After a fabulous day of fishing yesterday on the Santa Barbara coastline, I decided to head back up there again today to fish with Mikey (Exfactor) and "Perch" Dave. Lieutenant Bones (Mike) accompanied me on the early morning drive and Marc (BSP) and his Dad Nick was to also meet us at the spot at greylight.

The S.W.A.T. "ODST" (Ocean Drop Shock Troopers) assembled at 6:00am and launched an all out assault that lasted for eight action packed hours. The Perch bite was absolutely off the hook. The most intense Perch session that I've ever experienced and the quality of the Perch was simply amazing. I didn't keep track of everybody elses fish count, but I had easily 30+ Barred Surf Perch including two 14" and two 15" models. I also racked up five short Halibut to 20" and a Rockfish of some kind. The numbers for the other S.W.A.T. members were similar. The biggest Perch for the day was three near 16 inchers caught by Nick, Dave and Mike. All fish were released and the big preggo females were handled with care. We only had one case of premature delivery. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/04.gif

Conditions: Clear, warm and sunny day. Moderate off-shore wind. Water temp in the mid 50's. Moderate 1-3 foot swells, water clarity good, moderate salad, no baitfish presence. Fishing the incoming high tide in the morning and leaving at the drop out at 2:00pm.

Artificial munition deployed: Various sizes LC's, 3" Big Hammer grubs and swim baits, Krocodiles.

Mikey & Dave, thanks again for inviting us back up to fish with you guys. We had a fantastic time!
I had two phenomenal days of fishing... more than make up for my recent absence in the surf. Good times! http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/rulez/t2009.gif
Mikey, I'll be in town for Easter weekend... what's the plan Surf Yoda?!? http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/03.gif

Marc & Nick, now how's that for your first time fishing the Santa Barbara coast? You guys are spoiled right off the bat and it will be hard to keep up the expectations whenever you decide to head up that way again. Nick, congrats on your PB Barred Surf Perch. You caught your PB Perch in the greylight and beat it again in the afternoon... awesome! I tried so hard to get that 16 incher and came so close... but there's always a next time.
Always a pleasure to share the sand with two classy individuals.
Marc, I heard that some Millionaire made you an indecent proposal! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing001.gif

Lieutenant Bones, Mike, you didn't take off your cap all day... why??? lol
Congrats on your PB Perch today also... it's just a matter of time until we get our 16" plus.
It was nice to catch up on the long drive, we both have a lot on our plates. One day at a time brotha, one day at a time. I know that S.W.A.T. will be in good hands during my absence. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/14.gif

Take care everybody and I hope your weekend was as good, or better than mine...

Arthur (Wingnut)

Man, you guys weren't kidding around. Look at the size of those things! Monsters for sure! Great job out there guys...

Nick and Mark, you guys are by far the best father and son team around.
Arthur, you even popped out the undercover artillery mini LC's! :EyePop:
They were even biting on the 3" big hammer? They must have been starvingggg.
Looks like fun and a beautiful area too. My apologies for not being able to make it this trip, but I will try my best to make it for next time. Thanks for the invite once again.

Quick input. I hit the surf as well, a little more locally to my area though. Came out with two short flatties and a 3foot leopard. Even borrowed your rock Arthur :Secret: It's quite a view from up there, although not much bit there...huge amounts of potential. I even got DESTROYED by this huge wave that quickly built in front of me at my first spot, I had no chance of running so I decided to man up and jump my highest to try and ride it....well...lets just say that didnt work. :Embarrassed: It picked me up and tossed me like a rag doll, I felt helpless while floating and ended up getting slammed on my rear end, I was even under water for about 3 seconds lol. I quickly stood up, caught my breath, swallowed a good amount of salt water lol, gathered myself and continued fishing....15minutes later I realized my 2nd rod wasnt on my 3rd grip holster! I ended up never finding it, if anyone finds a convergence dropshot rod and a symetre 4000 reel, Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday! ...... Poseidon 1 - Me 0 we shall meet again.

Wow Guys,
Another great day out in the water. I just can't believe all of those huge perch.
I, unfortunately got skunked this weekend. in a bad way. Although Sunday was more of a recon day.
I might have seen some potential hot spots when the water warms up a bit and low tide areas.
I look forward to meeting up with you guys in the near future.

