We rolled off the dock with 23 anglers, a bigger load than what we’ve been having. First order of business was to load up on sculpin. Once again we limited out in a fairly short order, but we had to sort through a few shorts to get there. Once again I used the big scampi with the B2 squid above it, with the B2 squid catching the bigger ones. Afterwards, we headed on inside for the bass!
Bass fishing was okay but a little tough. This day it didn’t matter what you used or what pound line – all you had to do was put your bait in front of a hungry one. We landed a few bass on the first spot, but the water was a bit off color so we moved out into a little deeper water. For the remainder of the day we bounced around on a few spots picking a few bass here and there. For a while we swung around a little bit, making it a little difficult to keep your bait in the structure, but we continued to land a few nice bass. The overall quality was definitely better than last week.
Like I said, it really didn’t matter what you used – the high stick for the day, my friend John Kim, got six or seven bass on thirty pound test, and the rest of us were using 20 or 25 pound and didn’t do as well. I caught all three of my bass on the mogambo, but others did well on the straight leadhead.
At the last spot, the spot took up the whole starboard side. I slipped off to the bow and fished next to my friends Ray and Jerry as it started to get a little crowded further back. I landed a few nice sculpin which had to be tossed back and so did Ray, but then Ray hooked something big. He got it all the way to color and we saw that it was a BIG triggerfish. Morgon ran back to get the net, but unfortunately, it pulled the hook. Ray stood their frozen in disbelief for a little while, and with that he was done for the day. But we’ve all been there every now and again!
Soon after Morgon pulled the anchor and we were headed for home. Jackpot was weighed up Jerry against John Kim, and they looked very close, but John’s was a little bit heavier. Anyways our final count was limits of sculpin and about 35 bass. Fishing wasn’t spectacular but we got a few and nicer ones at that. Great times, great fishing!
