Fishing Saturday morning, May 07, 11, on the Sport Boat “Tradition” out of Redondo Beach. Met Jackpot Jimmy at 5:30 am in Redondo, who invited me to join him on his Dad’s (Phil) ¾ day boat for the day.

All the passengers boarded the boat just before 6am, and shortly after we left the dock. Picked up both Sardines and Anchovies from the bait barge and headed out the harbor around 6:30am.

The plan for the day was to seek out and destroy the newly arrived Barracuda found on Friday by the half-day boat Redondo Special. It took some patience and a bunch of other Sport Boats working together up and down the coast of Redondo, Hermosa Beach and Marina Del Rey. After almost two hours the Captain announced that Barracuda had finally made an appearance, and just ahead the New Del Mar was in full bendo mode!

We all drooled as shouts and hollers of fresh one came from the New Del Mar, a bunch of happy campers for sure? The Captain hollered there’s a huge school on the port side, throw bait, and go get em guys!

We had a light passenger load of only 16 anglers, out of 26 reservations, those 10 no shows are going to regret their decision when they read the counts! It was instant hookup for most of us throwing Iron. A few fish were hooked up on bait in the stern. 2nd and 3rd casts often resulted in hook ups, then the fish sunk out. I put two fish on in this first flurry.

My biggest Barracuda, 8.5 pounds.

The Captain played run and gun for hours, with non-stop action as soon as the fish were found. The Irons flew and the hook ups continued. These fish were all big, no shorts among them, averaging well over five pounds, up to the biggest, which was 9.3 pounds shown below:

The bummer was, he didn’t enter the Jackpot! However Bill did and he shows off his two big’ns including the Jackpot fish weighing 8.9 pounds.

At a little after noon the Barracuda sunk out for good and we made a move to the outer banks for some deep water Rockfish. It was a slow pick, with lots of Bocaccio, a few Reds, some Barber Poles, Chuckle Heads, Bank Perch and lots of Nursery fish.

I caught several Bocaccio with this one held up compared to one of my ten (limits) of Barracuda caught.

We ended the day at 3:30 pm with over a hundred Barracuda, and three or four around on the Rockfish.

No wind today, finally, with mostly overcast skies and little peeks from Father Sun.

Thanks Jimmy, fun to spend a day fishing with you on the Tradition! Nice to meet you Phil and Kudos to all the crew for a fine job, and to the cook Alex for some delicious Breakfast Burritos, and King Cong sized double cheeseburgers, yum yum, burp!
Hook up! Cory

Good news about the Big Slime Sticks out front. I think this is the first report I've seen from you N of PV ?
Which end of SMB are those Cuda at.
Hey Cory, what do think of Boccacio ? OK to eat or a trash fish.
My brother called them trash fish and greasy when I told him about the ones we caught on friday.
Never eaten them myself.

DR I've had boccacio before but it was fresh and it actually tasted pretty good. I guess the key is to bleed them and make sure they are kept nice and wet in your gunny sack.

Other than a little more odor and penchant for having worms in the meat, if you deep fry them, can't tell them from any other Rockfish. I'm going to coat them in a Louisiana style fish fry mix and pan fry them for fish tacos! I gave all my Cuda away, if you don't bleed them and put them on ice, they don't suit my taste buds! When handled with care Cuda cooked fajitas style, onion and bell pepper is my favorite way to prepare them. They also taste good in a curry sauce!

I second that on the Boccacio. They are real good. The key, to me anyway, was to get the skin off of them, that's what tends to smell. We fried some up (which had been frozen after one of my trips on the tradition) and it was excellent.

Those Cuda are not Homegaurd. They just traveled into SMB are were not raised there.
The small Cuda that live in the harbors are nasty. I saw a short one caught at Pier J the other day and they are always in San Pedro under the docks.

I was reading about guys filling ice chest's at The Salton Sea with Tilapia.
They were saying how great the bite is now.
OMG, That place is fed by the most polluted river in the USA.

Nice job getting your limit Cory.
I personally don't mind eating a cuda once in a while, b ut would never try to eat 10 of them.
Thanks for the report and pics,
Robert
