Fishing Saturday, 2-12-11 with Tony Sr. on his 18’ Sea Swirl “ Fish2XS” and with friend John, I left Diamond Bar at 5:05 am to meet both Tony and John at Shelter Island in San Diego by 7:00am.

We launched, and cleared the harbor at 7:20am, reaching our destination of North Coronado Island at a little after 8:30am. There was a 1 foot wind chop most of the way, and the winds were very calm. As we reached our destination, the seas settled down into perfect grease calm conditions.

The 2 part bad news was that the fish finder went on the fritz? Normally Rockfishing with no fish finder is a lost cause! However, Tony had many saved spots on his GPS, and we relied on starting at these waypoints to find fish. The second part of the bad news was that conditions were just too nice! No wind, no current, few fish biting.

The jackets and sweatshirts were shed very early. You could see forever, just plain crystal clear skies. When you can see Dana Point from the Coronado Islands, and San Clemente Island from land , you know it is a special kind of clarity!

We scratched up a few bites on small and larger Starries, Green Stripe Rockfish, Bank Perch, Copper Rockfish, and one Chili Pepper. John caught the big’n of the day, a four pound Copper Rockfish.

The conditions remained beautiful throughout the morning and into the later afternoon. The current was little to nothing most of the day. At 2:30 pm the wind picked up a bit, and the drift became rapid. The few fish we caught were mostly Sand Dabs and small Starries in these conditions. We called it a day at 3:30pm, with the last hour resulting in few fish to show for our efforts.

We ended the day with sixteen keeper fish, although many were only one pound or a bit bigger. At least we had some fish tacos for dinner, and a fun day on the water, with sensational weather! Eat your hearts out Chicago!

Tony Sr., always a blast to fish with you, and John great to share a rail with you again, thanks for the invite, a fun trip for all!
Hook up!

Nice work, especially considering the lack of electronics.

Hi Cory,
Sucks to hear about the fish finder going on the blitz, been there, done that.
At least he had the saved GPS spots, like you said.
I was wondering how the fishing was at the Coronados.
Thanks for the report and pics,
Robert

Great report! I remember Feb as the month of calm seas.
