Mom want a Halibut for Mother's Day dinner... she has spoken. Somewhere, somehow... today, there will be at least one Halibut as dead as OBL. http://www.horrordvds.com/vb3forum/images/smilies/evil.gif
Got in late last night and decided to go on a solo mission at greylight this morning. Couldn't really sleep so I left the pad early and took a short drive to a local spot and got there in complete darkness. Walked down to the beach and sat there on the sand for about 20 minutes until the greylight gave me just enough light to wade and cast safely. This is my favorite time to fish the surf... the transition period from darkness to dawn. http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/10001/smile.gif

Three or four casts into the session and the LC gets bumped. An overgrown Smelt puts Mr. Skunk on the shelf for the day.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/001-1.jpg
The very next cast, thump! Oh yeah, the familar headshakes... but definitely not a legal, made quick work of this one and get back to business. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/04.gif
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/002-1.jpg
A few more casts and bam, fish on again! Feels like a decent fish, definitely a Flat One... Could it be...? Am I lucky enough to secure the package in just a few minutes into the mission...?
The Hali slid up on the beach... looks pretty close to legal and I put a tape to it.
Arggggh... 22" on the dot, too close to keep. Back into the suds it goes... this is a VERY good sign I thought to myself. Three fish in a matter of minutes, they are here and they're active! :Big Grin:

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/008-1.jpg
No more than two minutes after I released the 22 incher, the LC gets stopped again, they are stacked up here! :EyePop:
Feels like another nice fish...
22 1/2" - 23" Close enough... bag & tag baby!
Mission accomplished in about 15 minutes! http://www.smiley-faces.org/smiley-faces/smiley-face-groupwave.gif

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/010-1.jpg
Before I know it, I look up and dawn's early light was upon me and I was greeted with a chunky Calico.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/013-1.jpg
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/019-1.jpg
The bite held steady as I continue to pick up short Flatties as I worked the stretch of beach.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/022-1.jpg
Then all of the sudden, as I was walking down to the next stretch of beach carrying the dead Hali, somebody yells, "Hey, POACHER!!!" http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/a11.gif Startled, I turn around to see John (Klocked) coming down the trail to the beach with the biggest smile on his face. I showed him the Flattie and told him about the hot bite at greylight.
Then we hit the surf in tandem in search of another casualty of the flat kind.
Another short Flattie and Calico.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/025-1.jpg
Then I hang another 22" Hali, another borderline legal. Lucky for this one, I didn't want to deal with the "shrinkage" issue.

John gets hooked up to a nice fish. Major bendo on his rod, taking drag and fighting good. John gets it in close and we get a glimpse of the fish. A sure legal Flattie, I would guess around 24-25". All of the sudden the LC comes flying back at him... damn, I hate it when that happens! http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/tears/t2315.gif John just shakes his head and keeps on casting. Way to go John, in the business of fishing, it's good to have short memories... lol
Next, something hilarious happened, you just have to be there to see it. As John was working the surf no more than 20 yards to the left of me in waist deep water, I watched him almost jumped clear out of the water... and yelled, "Ohhhhh @#$&!" and a few other colorful metaphors. For a moment, I started to turn around to run out of the surf thinking that he saw a Shark or something. He calms down and tells me that he just spooked a huge Halibut, looks like at least a 30 incher! We both started casting like madmen and blanketed the entire area for one little pancake. http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/rtfm/t2405.gif
But, the look on John's face when he saw that barn door was absolutely priceless! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing001.gif
Well, it was now around 10:30am and I'm still dragging around this dead Hali since greylight and it was starting to look like a slab of charcoal. So I told John that i'm going to cut out and take this fish home for an appointment with the fillet knife. John says that he's happy that my mission is done, but his is not, so he's going to hop over to the next area and see if he can get a legal too. Guess what...? As I was pulling into my driveway, I get a picture text from John at the other spot with a 23.5" Flattie on the sand. Simply awesome... enjoy your halibut dinner buddy! http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/rulez/t2009.gif

Now, that was a fun and productive morning! :Big Grin: Anytime you set out to do something in the surf and accomplish your goal... it feels great! John, pleasant surprise to see out there my friend, I'm glad that you intercepted my S.W.A.T. transmission and tracked me down. Congrats on achieving your goal today also, enjoy. I'm on another mission tomorrow, now it seems that the GF wants a Halibut too... :Rolls Eyes:
Have a terrific Mother's Day weekend everybody. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/14.gif