Time well spent with some well seasoned salty dogs!
I knew that it was going to be a good day right out of the gate when Marc yelled "Fish On" within the first 10 minutes and Nick dragged that big ol Poich up on the sand. Arthur.......your undying desire to stick a legal flattie in that spot was amazing and inspiring. Like you always say.....Work hard and play hard.....Lifes too short and the effort you put into both is inspiring to say the least. Dave and Mikey...You guys are great and I had such a grin all day long I think my smiling muscles in my face are still sore. Marc and Nick....props to you both for making the two hour drive to assist with the assault. Good times for sure.
Hey Marc.....I made a couple of phone calls last night and I have managed to raise 9.5 million dollars from the SWAT team. We are ALL hoping for a "Brotherly" discount
Well....gotta go.....sunrise in 45 minutes and I have a score to settle here locally. Was going to attempt to sleep in but I know there is a big old flattie with my name on it and I'm gonna try hard to find her!

Yesterday was really a fantastic day out there. I don't think I've ever been in such a wide open monster perch bite, and they were AGGRESSIVE! The perch were smacking hard baits left and right, and there were times where every cast was rewarded with a hit or bendo for those in the zone. Definitely a fun time, and am looking forward to putting in some more time in that area. Definitely got spoiled, but I know I'll be back.

As for me, I didn't wrack up the count some guys did, but I was swinging for the fences and trying to coax a legal halibut out of there. Didn't happen, but there is always next time. Still got some monster perch on the Flash Minnow 130, so I was just stoked on that.

Just a heads up to everybody as well... whatever you do, ignore ANY of Wingnut's get rich quick schemes.

Arthur,

Another surf fishing excursion, and another epic trip. It seems like all of the recent SWAT trips have been producing PBs left and right, and I definitely hope this trend continues. Definitely had a fantastic trip yesterday, and it was great to share the sand and all the laughs with you again. Plenty of WHY?!?!?!??! moments, a few "Oh shi-!" ones, and one or two "*!&^*&!!*" ones as well... but remember, no matter what, I never want to be a "Wingnut" Millionaire!

Maybe you should try to recruit some SWAT "pledges" who would appreciate it a bit more. :EyePop:

Dad had a really great time too, and is looking forward to hitting the surf again with you and SWAT again soon.

Mike,
We're definitely glad we made the drive, and would do it again instantly when we get the next call to hit it up. Definitely a great time seeing you again, and we should hit up a few more spots that are a little closer by in the next few weeks. I've got a feeling it's going to go off really, really soon.

As for that fund raising, I can say with NO regrets that I'll never be able to donate. Sorry to disappoint, but I think that there will be no "brotherly" help from me on this one.

Mikey,
Definitely great to finally fish with you, and we should do it again sometime soon. Your drive to help everybody around you catch fish is something that very few people have, and I was fortunate to be able to experience it today. We definitely owe you for being such a gracious host at your AO today, and I'm looking forward to hitting the surf with you again soon. Dave definitely knows what he's doing too, and it was good talking with him also.

Once again guys, great times out there today, and I'm looking forward to the next trip.

BONUS REPORT

Got up at 11am today after going to sleep at 10pm last night... 13hrs is way more than I've slept in a long time, and I definitely needed it. USC frat party Thursday night + 3am Wake up Saturday morning really exhausted me. Grabbed some groceries, did some homework, and realized I was pretty much done with what I needed to do for the weekend at 2pm. Hmm... weather was nice, swell is low, tide looked ok for one of my local spots, and I still wanted to stick a legal halibut for dinner this weekend. So, I was going fishing! Only question was how the structure was, and for that I had to drive down to the beach. I don't really fish this spot too much since conditions have to be JUST right, but it does kick out some nice fish occasionally and I had nothing else to do. Threw on a sweatshirt and some boardshorts, tossed the rods in the car, and told Dad we were going fishing again. Got there around 4pm, parked, walked down to the beach, and saw that the large amounts structure that usually mean fishing will be good were close to nonexistent... lame.

