Good idea! Not sure it this place is still good, but waaaaaaaaaay back in the mid-60's I did some summer work on both the DFG's boats in San Pedro. In one day, we netted enough crab to fill a 55-gallon barel!! Cookie steamed onboard, and we had tons of crab cocktail that night for diner!! Oh yeah! The boats were tied up near 22nd St. Landing ... Just a thought! No 'bus' though!

In regards to Oceanside.
I've seen guys drop the nets along the jetty leading into the harbor.
Were they successful, I didn't wait to see if they caught anything.
Whatever you decide, Good Luck,

Keep in mind on a pier you can have only 2 nets and no fishing poles.
Or 1 net and 1 pole, and your lobster card must be filled out before you start.

Mission Bay on Sunday sucked, we got there about 7am fished all over started at the mouth of the bay,we set out our lobster hoops quickly, fished for a bit then noticed our trap bobbers had sunk, w t f? thats what i get for being nice zip tie the excess rope so it dont float all over... then off through out the bay to crown point, didnt even get a hit all day, didnt even see any shore fishermen or other boaters get any hits...about 2:30 the tie was coming in strong, we decided to head back toward the mouth again, and what do i see, the bobbers staring at me, we swung by and picked them up, no bait was missing... we started fishing again, Hits asap on the dead fish we got from the barge.. a 24 inch halibut, a 12 inch bass and a couple other hits that got away, had 3 poles hitting at once, then we must have drifted off the spot, then the hits stopped... by know it was after 4pm and had to go..

All i've ever caught brought up off the piers is Spider Crabs and swimmer crabs. I saw a lobster once, a guy snagged it, only lobster i've ever seen.

The guy kept the lobster, DFG nabbed him like 20 minutes later, found it in his duffle bag. Let the good times roll :P

edit: Piers = Newport, Balboa, Redondo

The parking lot you can camp out and then fish all you want, I wrote about this are once before, i didnt catch SHAIT, and the people i saw said they NEVER seen anyone catch fish... thats amazing to me, since this looks like a very nice area, you got Surf, and the Bay in one...this time i hope there is FISH... and lobsters off those rocks... any idea what side of the rocks i should try 1st with my nets? Thanks"out in the rain"

went fishing in the above spot, and like i said before it completely sucked, i fished off the rocks, in the bay and the surf... NOTHING...after fishing all day we headed over to the oceanside pier about 7pm, it was starting to rain hard, we brought our rain gear just in case so it was fine.. I threw my nets off the pier and the first pull i got this Bug, i was excited, i went back to the van and got the big ice chest hoping for a big night, it was raining, hailing, wind, high tide was coming in, and the waves were big, everything except the full moon, well we fished until 3am , we caught 4 small sharks, in my nets i got an octopus, a shrimp, the ONE Lobster some small crabs and like 25 large starfish and when we left i was frozen, the cold was very intense... But ill do the same ole thing tonight....

I went out closing night to the IB pier and to my surprise we caught 3 short bugs, 2 legal stone crabs, and a crap load of small 2" yellow stone crabs. I got out there pretty late and still managed to catch those bugs which was short by much. After 10pm the crawl just stop and we didn't anything...not even a crab. But it's good to see/know that there's bugs there. I'll be definitely be there next season to give it a go. I hope I don't piss anyone off by letting people know there's bug at that pier...oh well, IDGAF. The ocean belongs to us all. Happy hunting and God Bless y'all.

keep it up marine, you should check out O-side pier, for one its open 24/7, i caught lobsters then this season, since tha season is over, no hurt in trying to catch some nice sized crabs... try it during the full moon and NASTY weather/water conditions... you may be surprized what you get... good luck

Thanks man, I've been to that pier many times in the past and have caught NOTHING....not even bait fish haha. I've always done well with the crabs in IB pier but since I live in Oceanside now that's too far of a drive esp with $4+ gas prices. I guess I'd give OS pier another try soon in the spring/summer time.

AngelTheSeaguy
04-01-2011, 07:10 AM
I believe the limit for dungeness crabs is 10 an the season ends June 30. All other crabs are open year round and the limits 20.

Hamburgesadamus

The limit is 35 for other crabs, not 20.
