I went out with my daughter this afternoon fishing the surf for the first time and had a blast. My daughter loved catching the sand crabs.

Lots of little sandcrabs and the perch were biting well. I just had a little trouble hooking them.

I was using #4 hook, and just getting them on there any way I could, is there a recommended way to hook the little buggers on?

fish with a much smaller hook and hook them through the but, point up. i use like a size 8 mosquito hook. were any of the snad crabs soft shelled?

You had to search for the soft ones, and most of them were all chuck full of eggs...

soft ones are the ticket for nice beans.

otherwise when they land in calm water they anchor themselves and dissapear.

Quite a while since I chased the bean. Maybe soon!

But also try Gamakatsu 504 #1 those are just deadly... while the crab is still alive. Can get beans, Perches, halis, sand sharks they won't get a way off those hooks.
Just be careful those are sharpie and as many other hooks these contain Lead paint. (known to initiate cancer)
Congrats to you and your daughter....

try using a #8 or #10 mosquito hook and you'll have more success on the perch.

Thanks for the advice, I went back out this afternoon with some smaller hooks and that was the ticket. Unfortunately I forgot to bring enough swivels and had to quit after I snagged onto the pylons for the second time.
