Fished LP today with d1LedHed and it was a little slow. Though we caught more fish, did keep and bring home 17 nice Bluegill, Redear and 1 Crappie (I just filleted them), but because the water temp was still somewhat cool, the bite was just so-so. d1LedHed did get a "Grand Slam" by catching the 5 gamefish in the lake; Bluegill, Redear, crappie, bass and trout. He also got a very nice 11 inch Bluegill. Though it was pretty cold in the morning, it turned out to be a beautiful day. We left about !:00.

Thanks Ted. I'll see if I can borrow the key soon and you and I will fish the docks again. It was pretty good today. That walk up the stairs though is still a killer, especially with a bag full of fish!

That Bluegill is a real beauty. I guess the cooler weather has reduced fish activity, but 17 keepers for 2 people is still pretty good.

I plan to go fishing this afternoon, probably Perris but not sure yet. I was hoping to take my nieces but their father said they are "going to the beach" today. How disappointing. I think they don't want to catch infection that made me sick earlier this week, but I feel better now.

That is one nice Bluegill!, me and my father also went that day but only caught one Redear. He was a nice size one though :) Even though we only caught one fish nothing beats a day of fishing with my dad. Ya it was chilly that morning and the fog just came out of nowhere too.

Here's another little report from Perris. After having to water the yard and go grocery shopping, etc. I finally got to the little pier in Sail Cove around 4:30 p.m. It was chilly, cloudy and windy. There were 3 other people on the end of the pier catching nothing (but they did have about 10 smallish panfish in a basket), but I went 1/3 of the way out and immediately started catching 7 inch Bluegills. It's surprising how well they were biting. The only problem was that in my hurry I had forgotten to bring my equipment. Next, I caught a good size trout (13 1/2 inches) with a tag on it (not worth any money though, I think). Then I decided to go home and get my stuff. By the time I returned, it was even colder and windier and the fish weren't biting nearly as much. :Crying: I did catch more small Bluegills that I let go though. The panfishing this year is definitely dependent on the weather, although I still found a school of willing Bluegills. Most of the Redears appeared to have moved on though.

That's a pretty good score you got there Fishmounter. You have every panfish species Perris has to offer. Hey, what ever happened to the green sunfish in that lake?

tacklejunkie

green sunfish?
Those fishes is sexy holographic =D

Yeah SoCal Bassman, The lake used to have just millions of those little sunfish. I heard that a few got in when the lake was originally filled with water back in the 1970s. They multiplied quickly in new fertile water. Because there were so many Green Sunfish in LP, they became the primary food source for the Alabama Spotted Bass, the only kind of bass in the lake at that time. (Largemouth Bass were not in the lake yet.) Green became the hottest color for plastic worms and other lures. I'm sure there are still lots of GS in the lake, but since their habitat is a lot of structure and shallow weedy areas, they just don't get caught much.

tacklejunkie
04-16-2011, 07:44 AM
Do the GS get as big as the dinner plates in there?
That would be a sight to see!

fishmounter
04-16-2011, 12:21 PM
They probably do get really big, with all the food in the lake, especially now with the high water flooding all that brush, but no one can get back into all that thick stuff.

skunked again

Very nice Jeff! It seems fish are coming out everywhere. Diamond Valley is definately picking up. I ready to go out Friday to LP for an annual BG/RE fish fry!

Somebody asked me about Green Sunfish at Perris on one of my recent threads. I find that they always seem to hang around rocky shorelines, except perhaps while spawning. When they drew the lake level down, most of their habitat was lost, which I think is the main reason for their population plummeting. The main rip rap remaining is along the dam, so I would expect the most Green Sunfish to be along the dam, close to shore among the rocks, unless something else is causing their decline. I used to catch them on the last jetty (lots 11 and 12) and in the marina rocks, and some of them were fairly good size, like 8-9 inches. I know some places that are still loaded with stunted Greenies, but not Lake Perris.
