2/11/11 - 2/13/11

Friday 2/11 -I was invited to fish on a charter trip with the wonderful people at Club Fish. They chartered the Pac Voy (Pacific Voyager) out of Seaforth landing for a 2 day freezer fish special. 2 days of codding with all meals inclusive for around $300 and some change. Ymin72 (mike) and another guy (who wishes to remain anonymous) came and scooped me up around 4pm. We got to the landing 10 minutes late because the boat was to depart at 5 something and the usual slowing on the 5 fwy. We were the last ones on the 20 man roster. I was # 18.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/1.jpg

We boarded the boat and signed onto the manifest and at 5:30 headed out for Colonet. As soon as we left the harbor, the galley cook (Jeff) whipped up a batch of spaghetti and meatballs w/garlic bread.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/2.jpg

I'm very familiar with this boat and with this crew - TOP NOTCH operation with the best cook on the water as far as i'm concerned. The owner of the boat had something to take care of but his right hand man (captain Greg) took the drivers seat today and had his regular deckhands Todd and Kyle on the deck. After dinner, Captain Greg comes down from the wheel house and gives us the speech and the rundown of what's gonna happen the next few days. He says, we're gonna start Saturday morning early to see for a few hours if the Yellowtails wanna play. Whether they do or not, we're gonna do some serious codding the rest of the day starting from 11am to sundown. Then on the 2nd day, we'd fish shallower waters (Pescadero Bay) for some bass and shallow water rockfish and close it out there.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02520.jpg

Went to sleep at around 9pm. BTW, I LOVE the sleeping quarters on the Pac Voy because they are air conditioned and they are only 2 tier instead of the 3 tier bunk system.

DAY 1:
Woke up the next morning to the yellow tail spot around 8am. I went out on deck to see 3 other boats out there. The Constitution - The Apollo and The Vagabond.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02525.jpg

I tied on my heavy blue and white 6X and grabbed my yo yo jigging setup and went to work. Wind wind wind wind wind wind wind as fast as i could for about 20 minutes straight with no love. After 30 minutes, my arm got a BAD cramp and i just simply couldn't do it anymore. Nobody was hooking into a YT and neither were any of the other boats out there. As a by-catch i caught a chubby little Starry-eye rockfish and a pesky Boccacio. As soon as my jig hit the floor, i felt the rod load up but both weren't the right kind.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02526.jpg

The Club Fish charter master - Steve with 2 by-catch fish, a Boc and a white fish.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02528.jpg

Captain Greg wasn't happy with what he was seeing so we wind em up and make a 40 minute move (the secret spot).

Okay so the engines die down and Greg gets on the loud speaker. "Alright you guys, 16 oz weights and 3 - 5 hook ganions. It's gonna be a deep one". I've personally never fished with more than 2 hooks so i was a bit uncomfy tying on 3 more hooks so i just tied 1 extra shrimp fly on (now i have 3 hooks). Everyone else had 3 - 4 - 5 hooks!!!

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02531.jpg

Before i go any further... let me just say - this next drift was COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF I HAD TO USE 1 WORD TO DESCRIBE WHAT I WAS ABOUT TO SEE IT WOULD HAVE TO BE... BANANA'S!!!!!!

"Bombs away" Greg says and it takes about a minute for us to hit bottom at around 400 feet. Instantaneously - EVERY SINGLE ONE OF OUR BAITS GETS SLAMMMMMMMMMMED. My ganion got hit so hard, my pole literally has a ding on it from hitting the rail. I saw guys bringing in 8 pound reds 5 at a time!!! 9 pound reds on a quad hook up on 1 ganion. It's hard to explain how heavy a 16oz weight + four 8 lbs reds feels when you're fishing 70 fathoms.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02560.jpg

Actually, the first fish i caught on this spot was a nice lingcod but it was SO STUPID CRAZY WIDE OPEN, i didn't even take a pic of it. (I actually caught 2 lings on this spot but the sheer pandamonium had my blood rushing through my body and my hands were shaking trying to get my hooks baited fast enough). Everyone got in on this action and we couldn't have asked for more.

