So I've always noticed how most people on piers have at least 2 rods out at time. What I want to know is since pier fishing does not require licenses can 2 rods be fished at the same time?

Yep 2 rod max per angler on CA piers.

....Isn't it actually supposed to be just one rod? Kinda lame that they get to use two, and us licensed fishermen need a second rod stamp. =\

That's what confused me a bit. I was thinking that since we can only use one rod if we don't purchase the advancement. It's pretty BS that 2 rods can be used at the same time. Then again I can fish for batrays and macs at the same time if I hit the piers again.

Well actually its 2 fishing devices. Example (2 rods, or 2 hoop nets, or 1 of each)

Not going to research it for you but I believe the regs say you must be readily able to attend both devices should they both have fish on them. So if whatever fish takes you for a ride you must be able to care for the other one as well. If it is a friend of yours taking care of your other device in the water and they also have 2 devices out then they may be in violation of having 3 lines in the water or you will get hit for having an unattended device.

Hope you find the right answer in reading the sometimes tricky regulations.

Good luck out there.

There is no limit on the number of rods (in most cases) in salt water except on the piers, which is two.

In freshwater it is one rod, unless you have a two rod stamp, then its two rods. The two rod stamp is a freshwater only thing.

You might want to take a few minutes to read through these...

Eh, I guess I'll just stick with one pole at a time if I should go on a pier again.

Huh, no wonder Sportfishers don't fish for Sculpin in waters deeper than 40 fathoms.