I headed towards on of the few structure areas available, an outer sand bar with an inside trough and a rip current on the outside edge of that. Dad cast first with his dropshot rig, lost the weight and went to rerig. The tide was definitely much lower than I usually prefer, but the trough was wide and surprisingly deep. I started slow rolling my LC parallel to the beach to give it maximum coverage. On my third cast as I brought the LC out from the rip current into the trough I was met with a nice hit. Some powerful headshakes and a good run later, I use a wave to help slide a nice, fat halibut up on the shore. Excellent! Taped out to 23in, so it was definitely coming home for dinner. Dad had just finished rigging up when I beached my fish, and said, "You're kidding me! I haven't even gotten the chance to fish yet!" We worked the trough for 5 more minutes, and then called it quits. 40min total from time we parked to when we got back to the car, so definitely a nice, fast local trip. No camera when we were there (left it at home since I wasn't intending to do a report for today), but I took two pics when I got back.

Damn Arthur, I was starting to have withdrawals not seeing your fishing reports and now I got my fix. You don't know how many of us live vicariously thru your reports, it's going to suck not seeing them on a regular basis. Good luck on that business venture, sounds really good my friend, sounds like you will be retiring early and spend all your time fishing. :Envious:
As for the report, fishing in Santa Barbara is amazing, beautiful beaches, fresh air and great fishing. I remember fishing all those beaches with you and catching all those Flatties a few years back. Good times, we're both going to retire early and fish all we want, sound like a plan buddy?
What a surf session for the SWAT Crew, that is no joke some of the best Perch fishing seen anywhere. Congrats to Nick and Mike on the PB's, a day to remember for sure. Great job everybody.

Thanks for the kind words Marc, now you know how i fly. Arthur, you were definitely possessed this weekend, and you came sooooooo close to your goal today. Gonna have to work on practicing knowing when to say when though. lol. Bones, I like the new old look just fine, we are supposed to look our age to show knowledge you know. glad all of you got to finally hook up with Dave. He is the most stubborn fisherman that i know when it comes to different techniques, but after about 10 years now, he's slowly coming around. I think Arthur is prepping me for his personnel guide when he puts the phone down, and focuses on chasing the other wet ones. Thanks again for a really fun weekend gang.

As I knew would be the fact, "Swat" would only out perform the previous days adventure. Once there is some solid intel, those top notch target's had no chance!

Great job out there P-Dave, Mikey, Nick, Marc, Mike, and Arthur!

I can only look forward to the next opportunity to get out side-by-side with you all again!

Congrats on some very productive Consecutive days in "the surf zone". :EyePop:
If I could do in one day what you guys average in half a day I'd be estatic. :Dancing Banana:
Looks like it may be a good season.
Excellent job by the entire crew. :Applause: :Applause: :Applause:

Another outstanding day....Looks like the mission went according to plan. Sounds like some you all shared some good times. Definitely had plenty of nice fish to go around. Well done guys.

JerryG
Thank Jerry, we miss seeing you out there buddy. I know those Pugs can be a handful...

The mini LC Pointer 65SP are deadly for Perch and yes, we did throw some 3" Big Hammer also. We caught them on just about everything, quite aggressive.
Dude! That sounds like quite a tumble in the surf. I'm glad that you're okay. The rod & reel combo can be replaced. I've lost a total of two set-ups myself in the surf over the years. :Secret:  I think that if you're in the water as often as we are, it's just a matter of time until something like that happens. Just make sure that when it does, you are prepared to handle it. Being in the surf requires taking some calculated risks. Or you can just resign to standing on the sand and fish... but that's not an option for me. I'd rather be in the mix... :Envious:

Reserved! Out the door at 4:25 this morning>>>

Wow Guys,
Another great day out in the water. I just can't believe all of those huge perch.
I, unfortunately got skunked this weekend. in a bad way. Although Sunday was more of a recon day.
I might have seen some potential hot spots when the water warms up a bit and low tide areas.
I look forward to meeting up with you guys in the near future.
Robert
<><
Getting skunked is part of paying our dues Robert. Our success always outweighs the failures and that's why they call it fishing.

So you beat out your previous PB Surf Perch by 1/2" Mike, congrats. Man, I was trying so hard to get that 16 incher. Even when Mikey & Dave told me that the tide has turned and the bite shut down, I was still throwing like a maniac. Oh so close... next time.

Looks like the background was a artist's creation on canvas. Cool Pic

you guys are KILLING me with these excellent and VERY productive surf reports!!

great job guys

One of the rare cases where quantity and quality matches up in the surf. :Big Grin:

Awesome, man. Thanks for letting us stuck on land get a vicarious thrill
Tim, you should come with us next time we head North. We'll both bring our fly gear and have a Perch fish off! :Envious: So far, we are tied at 15" for the year.

