Anybody want to split a rental or see if TO is free and split a charter Friday?

Title says it all. Work has been super stressful, and I scheduled Friday off to fish stripers. I'm thinking Castaic, either a boat rental (I have a fishin buddy fishfinder we can use), or we can see if TO is free and we can hire him for the day, in which case I'd want to leave it up to his experience to see if Castaic or Pyramid would work better.
Anyone up for it? I'm in Canoga Park and would be willing to drive if you're close!

Gave up and just booked a trip on a saltwater open party trip out of Cisco's. I guess it will be orange skinned fish instead of striped!

I guess if it’s JUST the “eating” experience that one desires then a 600’ plus deep, 15 minute crank would be the way to go.

I might add that if one doesn’t catch many big freshwater feesh, one will never know the true thrill cuz there’s nothing like them for challenge and battle..

And yes I am referring to Stripers AND Largemouth..

Can’t say I’d agree about the striped carp thing but to each there own…I guess..

I’d say go out and lay out some big stripers and catch them regularly …then make that assessment

Them stripey are a tasty treat as well…

Everyone surely has there own tastes in the fishing experience, just seems odd that you would classify such a worthy gamefish into the carp class…

Ohh well, I guess my rant is over…

Back on original topic: Pyramid would be a better option than Castaic right now for anyone else considering the possibilities

Thanks for the comments, guys! TO, you're right in that I haven't tangled with any big stripers in the last couple of years; just the cookie cutter 2-3 pounders at Castaic.
I'm going on the Sea Jay, so should be fishing shallower, in the 120-200 foot range. Bringing my Curado 300's and TE 300's, so planning to fish them light and have fun.

What's with all the fish porn? Damn, you guys are making me drool. I need to get on some fish soon. I am going crazy here at DUCT still trying to land my first DUCT fish. Now I am in the AV, I need to get good at fishing the DUCT. I miss Castaic Lagoon when I could fish there after work and catch something. Well, I did put in a lot of time to learn the lake and find out what works.

Hey maybe you will get into some nice Lizard fish on your trip. Hear they pull real good ! No really, the Sea Jay is a good small 10 pass boat that can get into tight spots the other big boats cannot. Post up your trip when you get back. Filling the freezer with sweet rock fish fillets is a thing I like to do first part of the season. Good luck.

Thanks for all the comments, guys, and sorry for the late report. Ended up with limits of nice sized reds; missed JP by this (---) much with a 5-6 pound vermilion, top 5 fish were all 4+ pounds, filled out the limit with 2-3 pounders. Best size I've seen in a while. Fished the backside of Santa Cruz, 250-300 feet deep. One guy hooked a close to 20 pound ling that he had to throw back because the season on them is closed until 4/1...

U might reconsider, it has it's time and place and for the individual who overlooks it's possibilities ..possibly overlooks some of the most sucessfull days they'll ever have..


So be it to those who do not wish to catch trophy feesh ! especially when certain conditions are present when other methods are not anywhere near as effective....

The wise angler who knows the time and place trolls when given the right conditions


I'd say stick to catchin them dank LMB if you choose to and no one will force a trolling pole in your hand just the same but make sure you are giving sound advice to those who have not yet experienced the power of the troll.

I'm sure we'll hear the same sort of angle when the live shad bite re-immerges !

Or maybe we'll see the baitn come out then...who really cares...it's about catching fish....sporting fish...fish that put up a fight and are great tablefare...

I'd take that over dropping down hundreds of feet and bringing up dead weight anyday...but we're not even comparing rockfishing to stripers anymore...are we ?

You guys are forgeting the basci fun..demental.... It's all about get out on the water or bank, getting your line wet and the feel of the tug tug at the end... wether it's black, striped or golden, or a red...
It's fishing.
Gary the only other thing I might add is that rock fish don't have to come out of 200 + feet of water and be dead weight on a ganion rig.... Shallow water rockcodding in less than a hundred feet has been the norm around here for many years and i hope still to be here unless they shut us down as there trying to do.
Granted the party boats are going to go out aways and and sit on a deep structer to fill there sack,and fill them they do, dead weight, try pulling up a ling cod and I can tell you you got a fight on your hands...
If your lucky enough to fish off a private boat the stones and structure spots off of the channel islands has some of the best bass and rock fishing in less then a hundred feet, you should get out there and try it before you right it off as dead weight fishing.
So no matter how you get your pulled and whats on the end of it when you get it in, it will always bring smiles all around...

I cannot disagree, the whole experience should be fun and that’s truly what it’s about !

maybe I lost focus for a minute, for that I’ll apoligize, I really didn’t mean to turn this into the full debate it is..but I am not solely responsible either…

It seemed the focus of earlier comments were to discredit the striper species and the act of trolling, I’ve seen so many state that striper fishing is easy but I’m sure those individuals do not catch trophy class fish in any regularity..

So I stated my opinions (as everyone is indeed entitled to).

My goals are not to debate or argue which this has turned out to be but it IS the fun you mention above and to share with others and (if needed) help direct them into that world of catching fish not only once but to continually catch fish….

I will conclude that I have INDEED been out rockfishing many many times in all sorts of depths from shallow to 800 plus !

It’s not my 1st rodeo, that’s why I do comment, it’s from experience but I will note that the lings I have NOT experienced but I fully understand what they represent…that would be one of the few exceptions, I understand..

I’ve been fishing all sorts of fish all my life since a toddler..not just freshwater species..

The only thing I see wrong with the 3 posts you've chosen to quote is in post number 2. As long as he doesn't keep more than the limit and they meet the size requirements he's done no wrong. The lagoon does allow 24 hour fishing so again there is nothing wrong. When they clean their fish at the cleaning station there at the lagoon and leave the carcases there for the raccoons there is nothing wrong.

The only thing mentioned in those posts that would be a violation is if he actually killed the fish and threw them back into the water, which as a responsible fisherman I'm sure he wouldn't do.

It should also be known that I fish for pretty much ALL species fresh and salt and treat each species differently relative to what they are.

I may be joking here about eating LMB but the truth be told, I only eat one or two on very rare occasions, very rare, I think I might have eaten 2 in the past 3-5 years.

I do have respect for them, god knows I’ve been catching them since I was about 8 years old, I don’t fish for them in any regularity all year but I’ll still wage attacks on them when the pigs are in solid bite patterns..

Released way more than my share without waiver…

I’ve had my share of the hatin’ “Gary fan club” in my years, they come and go, this iz just another, I think they meet on Thursdays at the Lion’s club hall to devise their plots to demean me : )
