i just got a shimano callisto baitcaster. i was spooling up with line and realize that the drag is too light.. i tighted the drag to the max and i pulled on the string and it just came out easily. i have own a baitcaster before but it wasn't like this.. is it a manufacture mistakes? or is there a trick i need to know?

Well If its bran new then its manufacture.

are you using braided line? soemtimes it slips on the spool and seams like the drag is loose

DarkShadow

or as my brilliant buddy did, he was spinning the drag in the opposite direction....?

if you wanna go back to braid, start off with mono a few rounds then surgeon knot your braid onto it.

this will take that slip away

Take your handle off and remove the drag washers. Clean the drag washers with WD 40 and dry very thoroughly. Now just put a VERY small amout of reel oil on the washers. That should solve your problem.

Send it back, you doing any work on it voids the warranty.

Honestly, don't be lazy, if it is a defect then return it, not worth messing around with it and then ending up messing up the reel worst.

If it's braid line you're using, then try this. Take all the line out, put a little tape on spool and then re-spool with braid and try pulling the line, if it's still soft then it's a defect. Like i said before "RETURN IT" haha good luck with which ever route you take.

What's wrong with WD40 and oil on the drag washers?

http://s3.hubimg.com/u/3391354_f120.jpg

I use WD40 for everything...I even spray it on my baits.

Yeah...wd40 is basically water, whats wrong with that?

Haha DS, as the name implies WD40 is a water displacement formula, but it destroys the oil/grease bond you have on your drag washers. reel oil has too low viscosity and you'll have to re-apply every few hours of use if you want your drags not stuttering.

by all means put them on your baits so they dont get water logged and some even say its a fish attractant, but stick to cals or shimano drag grease for the drag washers..

ohh and lets not forget how effective WD40 is on warts and bunions! :EyePop:

WD40 is NOT basically water.. quite the opposite actually.. and even if it is, you definitely dont want any water on your drag washers..

Not to be a smart *** or anything..
Function

The long-term active ingredient is a non-volatile, viscous oil which remains on the surface, providing lubrication and protection from moisture. This is diluted with a volatile hydrocarbon to give a low viscosity fluid which can be sprayed and thus penetrate crevices. The volatile hydrocarbon then evaporates, leaving the oil behind. A propellant (originally a low-molecular weight hydrocarbon, now carbon dioxide) provides gas pressure in the can to force the liquid through the spray nozzle, then itself diffuses away.

These properties make the product useful in both home and commercial fields; lubricating and loosening joints and hinges, removing dirt and residue, extricating stuck screws and bolts, and preventing rust are common usages. The product also may be useful in displacing moisture.

LOL, I think you just proved my point that WD40 is NOT water.. Thanks i guess..

While WD40, can technically be called a lubricant albeit quite a stretch, it is far from optimal in lubricating drag washers in terms of viscosity, longevity, heat dissipation and as ive said before, its ability to play well with other "oils and grease". calling WD40 a lubricant is akin to calling your saliva lubricant.. hey it works in porn right?!?

I can probably post up a few links to further assist my point, but I am too lazy and afraid my efforts would fall on deaf ears.. so good luck with the WD40 on your drags..

water..DISPLACEMENT..displacement = substitute in place of water....hmmm...

And the suggestion was not about using the WD40 as grease..it was to clean it, dry it and then grease it..

Basic or primary oil in WD40 is fish based.........

it will also soak into the drag material and ruin it....
Cals Drag grease ans Shimano Drag Grease are designed to coat without soaking in..
This also waterproofs them & keeps the WD40 from soaking in a ruining them...

I never knew that its fish based, i remember my chem class, it was kerosene and petrolium oil

Gosh, they think of amazing uses for that thing.

water..DISPLACEMENT..displacement = substitute in place of water....hmmm...

Dude, are you serious?? LMAO!!!

the usage of the word displacement here is to move/remove. not substitute.. I hope i dont need to explain this further.

Now, do you use the red little straw when using WD40 as lube? Or should I attack the area without the straw so she won't get weirded out?

Actually the suggestion was reel oil.. since you want to be exact and concise.. but still not a good idea..

Hahahahaa.. Best thread ever!!

I leave the usage of the straw to your discretion.. I do suggest warming up the can in your armpit beforehand as that spray can be quite cold..

lmfao DS....the reason I said Crisco (quick story) is my friend a couple years back had a Jigmaster and he called me and said it was "frozen" and that he couldnt turn the handle or anything. I told him to bring it to me I would take a look....i opened up the reel, which was VERY difficult, and saw this nasty, hard white crap FILLED ( i mean EVERY part of his internals had it) with it..i asked him "WTF is this???" he replied, in his Greek accent, "its Creesco" i laughed for about 30 mintues straight, called him an idiot, and cleaned out that reel, which took FOREVER...

ps it was that crisco white lard crap...lol

Although a common practice, it's not a good idea to spray WD-40 on reels. "WD-40 is a penetrating oil that gets inside the reel and breaks down grease, which leads to premature failure of gears and drag washers,"...From Shimanos people.Funny this thread turned into this.I have seen this happen to my friends reel that after he used it in salt he would just lubricate it with WD it worked for a few trips after a while it died.

That's why you use Manteca Rex.

And when you get a fish that burns some drag, it'll smell like King Torta while you're fighting the fish.

You could have just thrown it on the grill. The Crisco would run right out.

wrap electrical tape on the spool before u feel your reel up with braid...gives it something to grab on to
