Declassified Intel:
S.W.A.T. Central Command Directive: Secure legal Halibut for Mother's Day dinner.
Mission Status: Multiple packages secured.

Date: Friday, May 6th, 2011
Time: 5:30am - 11:00am
Mission Data: Cool, overcast at greylight giving way to partial late morning sunshine. Very little wind, Negative low with slow rising incoming tide. Very little water movement. Flat 1-2 ft swells, water clarity good, very little salad, very little baitfish, water temp. noticeably warmer.
Arsenal: Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110SP (Stock MS Anchovie pattern)

Mom want a Halibut for Mother's Day dinner... she has spoken. Somewhere, somehow... today, there will be at least one Halibut as dead as OBL. http://www.horrordvds.com/vb3forum/images/smilies/evil.gif

Got in late last night and decided to go on a solo mission at greylight this morning. Couldn't really sleep so I left the pad early and took a short drive to a local spot and got there in complete darkness. Walked down to the beach and sat there on the sand for about 20 minutes until the greylight gave me just enough light to wade and cast safely. This is my favorite time to fish the surf... the transition period from darkness to dawn. http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/10001/smile.gif
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/012-1.jpg

Three or four casts into the session and the LC gets bumped. An overgrown Smelt puts Mr. Skunk on the shelf for the day.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/001-1.jpg

The very next cast, thump! Oh yeah, the familar headshakes... but definitely not a legal, made quick work of this one and get back to business. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/04.gif
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/002-1.jpg

A few more casts and bam, fish on again! Feels like a decent fish, definitely a Flat One... Could it be...? Am I lucky enough to secure the package in just a few minutes into the mission...?
The Hali slid up on the beach... looks pretty close to legal and I put a tape to it.
Arggggh... 22" on the dot, too close to keep. Back into the suds it goes... this is a VERY good sign I thought to myself. Three fish in a matter of minutes, they are here and they're active! :Big Grin:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/003-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/008-1.jpg

No more than two minutes after I released the 22 incher, the LC gets stopped again, they are stacked up here! :EyePop:
Feels like another nice fish...
22 1/2" - 23" Close enough... bag & tag baby!
Mission accomplished in about 15 minutes! http://www.smiley-faces.org/smiley-faces/smiley-face-groupwave.gif

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/010-1.jpg

Before I know it, I look up and dawn's early light was upon me and I was greeted with a chunky Calico.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/013-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/019-1.jpg

The bite held steady as I continue to pick up short Flatties as I worked the stretch of beach.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/021-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/017-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/022-1.jpg

Then all of the sudden, as I was walking down to the next stretch of beach carrying the dead Hali, somebody yells, "Hey, POACHER!!!" http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/a11.gif Startled, I turn around to see John (Klocked) coming down the trail to the beach with the biggest smile on his face. I showed him the Flattie and told him about the hot bite at greylight.
Then we hit the surf in tandem in search of another casualty of the flat kind.

Another short Flattie and Calico.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/020-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/025-1.jpg

Then I hang another 22" Hali, another borderline legal. Lucky for this one, I didn't want to deal with the "shrinkage" issue.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/014-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/015-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/016-1.jpg

John gets hooked up to a nice fish. Major bendo on his rod, taking drag and fighting good. John gets it in close and we get a glimpse of the fish. A sure legal Flattie, I would guess around 24-25". All of the sudden the LC comes flying back at him... damn, I hate it when that happens! http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/tears/t2315.gif John just shakes his head and keeps on casting. Way to go John, in the business of fishing, it's good to have short memories... lol

Next, something hilarious happened, you just have to be there to see it. As John was working the surf no more than 20 yards to the left of me in waist deep water, I watched him almost jumped clear out of the water... and yelled, "Ohhhhh @#$&!" and a few other colorful metaphors. For a moment, I started to turn around to run out of the surf thinking that he saw a Shark or something. He calms down and tells me that he just spooked a huge Halibut, looks like at least a 30 incher! We both started casting like madmen and blanketed the entire area for one little pancake. http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/rtfm/t2405.gif
But, the look on John's face when he saw that barn door was absolutely priceless! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing001.gif

Well, it was now around 10:30am and I'm still dragging around this dead Hali since greylight and it was starting to look like a slab of charcoal. So I told John that i'm going to cut out and take this fish home for an appointment with the fillet knife. John says that he's happy that my mission is done, but his is not, so he's going to hop over to the next area and see if he can get a legal too. Guess what...? As I was pulling into my driveway, I get a picture text from John at the other spot with a 23.5" Flattie on the sand. Simply awesome... enjoy your halibut dinner buddy! http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/rulez/t2009.gif
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/imagejpeg_2.jpg

Nice fish John! :Envious:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/P5060105.jpg

Now, that was a fun and productive morning! :Big Grin: Anytime you set out to do something in the surf and accomplish your goal... it feels great! John, pleasant surprise to see out there my friend, I'm glad that you intercepted my S.W.A.T. transmission and tracked me down. Congrats on achieving your goal today also, enjoy. I'm on another mission tomorrow, now it seems that the GF wants a Halibut too... :Rolls Eyes:

Have a terrific Mother's Day weekend everybody. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/14.gif

I'm glad you got that legal for your mom, gotta keep the moms happy too!.

WOOHOO!!!! FINALLY!!! The halibut have moved into that spot!!!

Last year that place was pretty slow with a few exceptions, so it is great to see that there are some solid fish in there in volume Arthur. It's great that you succeeded in your mission this week, and I know Mother's Day will be special with that fresh hali. Those women in your life can be really demanding about when they want a halibut, but I wouldn't know anything about that...

