Palo Verde Charter On The Tradition For Bass!

Hi there guys,

Wednesday Charter 08/01

I’m doing Wednesday’s report first this week and will post Tuesdays trip a little later. Went on a club all-day charter trip Wednesday out of Pierpoint Landing. Took Jimmy Hon’s boat again, the Tradition, to fish local waters i.e. Palo Verde Coastline for Calicos, Sand Bass, Barracuda and more importantly …… a shot at yellows. Just 17 seasoned anglers on the boat so there was plenty of elbow-room for easy, laid-back catching. Jimmy was skipper with Drew (1st deck) and Mike (also cook) working the deck. Jimmy was on deck 90% of the time too, as always, tending his flock. Bhaaaah bhaaah

Target Fish:Barracuda and Bass

Short Report-Wednesday 08/01

Dark-Thirty!
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0801headingout.jpg

17 anglers caught 1 Yellowtail, 2 Barracuda, 132 Calicos (with just a few Sandies mixed in) 4 Sheephead, a Perch or two, a number of Rockfish ….. including Johnny Bass, and a short Halibut (released). Grade of fish on Calicos was awesome. Had at least 3 fish returned to the water as they were breeder quality. Lots of 2, 3, and 4 lber’s. I know, I know …. these guys like to eat our friends. We didn’t do the usual pattern of most moo-moo at present i.e. ……… fish Horseshoe Kelp. As stated, we went up the line to fish off the Palo Verde coastline. Never did really get way in close but did cover a lot of ground ….. er ….. water. Fished fairly shallow … 30 ~ 110 feet, with Sardines or Anchovies ….either dropper loop, fly-lining, or with plastics …… mostly brown or green flavors.

A number of boats came our way …..1 moo-moo … the MC and a few Pbers. Most PBer/anglers had these fully tricked out cool rigs and knew exactly where they were going so they were ‘Gone In Sixty Seconds’ (everybody must have had their own agenda) that is …. except ….. except this one little boat.(See story in Asides)

Yellowtail

Way to go John on catching the jackpot fish! A yt was the winner today. The 7~8-lb fish was caught on a Sardine ……. not plastic! …… buddy fishing right beside me of course! Yet another guy sniping my fish! ha ha ha

Nice Bait

Finbait was great …… larger pinhead Anchovies to 4-inches and medium-sized Sardines. The dines were being loaded a ¼ scoop at a time so we knew they would stay with us the whole day and beyond. We also had frozen squid. Shrimp for the Goats were brought and worked out real well for the Sheephead Lady …. Not to be confused with Sheephead Girl ….. it’s kind of a super-hero thing.

The Days Fishing

Our trip began with a 5am loading and then straight off to the bait receiver. Mike had the galley goin’ with breakfast while Jimmy and Drew got our finfish for the day. We loaded put pretty good on the bait. Heading out the gate, we preceded to make a right and head up past Point Fermin and points beond. We fished 3 basic area during the day. Pulled the hook for the last time around 3:30~45.

Round-Up

2 Rounds

General Area 1
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0801widfststop.jpg

Round 1

Round 1- AM: Things were pretty slow with just a few fish coming over the rail. A couple of guys did get the initial bite which often occurs when one first runs up on a spot. We were plagued with NO CURRENT at first forcing us to make the first then second move once we could see things were not going to happen at those spots. Moved to another spot where there was a stronger possibility of some current developing. Sure did ……. but it was the wrong direction for how we wanted to fish. Jimmy’s good but he can’t always have his crystal ball focused on Mother Natures’ whims!

Sat on the next spot a bit to see if things might not change for the better. With the talent on board, we were catching fish …. scratchy …..but unfortunately we were getting a majority of shorts and lots of Mackerel too. Kinda weird …. Almost every place we went …. the box was lit up on the fishys, yet the current wasn’t conducive to a good bite.

Just about everyone catching fish were using either a dropper loop setup or fly-lining a livebait but there were a number of us throwing plastics for a fish here and there. The one yellowtail was caught on finbait. I got 1 hit I think was a yellow … not cuda on plastics. I couldn’t keep up when the fish turned after that first tell-tale strong, steady surge we know so well. Last year ….. I got 3 firecrackers one day at Rocky Point on plastics so I had some hope for the PV coastline itself! Just like Catalina yts ….. I think the little, un-educated firecrackers are easier to catch on plastics than when they grow up a little bit! Kinda like …. Hey … little girl …. want some candy!?

Round 2

Round 2- PM:Around noon-thirty …. After a number of moves to locate better conditions, we pretty much settled into a spot that showed more promise. With the current going from uphill to downhill and locations being sensitive to those conditions ….. locating biting fish was a challenge …. even for Jimmy. Wind, current, and swell directions reversing and or changing as much as they did ….we were lucky to hit the jackpot during the later part of the trip.

