Great to see some warm weather and water tempatures creeping up. MY Wife, one of my sons and his 6 year old daughter went out of Dana Point harbor Sat. Water temp was 61 degrees. Fished a few spots just north of the harbor. Continued North to laguna , Salt creek and Seal Rock Hit a spot that we like to fish near seal rock. Water temp was 59 degrees

Caught 1- 15 inch Sculpin, 2 - 19 and 21 inch Sheephead, and what my wife identifies as a Blue Rock Fish. 3 at 12in, 15, and 22 inch

Question about the Sculpin. It had a Very BLUE mouth and when i looked inside (carefully) i could seee its troat seemed to be blue also. I don't remember any sculpin i caught recently that were so blue. Is this a certin species of something to do with spawning season? Is the flesh also blue? Thanks in advance for the help.

Oh the water report... swells were about 3- 4 feet every 8 seconds with a very small wave maybe 1 - 2 ft on top. Smoother near laguna and a lot more choppy and larger swells near Dana Point. Sorry about no pics. Not a big fan of trying to take pictures when the bite is on. Already feels like this seaon will be better than last year. God Bless you all!!! Sorry can't forget. The EMPTY Cross is the Reason we celebrate Easter..........not the bunny.

Cabezon. They commonly have a blue or green tinge to their skin.

Yep, sounds like a Cabezon... cool looking fish. Great eating fish, but make sure you DO NOT eat the roe. :!!!: Sounds like a fun and successful trip with the family, good work! :Big Grin:

Were you on shore or on a boat?

Just wondering as all were of the rockfish variety and seems like you moved around quite a bit.

Congrats on the fish and a day with family.

I rented a kayak (first time) at Dana Point a couple of weeks ago...what a great way to wet a line--- and your pants...(puleeeze, you know what I mean) Saw a fellow yakker, (he owned his..pedals, bait tank, etc.) pull in a near keeper on live bait but in general the water was still too cool...
BTW, next time you want to ID a suspect-sculpin, just lip him with your thumb...if your fingers don't start looking like sausages....yep, cabezon.
