Fishing Saturday morning, April 30, 11, on Lal’s 18’ boat, the “Rubber Ducky”. We launched out of Davies in Long Beach at 5:15 am, our beginning destination being Newport Reef. The seas were calm, and our ride down to the Reef was a pleasant one.

Arriving at Newport Reef, Lal found some good marks, and we started our drift. The wind was out of the North East at around five knots, and there was a decent current leading up to the high tide at 8:39 AM. It was a good pick on the Sand Bass and an occasional Calico Bass for several hours. The bite died at around 8am, having caught and released around 18 Sand Bass to three pounds and a couple of Calico Bass to two pounds.

Lal ran over to the Pipe hoping for a repeat performance, no such luck, hardly anything on the meter, and only two Sand Bass caught in 30 minutes. At 8:30 AM the wind began to howl, within five minutes it went from five knots to twenty knots, then it got up to thirty knots, and backed off to twelve knots. It was time to head north and avoid a beating. During our 30 minute run, the wind charged through and backed off; allowing us a decent ride back to a few other areas to fish some 8 miles north.

Conditions went from an extremely fast drift and huge scope out to fishable! We stopped in a number of areas on our way back to the harbor, catching and releasing two more Calico Bass and eight more Sand Bass.

At shortly before 11AM, we yelled uncle, as the winds were unpredictable? The additional ride uphill for six miles produced some spray, yet remained within a tolerable range, and actually died down to fewer than ten knots as we reached the harbor.

Knowing that the winds were going to rule the day, we were quite pleased with the good Bass’n. We ended the day with 26 Sand Bass and 4 Calico Bass in less than a Half-day of fishing.

Thanks Lal, sure fun to scratch that itch to get back on the water and catch a few, another special day on the Ducky!

Great job Cory, glad you got on the bass before the wind came up! It hit us late in the afternoon but we were fine for most of the day.
