You could try Craigslist. Just do a search in your prospective city. Don't know exactly what you're looking for and what price range, but here's a few that I've found.

+1 on Craigslist as the place to go first. I picked up an '04 Tracker PT175 for $5,500 there. You gotta be quick on the really good deals cuz they go fast. If you won't be going to Skinner or DVL there are a ton of non-4strokes for very cheap. Otherwise the "legal" boats are going for a bit of a premium.

Thanks guys. My price range is to about 7K. Want a four stroke for sure, my main lake is DVL. I have been on craigs list for a week. Haven't found any good four stroke deals yet. Still waiting. Wish I could afford that Ranger for 17K, but not possible.

Any other websites or stores in so cal that sell used boats?

Angler's Marine in Anaheim sells used boats they receive from trade-ins.

:Applause: Yes Indeed. Always carry a deposit and a compression tester.
you could find a deal only to learn that one cylinder is 30 psi lower than the rest. Now you need $2000 to fix it + down time.

Mechanics love guys with money that dive into deals only to get burned. :Embarrassed:

Here's one that I saw today. It's not a four stroke but I believe that motor is allowed on DVL.

I don't know **** about mechanical stuff. Compression tester? Please explain.

You need X amount of compression (depending on motor brand, size, 2 or 4 stroke ect,) for the motor to run or run good. When motors get old they loose compression.
You need proper compression for the spark plugs to fire. When the compression gets low
the spark plug can foul, get oily. Then guys put in a hotter burning spark plugs for a temp fix. They come in various heat ranges.

You might hear it run decent with lower than normal compression but the end could be near $$$.
Low compession might run ok but there could be 5% - 20% power loss, maybe more smoke that good compression could fix.

The seller might tell you it is in good condition, runs good, show you lots of pics of all the fish he caught on the boat, turn key boat, it's all good bro. :Thumbs Up:

BUT, if you get some mechanical buddy or bring a mechanic and do a compression test and find out the compression is 90 psi, 85 psi, 90 psi, 80 psi on a 4 cylinder and you already did your homework/reseach on that type of motor and normal compression is 125 psi on all four cylinders. Plan on doing a a top end job (rings, valves) or a total rebuild.
This changes the price of the boat ALOT!

$500 (10 HP ) to $3000 rebuild depending on the size of the motor.
A new Mercury 250 hp 4 stroke is $16,000 + Labor. Outboards are not cheap.
A rebuild could cost as much as the boat.

This website below has a message board section only on compression. You can read some of guys horror stories about learning they have low compression $$$. Sometimes only one cylinder sometimes all.

What wears out ? On 2 strokes usually the piston rings, 4 stroke piston rings and valves. In the pic below the piston is shot. This can be the end result that also scrapes the cylinder wall when they finally fail. Then the block needs to be boared at a machine shop and the mechanic orders new pistons that are slightly larger. Total Rebuild. $$$

Get a rachet and a spark plug socket, compression tester and it could save you thousands and save you and your old lady from hating your boat.

How many hours on the motor ??? 500 or 3000 ?

500 could be like 100,000 on a car
5000 hours is like 250,000 miles +. Hours matter, ALOT, ask.
Many boats have a hour meter gauge.
Do your homework/reseach on motor hours.
Bring a check list with your data and questions.

Also the Impellar or water pump and lower gear oil needs to be changed every 1 - 3 years. Ask him when it was changed last, got reciepts ?
The rubber blades on the impellar get worn and can break off, reducing cooling,
and can fry motors. $$$

The rings are on the pistons.
