So my buddies and I decided to go on the San Diego yesterday in hopes of getting into some yellows.

As we made our way down the skipper informed us that the yellows have moved north from the rockpile. We got to the Coronados and skipper wanted to look around before going down further. Five minutes of motoring around and we ran over a large school of yellows. 3 scoops of sardines were dumped over and that brought the yellows up boiling. I drop down an egg color Salas 6xJr and let it drift back to the boils. Two cranks and slam! First yellow of the year for me. The boat got 6 yellows from this stop. What a start. Solid 20lbers.

We hit school after school for the next 3hrs and I managed another 'tail on bait. Sweet fight on 20lb and Saltiga 20. Two of my buddies also hit yellows on the iron. Our group of five had 4 total. Two of our boys skunked out so their perspective of this trip is a little different. :Envious:

We ended the day with 23 yellows for our boat. A few busted off otherwise we'd have more. There were more iron fish than bait fish. Just too many people to fish bait effectively.

This was the first time I fished this boat and it was awesome! Deckhands George and Renee were on top of all tangles and managed to saved quite a few fish. Renee even free-gaffed a yellow that broke off at the boat. The captain 'Booger' really has a nose for fish. :Big Grin: We were alongside with all the other 3/4 day boats and they did not do nearly as well. Amando in the galley can really make some good grub. I'll definitely be back.

They're biting, go get 'em!

You guys were lucky Saturday, you know why?
the yellow tail are swimming fast at around 150 feet deep, towards La Jolla
And not stoping for anything, they ignore the bait
Unless you get lucky and one school decide to stop
But most schools are just too busy to stop
And ignore the heavy chumming by the boats,
In a couple of weeks they could be wide open
In the meantime,if you want a yellow,
You must take your chances, the schools are huge
20 fish is nothing, when is wide open the boats will get like 70 fish
Buy a lottery ticket quick...good job!

Were they trying make it on time for the annual Yellowtail convention? :)

20 something yellows in April is never nothing. I've been in 100+ trips and skunk trips, but my favorite kind is the early eason run-and-gun. Don't get me wrong. I love a wide open bite as much as the next guy. But it doesn't take much to get bit when they're biting the paint off the boat right? These kind of trips offers a learning opportunity on every stop. The yellows are skittish this time of year and it's a small window on every stop to hook one. My buddy that caught one on iron said he learned so much more on this trip than those wide open Summer trips he's been on before.

Tight lines! Hope they'll chew the paint off this Summer. :)

Hi jigslinger,

Nice roll of the dice !!

thanks,

Thanks NihongoRon!

We were watching the counts all week and they were pretty pathetic. Then on Friday they caught 200+ rockfish. I thought they stopped looking for yellows altogether. I called the landing and the guy there told me they caught all those rockfish in the last 2hrs. They're still looking for yellows in the morning. We took a chance and when we showed up and saw 45 people on board, we almost turned around. hahahaha

Glad we stuck it out.

Awesome job getting on the YT's.
The San Diego is my favorite boat to fish on. George, Renee, Chris (usually in the galley)
are great guys. They always go all out to help you have a great time.
I'm looking forward to heading out with them again soon.
Thanks for the great report and pics,
Robert

Wassup DR. Has Edison turn the pump back on yet?
Gotta get after those yellows, buddy. They fight just a tad harder than bonnies.