Whatever the case …. our next to the last spot was the one that made the day epic. We caught at least half of the better grade of fish on two different spots. Awesome day where 3, 4, and 5lb Calicos were not uncommon. Most caught their fish on Sardines with some on Anchovies and plastics. Our last stop gave us the comic relief described in my aside! For the change in conditions … check the stats. I caught all my fish on the plastic as described in the Plastic section.

Conditions: Warm but overcast in the morning with a comfortable breeze! Got sunny later in the day. Water visibility at maybe 10 feet. Air temp stayed in the 70º~75º during the fishing day. Please check out the graphics for additional weather and water conditions.

The photos above are just a sample of the fish and things of interest, at least to me, on this trip. Note: If you see a friend in the pictures, let them know they can copy the photo off the report. Directions: Click the right button with the ‘cursor’ on the picture, then click on ‘save picture as’, next choose where they wish to copy the picture, and lastly click ‘save’. Later, they can edit and print the picture at their leisure with a simple photo-editing program bundled with Microsoft’s Windows.

Plastics

Tough for Plastics for Me With little current initially which then changed to uphill, and now back to downhill the rubber fishing was a challenge. I stuck it out and fished plastic, as usual, all day. Caught a mere 5 legal fish with a number of short and just legal fish that were returned to their homes. None of my fish were of any bragging size. I went thru the usual assortment of colors … fishing blams, Kalins, and FT’s in greens, browns, Anchovie, Fire-Tiger, and pearl color combinations. Went ¾-oz initially then lightened up to ½-oz and then lastly ¼-oz leadheads both in red, yellow, and un-finished. Stuck with either 8lb or 12lb-test Seaguar fluorocarbon leaders .. 3~6-foot in length.

Not whining but … when a solid line of chum has been built, when there is a variety of good bait available ….used by skilled anglers who know how to fish finbait …. and … each preferring to fish different styles and depths of the water column…. the guy throwing plastics is at a distinct dis~advantage!

Yet my buddy on the other corner killed ‘em on a brown plastics that was something between a giant brown Bass-trix, Sluggo, and Jerk-it. He got a lot of hits on the troll or as the boat slowed to anchor.

No grip n’ grins for me today! That’s OK …. I blasted the sportscoats Tuesday on the Southern Cal. (report later)

Wild Creatures: Saw just a single Sealion. Cormorants, Pelicans, Terns, and Seagulls were around…….. especially when it was time to clean fish.

Asides

First and Last Aside
So there we sat on one of our many spots. Our one little moo-moo had the vast ocean to fish all by ourselves (honest …. except for occasional passer-by there was not a single boat on the horizon nor had their been for 30~45 minutes) Anywho ….fishing the bow … I noticed this blue blob bouncing up and down coming hell for leather from the south or is it east. In a passing glance … I laughed to myself and thought … if they continue their present course and speed they could ram and sink us …. ha ha ha

So ….. in a few minutes, without changing course ….. well …. actually they did alter their trajectory in the last part of their run and took a line that would have crossed parallel to our stern (pointing toward shore) at 25 yards max. Then little blue boat with 4 or 5 anglers arrives with an impressive display of mariner-ship ….. how ….. coming full bore at 100 yards away … by slightly, only slightly powering down, doing a 90 degree turn to port… now paralleling our boat with the engine revving, generating the largest wake it could possibly manage, white spray flying everywhere, and a pretty cool amount of wash being generated …. That’s how they announced their arrival. But …….. our intrepid nimrods were not finished yet …… Oh no ….. with little reaction from us … they chose to yet make ANOTHER full-power throttle up and the equivalent of a 360 degree brodie before …. gratefully …. they decided to actually cut the antics, stop, and start fishing. Sheeh guys …. If you want to use our chum line ….. ok ….. what was with the overtly aggressive behavior? Did we encounter a pack of Alpha-dogs???

The ocean is everybodys. Anybody can fish and boat anywhere while observing the law and maritime regs. Common sense is NOT required. Nobody said …… people had to display common sense when boating and or fishing. Whatever the deal, these guys had something to prove …… hope they got their moneys worth!

Telling this sites gentle readers is not going to change things …… Why? ……. you guys wouldn’t pull this sort of un-necessary stuff. But ….. ya gotta admit … it was a head-shaker!! Sorry Jimmy … I was busting up so hard at these guys and their display … I don’t think you knew what to make of my laughing. A serious-minded skipper ……. I’m sure you took their behavior as irresponsible!

End of A Fun Day

Had a great day on the water with friends and caught lots of fish. As always, Jimmy got us on fish and we managed to get lots of material for fish tacos. Sure would like to make this a monthly thing ….. kinda like a tradition on the Tradition. Thanks Jimmy, Drew, and Mike for a great day and one of the best big-fish Calico’ days I’ve seen (not able to savor myself) this season.