Another insane surf adventure by SWAT. Good to have you back on the board Arthur. Nice rubber ducky, was it a legal?
I actually found the rubber ducky washed up on the beach... lol

Wow those are some nice perch
Oh yeahhh, that they are!

Very impressive SWAT attack!!! Some monster Perch, WOW!!!
Thanks Frank, one of the rare times that I actually target Perch. When they are that size... why not?!? :Envious:

great report again, I love those translucent hali's, 30+ piggy perchys can drive a man crazy!.

p.s. what happend to the fish with the gash in the side??
It was a fun day. Not sure what happened to that Perch, came out of the surf that way. Bird, Seal, Halibut incident...?

Awesome report as always! Thanx for sharing....

TS
Thanks Steve, you should try surf fishing, bet you'd be great at it.

Marc
Marc, it always put a smile on my face whenever I see you & your Dad working the sand next to me. You two have a great father/son relationship and share the same enthusiasm and passion for fishing. Something that I'm looking forward to do with my own child someday. :Big Grin:
Nick, congrats on shattering your BSP PB record, very impressive! Marc, I tried hard to help you get that legal Flattie for your Mom, but you got the job done the next day, awesome!
I'm glad that you turned down the million dollars, we were just testing you... But let me know if you change your mind. Because I know that you were a little bit tempted.

Man, those are some pigs! Great job, dudes.
Thanks!

PIG PERCHES ALL AROUND,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,t/o,,,,,,,,,,,,
Thank Bob, sorry I missed your call from DVL, great job on finding those Stripers on the bait bite.

Dang what a slay fest on the perch the picture with the rod in your mouth has the craziest rock formation in the background I had to double take it almost looked photo-shopped.
Yeah, that area got some cool looking rock design and formation. Let's set-up a S.W.A.T. kayak mission dude.

GEEZZZZZ !! whats in the water up north ??
And can you send some of it down south ... lol
Football size Perch , luv it !

And hey, never enough pics ... lol
Less pollution I'm sure, you won't find Perch that size in Long Beach.

No camera when we were there (left it at home since I wasn't intending to do a report for today), but I took two pics when I got back.

nice piggies
nick
Thanks Nick, we'll find a way to hook up out there one of these days buddy.

BTW, Lauren wants to meet your new girlfriend.
We had a great time back then buddy. Before you had a kid, built a house and your business took off. :Envious: Just trying to keep up with you buddy.
Have fun on your cruise and we'll get together for dinner when you guys get back. Chaya on me!

Believe me Mikey, when I retire, I'll make it your full-time job to fish with me. :Envious:
Thanks for introducing us to Dave, totally cool and a gentleman of the surf. I'm still blown away watching him slay Perch after Perch fishing a grub with a missing curly tail. :EyePop:

WN,
More monster perch slayage,, awesome! Good to finally see S.W.A.T. Reports again, sure miss seeing the duo shoe of WN and Bones. Good to see Bones back at it as well. Always enjoyable to see the elite fishing of exfactor as well, you gents always hit the surf hard for a long productive day. Congrats on the new species and tje sweet c&r of the elusive rubber ducky , lol. Take care.

NG
It was great getting back in the surf for a couple of days NG. Two months is a long time for me not to wet a line. It will be tough for awhile, but I will try to find some time to get out there here & there... where there's a will, there's a way!

Great job out there you guys and those were some monster perch.
Thanks Tony, hope all is well with you buddy.

Maaan:Shocked: !!! Santa Barbera beats Malibu anytime

Nice Catchin :Big Grin:
There are some monster Perch in Malibu Daniel, but not anywhere near the quantity in the Santa Barbara coast line. You should plan a trip up there, and shoot me a PM before you do.

As I knew would be the fact, "Swat" would only out perform the previous days adventure. Once there is some solid intel, those top notch target's had no chance!

Great job out there P-Dave, Mikey, Nick, Marc, Mike, and Arthur!

Yes, it was a fantastic couple oif days in the surf, that's for sure!
Hopefully, the bite will continue to improve as the warm weather stabilizes and the water temperature rises.