Then i look over at mike and he's bent over like CRAZY.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02556.jpg

3 minutes later i hear someone yell "COW COD!!!" and what do i see? Mike hooked into a nice fat cowcod (which in Mexican waters is legal).

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02532.jpg

This drift produced the best red fishing i've ever seen in my life and probably ever will. By 11am my gunny sack (#18) was filled to capacity with reds.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02548.jpg

So i go into the galley for lunch time where Jeff cooked me up a delicious patty melt w/swiss cheese and carmelized onions.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02547.jpg

Then after scarfing down the patty melt, it was back to the rail for more red action.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02550.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02543.jpg

As my arms are becoming more and more tired from this carnage i look over at Mike again and of course again he's bent over... de ja vu - 3 minutes later.. "COW COD!!!"

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02545.jpg

This one wasn't quite as big but it was different to be able to catch a species that's off limits in California - no matter how big or small it is. We fished the heck out of this ridge and we collectively decided that we were all exhausted. So we made a move to a bit shallower water (50 fathoms) which still is pretty deep. It was becoming mid afternoon and the Club Fish people were really bringing over a nice assortment of fish.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02554.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02555.jpg

As the sun was finally starting to go down into the water, the air got noticeably colder but the water stayed flat. And when the sun finally set, we were bombarded with a hoard of these cute little pinback sharks which were promptly let back down.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02566.jpg

Once it got dark, the crew brought out all of the days catches from the fish holds (which in this picture due to the bright light looks strikingly like the briefcase from Pulp Fiction).

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02568.jpg

Oh yeah and here's one of the lings that i caught earlier in the day but it was already rigormortis'd out. It was much bigger when i caught it - it really was.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02572.jpg

End of day 1 fishing.
My count: 9 reds - 2 Lings - 4 Starry's - 3 Bocs

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02570.jpg

Went into the galley where Jeff had prepared a phenomenal Roast Beef, Mashed Potato/gravey, steamed veggie and dinner roll plate.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02573.jpg

After dinner, went outside to see Kyle and Todd cutting up the catch.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02576.jpg

Day 1's Jackpot went to another Ling that was around the 14 pound mark. I swear there were reds that were pushing 11 pounds though. No exaggeration.
With a full belly and understandably UBER tired - i washed up and went to bed.

Day 2:
Woke up the next morning at 4:30am and we were considerably closer to shore. They called it "Salsa Puede" (Pescadero Bay). Brrrrrrrr! it was cold. Mike put on a white lead head and pinned on a squid as was rewarded with a few Calico's (14 inchers) and some other assorted fish.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02581.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02579.jpg

I was eager to try bass fishing out since it would be a welcome change from 400 feet of 16oz grinding. Unfortunately for me, the lightest line i had was 40# so i was WAY to over geared for kelp bass. I got a few nibbles but no love here. I weighed my options... getting breakfast and warming up outweighs freezing outside and trying to catch a bass. So i got myself some breakfast and coffee and warmed up in the galley. Scrambled eggs, toast, sausages and bacon - thanks Jeff.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02583.jpg

After the sun peaked over the horizon, that's when the shallow water fun started. I put on a sliding sinker and a 2/0 hook and let it sink and managed to land this greedy Tree fish.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02585.jpg

A Club Fish memeber (who could pass as Ghetto Dad's father/older brother) hooked into this nice grumpy Sand Bass.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02584.jpg

Another club fish member hooks and lands a nice red (like we need more of these).

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02586.jpg

Another Club Fish angler brought this nice Sheephead over the rail.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02589.jpg

And again yet another Club Fish member brings a Cabby over the rail.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02609.jpg

The bite eventually slowed down and so we picked up the anchor and made a few moves here and there. On the way to one of the spots, we were met by a school of bottle nose dolphins who wanted to play with the boat.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02594.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02599.jpg

The final stop of day 2 was relatively shallower and it was white fish/bank perch central. I must've caught about a trillion white fish here. They of course needed to be fished with smaller hooks and 8oz weights would do just fine.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02615.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02622.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02610.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02617.jpg

Of course others would still be catching different fish at the bow like this barber pole - and even another cow cod came over the rail.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02611.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02623.jpg

We finished the 2nd day here. We picked up the anchor at around 2:30 in the afternoon and started to head for home.
My count: A tree fish, a billion white fish, 5 bank perch and a bad sunburn on the back of my neck.

