Most guys won't be fishing with the bad weather except maybe Brandon.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Long Beach is still feeling the effects of the latest storm to hit SoCal. Its beaches remain closed following a sewage spill.

The heavy rainfall caused an overflow which spilled 250,000 gallons of sewage into the Los Angeles River near Studio City.

People are being told to stay out of the water because the bacteria can cause illness.

The recent rains also triggered another sewage spill in Ventura County, where 10,000 gallons of waste water was discharged from Hill Canyon Treatment Plant into the Arroyo Conejo Creek on Monday.

Sewage Spill Occurred Near Colfax Bridge, Upcoming Rains Not Expected to Cause More Spills

By Mike Szymanski | Email the author | 5:37pm

A quarter of a million gallons of sewage spilled from two maintenance holes near the Colfax Bridge construction Sunday night because of a fast influx of rain that overwhelmed the Tillman Plant, according to an inter-department memo distributed Monday.

“Despite the severity of the story, our facilities were fully prepared and performed extremely well,” according to the document signed by Enrique C. Zaldivar, director of the Los Angeles City Bureau of Sanitation.

However, the spill ended up closing beaches in Long Beach according to the Belmont Shore-Naples Patch. And, some residents along the Los Angeles River are concerned that upcoming rainstorms on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday could result in more spillage.

“We don’t expect that there will be a cumulative problem with the rain flow, or that there will be trouble with the upcoming rains,” said Lauren Skinner, spokesperson for the city’s Bureau of Sanitation. “We are pleased with how the system worked and how our wet-weather preparedness plan worked. In some parts of the area, this was nearly a 100-year storm.”

Skinner was unaware that the area was in the same location as the Colfax Bridge construction, and nowhere in the report did it mention the bridge, which is scheduled to open in June after being closed for two years.

The Sani-Gram from the Sanitation director reported between 4.5 and 7.5 inches of rain fell in a period of a few hours in the San Fernando Valley, compared to a total of 15 inches for the entire year in all of Los Angeles. The rain fell at 1.59 inches an hour.

The Tillman Water Reclamation Plant located up river in Van Nuys couldn’t take the influx of sewage at that fast pace, and cause an “unavoidable wet weather sewer overflow.”

Crews were on the scene with vacuum tankers to prevent spillage into the nearby condo complexes and the CBS Studio Center. (A spokesman from the studio said nothing was flooded there.) Six sanitation trucks were seen combing the Studio City area both Monday and Tuesday looking for potential clean-up spots.

Crews worked from 8 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Sunday night. With the river peaking at four billion gallons an hour in Studio City.

No danger or health hazard is expected for residents along the Los Angeles River in Studio City, spokespeople said.

Lisa Sarkin, who has lived along the Los Angeles River since 1976, said she is concerned that the rain-saturated area may only lead to more spillage this weekend.

Sarkin recalled a storm in 2005 that resulted in “all the sewer covers blowing off around Ventura and Colfax in February and caused major flooding of sewage onto my street.”

A member of the Studio City Neighborhood Council—and who is actively involved in the community group overseeing the Colfax Bridge project—Sarkin said back in 2005, the water in the channel went above the intake holes, causing everything to back up into the streets. She said the problem was supposedly corrected.

“This time may have been something else because we never saw anything coming back onto our street, but sewage going into the river and then the ocean is a federal offense,” Sarkin said.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Los Angeles when storms return to the area on Wednesday and then a second storm blows in Thursday and Friday. “Overall precipitation amounts and intensities are expected to be less than the storm this past weekend,” the National Weather Service reported. “These additional storm systems could bring some minor urban concerns to the region. In addition...the upcoming rainfall amounts with these two storm systems is expected to bring a return of increased water flow to local streams and rivers.”

Meanwhile, the Tillman Plant is being expanded to accommodate more water to deal with such situations, and the construction is expected to be completed by July 2012.

Just learned about Mirror Carp in LA River. :Thumbs Up:
This will be high on the 2011 bucket list to catch a Wild LA River Mirror Carp.

Mirror carp are a type of fish, commonly found in the United Kingdom and Europe. The name "Mirror Carp" originates from their scales' resemblance to mirrors. They can grow in excess of 60lb - the last few British record fish have all been mirror carp.

The difference between mirror and common carp is both genetic and visual - biologically they are similar. The mirror carp was the first mutation of common carp, owing to two alternative genes, the S allele and the N allele. The genetic term for a mirror carp is "ssnn" (all minor). Common carp have an even, regular scale pattern, whereas mirrors have irregular and patchy scaling, making many fish unique and possible to identify individual fish by sight, leading to most carp in the UK over 40 lb being nicknamed. This lack of scales is widely believed to have been bred in by monks in order to make the fish easier to prepare for the table. The current British record (as of December 13, 2009) is a carp known as 'Two tone' due to its colouration, caught from Conningbrook Lake in Kent and weighing in at 67 lb 14oz (30.45 kg).'Two Tone' was found dead in his lake on August 14, 2010. The current world record (as of November 2010) stands at 99lb (45kg), caught from Luke Moffat's Les Graviers near to Dijon in France.

Contrary to popular belief, Leather carp are not Mirror carp without scales; there is a distinct genetic difference. Leather carp are permitted a few scales; however, the dorsal row of scales is either absent or incomplete. Leathers also have reduced numbers of red blood cells, slowing growth rates.
