Ok guys this thing is WEIRD!! Ive asked tons of people and NOONE has a clue. It was caught in silverwood but Ive never seen anything like it. It has the body structure of a largemouth bass, the head of a catfish, mouth of a carp, gill structure of a LMB and the color is a mix between bass and catfish.....WEIRD!!

I also caught this guy funny too, I was using a deep crank and felt a thud so I tried to set the hook and it went slack so I let it sit for a minute to give it another shot at it and a second later another bump, I reeled in the slack and set the hook really hard this time. FISH ON! And BOY did this thing put up a good fight! He was pulling line off my basspro nitro reel and if you dont know, those reels are capable of 17lbs of drag:Shocked: I was thinking it may be a DD bass. Well I finally got him in and realized I had hooked him through the tail:EyePop:.

Heres some pics, I wish I would have shot a video of him.

I say a chubby Sacramento Pikeminnow/Sacramento Squawfish. Would have been nice tosee some better pics of it and the whole fish.
Here's a picture of one.

It came through the aqueduct system just like the stripers. I actually caught a Sacramento Sucker the other day out of the aqueduct. Very, very rare but it too ended up down here.

If that's an Asian carp, we're in trouble.

Judging by the maxillary/pre-maxillary structure I'd say you foul-hooked yourself some species of chub, dude - and probably a World Record... kudos! (Squawfish have a much larger mouth by body size than that fish does - Aisian carp have eyes that are set way lower in the head.)

Man, now Im getting kinda mad I didnt take more pics. I told my buddy to snap a bunch and all he got was those three. I was especially bummed about the one on the scale how he totally cut off the important part of identifying a fish. I shoulda layed him out and stretched the fins...

cutbait
03-30-2011, 02:02 PM
Heres a blackfish caught in SJ river

Fins all match, mouth is similar, size is similar,[cept yours is a fatty] color or yours is a shade darker. Scale pattern look the same. Humped back look the same. Forked tail on both, nostrils in same spot.. They are found all the way to Lake Elizabeth

Still have my money on Sacremento black fish but I reserve the right to be wrong.

The head obviously looks like a carp but couldn't tell you where that body came from. Although I must say the body resembles somewhat of a bass. Could it be a barp?

Inspector cutbait on the case. Yeah the mouth was throwing me off but the pikeminnow was the closest thing I knew of. That blackfish is most likely it. Even those two look the same but for the lips. At least they do on my small phone screen.

You ever get a Sacramento sucker out of the duct? I got one the other day. My first. Never seen one before in the ducks.

Cutbait is correct they are Sacramento blackfish, commonly referred to as squawfish.

DWR STARTS FIRST PHASE OF SUPPLEMENTAL
FISHERY RESTORATION PLAN AT SILVERWOOD LAKE
The Department of Water Resources has begun implementing a mitigation plan to revitalize the
bass fishery at Silverwood Lake in northern San Bernardino County, starting with removal of
undesirable fish species from the lake.
A seining boat has begun netting fish from the lake. Less desirable fish--such as carp, goldfish
and Sacramento blackfish--will be removed while gamefish, including bass and trout, will be
returned unharmed to the lake. Removing less desirable fish is expected to encourage expansion
of bass and panfish populations by reducing predation and competition for food.
The seining, which began July 26 and continues during August, marks the opening phase in a
multi-step program to revive bass fishing opportunities at this State Water Project lake.
“We are confident that the new fishery restoration effort designed cooperatively by DFG, DWR
and regional bass anglers can create a thriving bass fishery in Silverwood Lake,” said DWR
Director Thomas M. Hannigan.

I think the DFG has a lot of work to do because there is a mass amount of those blackfish over in deep water near the dam on the north east side. Decent size one for sure. Hope they get them because that lake has gone down the drain except for the stocking of fish.

Definitely not a 'squawfish' (name was recently changed to northern pikeminnow by the powers that be). Here's a true squawfish:

Yep definitely a Blackfish. FYI "Squaw" was changed because it's a derogatory term for native americans.

A similar namechange was done with a bird formerly called the "Oldsquaw". I believe they call them Long-Tailed Ducks, now.

jeeze, you scared the hell outta me with this post. because of the foreshortening, it looked like a bighead carp.

Nice fish, anywho.

It is a Sacramento Blackfish (Orthodon microlepidotus). It is not the same as a Pikeminnow (Squawfish) or a chub, though they are all in the same family. They are suspension feeders of planktonic algae and zooplankton and feed by pumping water into their mouth where their food collects on mucus secreted by a palatal organ. It then swallows the perverbial "loogie". They are usually caught accidentally and usually on a nightcrawler. They are one of California's native species.