That 30in getting spooked must have been a site to see John, and I know you'll be back there trying to get her to commit. Glad to see you got your legal too!

Come next week, I am going to be hitting that spot hard. I want that 30in+

Congrats guys,

Marc

I love this thread for two reasons:

1) I've fished the surf 10 times and only caught one perch, on a fly, and I have no idea how to flyfish. (The other times I tried Carolina rigged plastic grubs to no avail). I love the ocean. My idea of heaven is spending a day catching fish in the surf. Since I seem TOTALLY unable to do so, I live through these threads. Love it.

2) I laughed, out loud, at the headline. Subtle, but utterly awesome.

John & Arthur,

I had no doubt that you 2 would each secure a special gift for your Mothers Day Meal!

I just don't ever remember fish as part of the recipe in "PEA SOUP"!

The little lady decided to surprise me with a home cook meal... MY MOM'S HALIBUT!
I can't even get upset at her... her thoughts were in the right place.
So I guess it's back to the battlefield tomorrow or the fish market.

Did a lot of reading and research and put countless hours in the surf. I was also lucky enough to have a few surf fishing veterans helping me out and showing me the ropes. If you really enjoy doing something, you usually will do it well. :Big Grin: If you have any questions regarding surf fishing, shoot me a PM.
I was afraid that somebody might get offended at the report title... but then I thought, who cares!

FANTASTICAL...:Big Grin:
Awesome job getting all the halis Arthur but, you need to save some for us guys when we make the trek North...

John,
Congrats on the legal hali also.
I would have been there if I didn't have to work...
Oh well, there is always the rest of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter to get more fish...

Thanks for the report and pictures,
Robert
<><

p.s. that one picture of John by the flowers reminded me of that skunk from the Bambi movie..:Big Smile:
Robert, you are a fishing machine! If there's one person that I might have trouble keeping up with, it's you! Only a month left until I go M.I.A. again, lets make it count!

John & Arthur,

I had no doubt that you 2 would each secure a special gift for your Mothers Day Meal!

I just don't ever remember fish as part of the recipe in "PEA SOUP"!

You are the luckiest guy i know Art. :Envious:
I heard that she can cook a mean bowl of pho too. :Secret:
Somehow, i don't think you have anything to worry about. Either you will come through with flying colors tomorrow, or the SWAT crew will have your back.
It's not luck Binh. :Big Smile:
Yes, she can cook Pho too... :Envious:
Good seeing you at the fight party bro.

Wow, great report.

Entertaining, informative and photos too! Great job! With the flatties up so shallow, they might be chasing grunion with grunion season happening? And that dinner looks GOOD!

You have some energy Arthur. Nice report.
Grunion run is the Top Intel Secret :Secret:

Got in late.
Couldn't sleep.
At the beach in the dark.
Fished half day.
Wrote a report.
Went to the gym.
DR
Beats laying on the couch all day long... :Envious:
At my age, I'm afraid to slow down, I may not be able to speed back up again.

Too close to the damn brush, there's rattlesnakes in there X(
Seen them before in that area too. that's why we take it extra slow on the trails and always have our eyes and ears open.

Awesome results Arthur, wtg out there gents...keep the fish porn comin!

TD
Thanks Aaron, where have you been bro? Hope all is well...

nice! , and nice fish too :)
:Big Grin:

Wingnut , Your post are the best of the best , ha Getting to your spot at greylight reminds me of lobster diving from the beach as I would get ready in total darkness and be at surfside [ solo ] and thru the surf at Greylight , what total being with one [ posiedin ] was never a doubt . // db
Love fishing the greylight, lots of things are stirring in the water just before the sun comes up.

Arthur, you are living the life my friend. A perfect example of why "good" things happens to "good" people. You've got it all and you deserve all of it.
Another fabulous report. Too funny that Lynn cooked up your mom's halibut, but it sure looks delicious! I have no doubt that you will get another one for your mom today and that's why I didn't make any bets with you.

Give me a call, we need to get the girls together for dinner. Where do you want to go, Chaya? Mr. Chow? I know you said that dinner is on you, but no, it's my turn buddy.
Let's set it up! Please wish your mom a happy mother's day from me and Lauren and see you soon. :Big Grin:
Glad you had a nice vacation Phuong, welcome back. :Big Grin:
I'll be in town for the next couple of weeks, Chaya sounds good. I'm craving their White Sea Bass plate. :Envious:

Arthur, glad to see you and John hooking it up! Need to be out there with you guys, just having fun catching the large mouth bass at castaic lake..
Thnaks for the report
Saltman..
Ramiro, forget those Green Bass, the Striped ones tastes better. :Envious:
Need to get you back out there with us again bro.

That is so awsome great job.that hali meat is so good, those fillets dont look half bad....
It was a feast Tony, tastes even better when you know that you caught it yourself. :Big Grin:

Another outstanding SWAT report.. Well done my friends. You guys really put a hurt on them yesterday. SWAT catches more high profile suspects before 9am than most Anglers catch fishing all day. I wish I could have made it out to fish SB with you guys today.. I’m long over due for some beach passes. I’m looking forward to fishing with the Team soon. Going to try to sneak out early tomorrow morning to hit the beach for few hours..

JerryG
Hope you did well brother Jerry. :Big Grin: yeah, it's been too long since we walked the same beach together buddy. let me know if you're free this weekend, conditions looks great!

Another great report from S.W.A.T. Team 6 , the elite of the elite !
Looks like the tandem attack worked and the enemy was caught off guard !!

Great report guys and fun read ...
Thanks man, we had a blast, and the session the next day was even better. :Big Grin:
