Since I'm an old fart I was waxing nostalgic today and did a little research on line looking for a picture of a couple of my old favorites back from my younger days (aka: ancient history). When I was a kid I spent many a day on the numerous fishing barges off the So. Cal. coast. One of the barges I liked the best, and for the life of me I can't remember the name, was one that we accessed off of the shore boat at Belmont Pier. It was a big old ferry boat and was anchored inside the breakwater around the end of the Long Beach Breakwater. While doing the on-line research the only thing I could find that looked close to what I remembered was the "Sacramento" however that was lost off Redondo Beach in 1968, which would have made me 13 at the time. There is no mention of this barge (the one I'm trying to find - not the "Sacramento") in the Ed Ries Book "Fishing Barges of California 1921 - 1998". I suppose its possible that it was the "Sacramento", however there is no mention that it was ever located off the end of the LB breakwater. Also, I seem to remember driving down to Belmont Pier on my own (which would have made me 16 at least) and going on this barge. Anybody have any pictures or info on this barge and whether or not it actually was the "Sacramento"? And if it wasn't the "Sacramento" what was it's ultimate fate?

The other one I'm trying to track down is the "Sharpshooter" out of 22nd St. Landing. I took my first full day island trip on that boat when I was like 8 or 9 years old. I rode the "Sharpshooter" many times and always loved that boat. Up until I did another search today the only picture I had been able to find of the "Sharpshooter" was is in the background of a picture of the "Holly B" while she (the "Holly B") was being rebuilt in 1978. (Picture at the bottom of this page)

http://hollybb.com/rebuild1978-1.html

Today's search revealed a picture of her on Allcost...

http://www.allcoast.com/discussion/postImages/6267.jpg

The last mention I can find of the "Sharpshooter" is in an LA Times article on fishing in 1988.

Anyway, I'm happy now to have a photo of the "Sharpshooter" but does anyone know what her ultimate fate was? I heard one time that she ran aground around Portuguese Bend but I've never seen anything confirming that. Does anyone have any info confirming that or is she somehow still in existence somewhere or did she actually meet another fate? Also, anyone that might have a picture that would be cool to post here.

Thanks all!

BTW - The web site on the "Holly B" is pretty interesting if anyone would like to look at it...

Fish Dog, I remember that barge. I was 12 when I started fishing that barge. I don't remember it's name. We just referred to it as the Belmont Barge. I do remember the GW was the boat that ferried people from the pier to the barge. Wow, that was a long time ago. So many Summer days fishing for bonita there. :)

I still remember an incident where I caught my PB bonita at that time. Must have been an 6-7 lber. This big dude in his 30s actually took it from my buddy and me. We were 12-13yrs old.

Still love that place.

Steve...wassup buddy? I think you came through this time. Annie B seems very familiar.

Been fishing much? I was on the T-Bird over the weekend fishing Clemente. Nothing but rockfish and big swells. lol.

3/4 boat in SD got 7 yellows today so won't be long before the season gets underway.

I know it wasn't the "Annie B". The "Annie B" was 2nd to last barge to close (last one being the "Isle of Redondo" in 1998). The one I'm talking about was an old converted automobile ferry (which is why I thought it could be the "Sacramento" - but I don't think the facts fit for her).

Here's a picture of the "Annie B" which was purposely made as a modern fishing barge (note the large openings in the deck you could fish through). She was moored off the mouth of the San Gabriel River....

Thanks for the responses but the "Annie B" isn't the one I'm looking for.

Here it is! "Found" the barge I was looking for. Its on a youtube video of Long Beach in the 60's:

Its on the video at 10 seconds to 12 seconds:

Can't make out any name on it but at least I know I wasn't imagining it. You'll notice its a lot smaller then the "Sacramento" and doesn't have the side paddle-wheels.

The barge in question was called the "Alaskan". I believe it was the ferry that was used to Terminal Island before the Vincent Thomas Bridge was built.

Thanks for the good info and welcome to FNN.
It does look more like a Ferry than a Barge.
Anyone seen GhettoDad 10,000 posts ? MIA. No posts since June 2011

The Vincent Thomas Bridge is a 1,500-foot (460 m) long suspension bridge, opened in 1963, crossing the Los Angeles Harbor in the U.S. state of California, linking San Pedro, Los Angeles, with Terminal Island. The bridge is signed as part of State Route 47. It is named for California Assemblyman Vincent Thomas of San Pedro. It is the fourth longest suspension bridge in California. It is also the bridge with the 76th longest span in the world. The clear height of the navigation channel is approximately 185 ft.[1]

The bridge was built to replace the ferries that connected San Pedro and Terminal Island, in anticipation of increased traffic volume accompanying growth of the port. State legislator Vincent Thomas, representing San Pedro, was the bridge's champion. A special act of the legislature[2] was required in order to name the bridge after Thomas while he was still in office.

Throughout the bridge's construction and in the early years after its opening, it was derided as a "bridge to nowhere". In the 1970s, however, its importance drastically increased as the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach displaced those of the San Francisco Bay Area as the principal port on the U.S. West Coast. Today, the Vincent Thomas Bridge carries a considerable volume of truck traffic from the southernmost slips of the Port of Los Angeles, in San Pedro, onto the Terminal Island Freeway and eventually to the southern end of the Long Beach Freeway; from there, freight goes from the port complex to the rail yards of East Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.

When the bridge opened in 1963, the toll was 25 cents in each direction, with the toll plaza on the Terminal Island side. In 1983, the toll increased to 50 cents for westbound traffic but became free for eastbound traffic. By 2000, the Vincent Thomas Bridge was one of only two toll bridges remaining in Southern California (the other being the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in San Diego), during which year tolls on the Vincent Thomas Bridge were eliminated. After the San Diego-Coronado Bridge stopped collecting tolls in 2002, the California Department of Transportation was able to devolve authority over toll bridges to the Bay Area Toll Authority in June 2005.
