On my way home from work, and always having a rod and box in my trunk, I had the urge to hurry by the lake to see if I could land ANYTHING by fishin small. 4lb line, crappie grubs, light action rod. Sick of the Bass skunk I kept getting there, I decided to target some craps. heard there were a lot and some healthy sizes so I put on a grub and started flingin at the nearest cove by my parents house.

For the first 10 minutes all I was gettin were snags that made my heart jump only to be let down immediately after when I realized what they were. moved my way around the shore and found a nice rock formation underwater jetting out at a point to a pretty deep drop. it LOOKED fishy so I threw out. half way in BIG SNAG. Wait, no this snag is moving. Reeling, reeling....landed on the grass:

PB Crappie (second one I have ever caught). Looks smaller in the pic for some reason but this thing was pretty heavy. No tape or weight :(. Threw em back and decided to hit that spot again.

Three more fish (on each cast) in a row would follow:

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/4666/photo0574t.jpg (http://img849.imageshack.us/i/photo0574t.jpg/)

Threw out a couple more times for some mean bites but no sets. Pretty gnarly school hangin out right there by the shore. Sun turned quickly into a downpour, called the 30 minute session to an end.

Now a believer that Canyon Lake HAS fish. Forgot how fun it is to fish with light tackle. Took one of the craps home to pan fry since I have never tried em. Any suggestions on how to cook em?

Nice going! That last photo is great! Looks like it's already mounted, with it's fins spread open and the lure in it's mouth.

Haven't fished there in over 25 years. I know the lake has changed alot. Good to see the fishing hasn't. Just waiting for the warm weather to get up here in lake Isabella and the crappie will be on. Keep that ultralight and jig handy. Catching fish after fish of that size on that rig will get you hooked on the crappie.

I dont know if it has to do with water temps or not but it seemed as if they were a bit sluggish to pull in. Compared to LM or even the BSP i have been catching in the surf, these crappies didnt put up much of a fight. At least compared to what I have heard about them. Still fun none the less. Most fish I have caught in the span of 15 minutes of that size.
