safe to the ramp. RJ, also came in at the same time. Said that they had over 30 fish but most were a handful of shakers and biggest was 3lbs.

Hotdog- I had a great time fishing with you and hope to fish the Feather with you in the near future.

Tom- thank you for creating another memory on the boat.

We had plans to get back on the Dirty D today but, after the incident on the trolling motor we opted out. Most likely a good call since this wind just progressively worse. Sooo, we inflated out Cadillac's of a Float Tubes and hit pond by my house. We only gave it a good hour though, just needed to feed the addiction.

I was trying to get into the bigger pond without getting off my Float Tube.

Very nice report, congrats on the nice catch.
The farthest North I've traveled for Stripers is Lake San Antonio. One of these days I'll venture all the way to the Delta and take a shot.
Keep up the good work!
