Lake Mission Viejo 3/12/2011

Saturday's trout tournament was by far the best tournament of the season and was lots of fun! The last stocking was filled with Mt. Lassen albino trout. Everyone caught fish! Too bad it was the last regular tournament in Angler of the Year standings. Rich was the top leader. His 4 fish limit weighed 11.35lbs and it was also the heaviest stringer of fish. Not only that but he also caught the biggest fish in the tourney. His 6.35lber earned him a $30.00 gift card to Sport Chalet. He also by passed me in the points (69) system and was just shy of getting 3rd place. He ended up in 4th place but Angler of the Year only applies to 1st – 3rd place.

I ended up with 68 points and in 5th place. Also ended up in 5th place last year. Why 5th place? In the January and February tournaments my fate only brought in 1 fish in each tourney. Man did that suck! Ooh well! You can’t catch them all the time. The fish were in the north swim beach so do ya blame me? Many people blanked in a few tournaments. My 4 fish limit weighed 11.05lbs and good for 2nd place in the tourney. The big fish and heaviest stringer weight was what I needed to grab 2nd place in Angler of the Year standings. So a lot was pending as soon as we got on the water.

Glenn (NY4Reels!!) beat out Bryan and ended up in 2nd place for Angler of the Year. He is the first guest to ever achieve this. While joking with Bryan/Larry at lunch, we came up with a plan. I’m gonna print out the wrong tournament and meeting schedule for Glenn next year. Last year he missed a meeting (being tired from work) and ended up in 4th place. Good job doot! Had he gone to the meeting, the 5 points would have helped him greatly.

I had an absolute blast despite some obstacles. It’s amazing how many rookies you see on the water. You wish they would have some common sense.

1.) I was 2nd in line (5:05am) only to be 7th boat out. Why? The tackle shop had a new employee and she couldn’t get my boat rental info in the system fast enough. The employee next to her excelled with 6 boat rental orders before mine was done. It was pissing Glenn off but I held off the frustration. Glenn was like WTF is taking so long?!!! Dude! That was a tense moment to try and be first boat out.

2.) I lost my first fish, which was a 4lber that wrapped a guy’s anchor. The fish took off on a tight drag and I couldn’t stop it. Told the guy I’ll come over and net it. Asked him to pull up his anchor real slowly to see the fish. Your line is wrapped around the anchor. He touches the line while pulling up a little bit and the fish busted off.

3.) After Rich caught his 6.35lber, a pontoon boat with 2 guys anchors right in front of us slightly to our right side. Then they proceed to cast over our lines. If Rich were to hook up on a big fish it would have anchor wrapped their boat. We didn’t have much casting room, which is why I lost my first fish. While on a 3.5lbs fish, one of them tosses a mini jig and misses by rod and line by 4 inches. What an idiot! I said that wasn’t cool man. I’m on a good fish.

4.) While walking to the fish cleaning station, this kid was tossing a basketball. He bounced it off the wall and it ricocheted off the roof. As I came around the corner it hit me in the top of the head really darn hard.

I didn’t let these people ruin my day and I didn’t yell at them either. Just played it cool despite the stupidity. As you can see by the pictures we made up for it big time! What a blast!!

My 3 fish were caught on an inflated nightcrawler, a 1/4oz sliding egg sinker, #10 barrel swivel on a 3 foot leader.

1 other fish was caught still fishing a powermouse: An Berkley orange power worm, sunrise Berkley power egg, #8 Owner mosquito hook, 1/8oz egg sinker, #10 barrel swivel, on a 3 foot leader leader.

Rich with his 6.35lb trout. It was his very first fish caught on garlic powerbait.

I was there too.. Started at the beach for about 1 hour and half for 2 fish, then fished Markets Cove and just slayed them!!! 12 fish in about 1 hour.... All caught on a bobber and n/c set-up dipped in Bite On Garlic... Every cast in the cove!!! Limits for 4 people...

And those are actually called Emerald Trout that they stocked.
