I need to know the identity of this rockfish. This is my 6th time encountering these strangers in 2 years. He looks tasty but I am not sure if it is legal to eat him. These guys resides right next to a rockpile that contains vermillions. To the southeast of this is a ledge that is filled with Bocaccio. Strangely, in between them resides this type of rockfish. It looks like it has a vermillion facial structure and salmon grouper qualities. I tried my best not to drift over this spot so I do not accidently hook these guys. But this time the wind changed direction and set me right on top it. They always look the same. Always large, about 7lbs. Deep red color with slight green tint from body to the face. The green shading on the face is very distinctive and of all the 6th I accidently captured, they all look the same. I am pretty sure there is a name for this rockfish and it is probably listed in the "uncommon list" and I cant find it.

Tell me what this sucker is. Possibly a rougheye? Only other two rockfish I can think of with a green tint is a northern rockfish, but it doesn't have the 14 dorsal fin. It could be a bronzespotted but it is just too red to be one.

They always come up with their mouths open and looks like a salmon grouper. Everyone on my boat keeps telling me it is a salmon grouper because it has a fairly large mouth. I know it is not a salmon grouper, so I dropped a live sardine to pick up a bocaccio to compare it too. I closed it mouth to give a better comparison. You might say it is a vermillion but it is missing the two gill plate spines. If you know what it is, please tell...and no I did not keep it.

Here is my fishing report:

My pops saw all the rockfish I brought him and asked if we can do a rockfish trip. I was suppose to go to work then ride my bike in the mountains right after, but I have not spent any fishing time with my pops in awhile, so I said OK. My dad invited our family friend Sammy along. He does all the work on my boat and if wasn't for him I be broke and not be on the water as often. I am sure some of you would recognize him because he probably worked on your boat also. Basically we had another excellent rockfish trip. I made sure we limited out on the rockfish for my boat's sake. Took a little while longer than expected. I had to pull out some secret spots to get us on the correct fish. We had 99% vermillions and 1% by-catch. I didnt take many pictures, but this is what I have:

This is what we were catching.

Sammy going bendo on some vermillions. He is a good person.

Lots of double red snappers on each rod.

End results. I am over rockfishing.

My lobster report:

I couldnt sleep. I kept on tossing and turning all night. So I took my boat out with my nets and dropped them near the MDR breakwater. I got lucky again and caught them at the perfect time when they were crawling back in their dens. Super quick limit of 7 on 1 set. Two of them being quality bugs. Went back in, didnt even clean the boat. Got home before day break and slept like a baby. Played out lobster pictures:

I wish it was always this easy.

I had a great time once again. Not having Dennis along to break something is a blessing. See you all at the fishing show.

Nice fishing Dat and thanks for the report! That kind of looks like a Mexican Rockfish looking at the prominant lateral line and color.

The position and shape of the pectoral fin, large head, shape of mouth, with the protruding lower jaw reminds me of the cow rockfish (cowcod) (Sebastes levis) .
Was there any yellow / golden coloring in the eyes?

Also similar to the quillback rockfish (Sebastes maliger). Those have some light orange spots on the lower sides, and could have somewhat smaller heads.

5 nets. I went solo. Could not sleep whatsoever. The lobster trip put a fix to that problem.

It's called a "Bolina". We caught a few while fishing a DEEP hole down in San Quintin. Like all RF ( Except treefish and Bocacio) they're pretty good eats. My buddy, the skipper said that they command a high price.