Kyle and Todd cleaning the fish for the end of day 2.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02626.jpg

As we were heading home - we passed a few private boaters and waived everything was fine and dandy... until we saw these knuckle heads who thought it would be funny to roll along side next to us.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02627.jpg

As it got closer, we realized they weren't knuckle heads but 2 Mexican Federales trying to make contact with us...

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02628.jpg

Then 2 became 5...

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02630.jpg

And then 5 became 5 with automatic assault rifles..

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02632.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02633.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02634.jpg

They gestured at us to get on Channel 16 on the radio to talk to our captain... Whatever Captain Greg said to them worked because they circled our boat once and then they let us pass with out even boarding our boat.

Well that was interesting.

With the Federales out of sight, we went in the galley and had our last dinner which turned out to be the best yet. A 1/4 chicken dinner with rice pilaf and veggies. Jeff - you're the master

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02636.jpg

All in all, what can i say? It was quite an awesome trip and one that i will never forget thanks to the Captain and crew of the Pacific Voyager.

Damn K3V,
Those are some heavy duty reds in those pics, I can only imagine trying to reel in 3 or 4 with a single speed reel.
Nice ling you had in the pic, what was the size of the other ling?
I guess your p.s. means you're not hitting up the thunderbird, yes, I read between the lines...:Big Grin:
It's all good, there's a whole lifetime in front of us for hitting the rail.
Thanks for the awesome report and all the pics,

Whattup Big Rob - yeah never would i have guessed the codding would be that crazy. The first ling i brought up was about 9 pounds and the second was slightly smaller at around 8. Both were caught on a full live squid and obviously they were both on the lowest hook (closest to the floor).

As far as Thunderbird goes - u know i can't fish in the middle of the week as much as i'd love to. Keep in touch though homey - we'll figure out another trip soon - i was thinking we can charter the Dreamer out of Peirpoint landing for some WSB action. I'll round up the posse and see what they say.

As far as mexican rockfish limits? I don't know what the rulebook says but i know what i took home... glad those Federales didn't board. HAHA i'm kidding i'm totally kidding. I think its like... 5 fish per species and a 15 fish total per day or SOMETHING to that effect. I wouldn't know bcuz i only ended up with... 3 fish.

Don't lie Kevin, you're going away to the big house for awhile aren't ya...? :Big Smile:
Excellent report, beautiful Rockfish, never seen so many quality ones in one session.
Go take your break, reload and get ready for the next round.

Yeah - i gotta turn myself in to Theo Lacy for a few months... again.

LOL - j/k - i actually just bought tickets to "wicked" (some musical about the wizard of oz) that's gonna be playing in costa mesa next month. I'm an open minded guy so... i'm trying to be positive about it.

Wow, nice report on a great trip! I'm not sure what's better; fishing on teh Pac Vpyager, or Mr. Jeff's cooking. Did he make you guys chowder?

Jeff's Manhattan style chowder w/fresh snapper chunks. Okay guys - Between me and my 2 buddies, we LITERALLY ate 9 bowls of this chowder - NO JOKE. It was the PERFECT blend of spicy and hearty and fresh all at the same time. We each ate 3 bowls and i even had another bowl with my dinner. SO BOMBAY.

Mike, nice cowcod!

fa sho Nick - i know you wudda been right there next to me with your light tackle gear fishing 420 feet - DAMN the 2nd morning in Pescadero shallow water would have been so fun if you were there w/ure bass gear --- i had no idea we were gonna be fishing the bay.

The lings were dinks both just under 10 pounders. I think mike's cow was about the same in density.
