I have a shimano v series rod thats 8-14 lb 1/4-1/2 oz rod paired with a shimano cardiff 300. I am planning on trying braided line for the first time. With this rod I usually take to the local lakes for bass stripers and also the harbors.
What lb test should i use? Is the braid tied directly to the hook or is a mono or flouro leader is used? thanks

35lb braid would be my personal preference, but others would suggest as big as 65lb or as small as 15lb. I tend to stray away from fishing straight braid connected directly to my tackle unless it is a strupid wide open bite and they will eat anything and i dont want want to lose tackle or constantly re-tie leaders. I would use a short shock leader of quality mono or flouro about the length of your rod connected to the main line with a double uni or improved albright.

+1 0n the 35lb braid. It's my weapon of choice for topwater lures. Strong enough to handle almost anything in fresh water.
