I had an awesome day at Lake Cachuma yesterday with Exfactor & Crappie Mike slaying slab Crappies for Mom on Vietnamese New Year. Afterwards, Mikey (Exfactor) said to me, "Make the drive up here again tomorrow to fish with me in the surf and I'll teach ya something new..." Mikey is like Yoda to me. He has taught me the ways of the Force and showed me so many different things to broaden my horizon. :Big Grin: Never one to turn down a chance at a new adventure, I took him up on his offer and headed North once again today.

Met up with Mikey and headed out to his backyard to hunt some saltwater slabs. Swells were up and the washing machine conditions made Perching the obvious choice. I decided to have fun with it and pulled out a variety of artificials to throw at them. Various grubs & swimmies, little Kastmaster & Kroc and a mini LC. We worked the beach and found some holes and laid waste to the BSP population... fun stuff.

When we were all done Mikey says, "The tide is pretty low, time for your next lesson..." Then whisked me off to an undisclosed locale for a lesson in Clamming, something I've never done before. :Big Grin:

Mikey, you are one generous individual. Thank you for teaching me and freely sharing your knowledge. Your experience in both the fresh and salt is second to none and I'm very lucky to have you as a friend and mentor.

Have a fantastic weekend everybody... Go PACKERS! :Envious:

Pretty good for a couple hours of work...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/021-7.jpg

We collected over 100 Clams. After sorting them out and measuring each one with the gauge, 88 were of legal size and kept. What a treat! :Big Grin:

Mikey gave me a quick lesson on how to purge them of sand by soaking them in a bucket of saltwater with cornmeal for a couple of days.

The fruits of our labor. In a couple of days, most are destined for the steamer and some to the frying pan to be sauteed with garlic, butter and a touch of white wine.

Great report Guys! It looks like you guys had a lot of fun.. Way to go on the new species.. If only the short to legal ratio for halibut was as good as it is for clams. Looks like Mikey has the shell fish dialed. This is the first I've seen a clamming report on the boards. Look forward to fishing with you guys soon.

Looks like an awesome time spent in the surf, that first shot looks like a real cool place to toss the LC for some halibut, too bad about the conditions though...
Thanks for another excellent report,

Nice size clams you've got there.
I bet your mom would like them :Big Grin:

You said that you measured them later to see if they are legal?
Technically, I believe that if you put them in your bucket, you are in possession and if they are undersize, you can get a citation.
I'm not trying to be a di*k or something, I just don't want to read about someone getting in a hassle with the dfg. over this

Hey, what's with the adding of cornmeal to the water for purging.
Did exfactor give an explanation?

Thanks, Scott

Scott, you're probably correct on the measuring of the clams.
As per Mikey's direction... add cornmeal to the saltwater mix for two consecutive days to purge the clams of sand. The clams will stick out their feeding recepticles and feed on the cornmeal and spit out the sand in their system. When you cook & eat them, it won't be so gritty.

I've always wanted to go clamming. My goal is to find a beach in So Cal where I can camp and dig for clams to eat at the campsite. So far no luck. After hearing about the purging, maybe it's not a good idea to eat them right after...

unless you enjoy chewing on sand when you eat clams, the corn meal gets eaten, and the sand gets purged. maybe Arthur will take a shot of the bucket before he processes them today.
When we used to go clamming as a family, we used to take empty milk jugs and fill them with saltwater.
We would change the water every day and after 3 days or so, the clam's stomachs would be sand free :Surprised:
But, if adding cornmeal speeds up the process or helps rid them of the black contents , I'm all for it
I'll definitely give it a try!

Actually, you're supposed to keep ALL clams UNTIL you reach your limit (even broken ones), THEN sort out the legals, then return the shorts to the ocean.
After carefully reading the regs, you are right... I stand corrected

(d) Clams ashore: Clams which have a size limit when being taken must be brought ashore above the high water mark in such a condition that the size can be determined.
Such clams not in the shell may not be transported or possessed, except when being prepared for immediate consumption.
Clams which have a size limit and are not retained shall be immediately reburied in the area from which dug.

Awwwww man, I was like "yeah, I wanna try em now!" UNTIL I saw this pic...made my stomache turn for some reason :Crying:
Ah, go ahead and try it Frank. Tastes a lot better than it looks... lol
Good luck on the recon tomorrow. There are a few of us out there tomorrow. :Secret: S.W.A.T. Central Command eagerly awaits the updates. I'll be back in town tomorrow night and will assemble the "Team."

Excellent report and pics Arthur...Mikey definitely know his stuff when it come to fishing.
He certainly does Vince. You're not too shabby yourself buddy. I'll be one of the first in line when Red Drum MDR Guide Services goes on-line.

Great report , and Pics.
Thanks man.

I can tell you that it works like a charm. I followed Mikey's exact purging instructions and the sand was pretty much nonexistent came serving time. :Big Grin:

Great post Arthur, always fun following your adventures....thanks for sharin!

TD
Thanks Aaron, always fun to try new things.

WN,
exfactor has definitely proven to be such a valuable addition to S.W.A.T with all his diverse SKILLZ, loved the clammin' report Gents. Exfactor has always mentioned clam chowder and once I started viewing the pixs that was the first thing I thought of, WTG exfactor. WN you looked like you had a blast with your clammin' adventure, cool to mix it up, sweet post indeed. Definitely a big thanks for this one of a kind post :Thumbs Up:. WNPug trying to poach some clams, haha! Yeah you gotta watch out for those poachers, like one time when I was surf fishing and my spot got poached when I was re-tying my line, ohhhh! wait! my bad! that was you...:Big Smile::ROFL:
Thanks for the great post Arthur!

NG
:Envious:
Mikey is definitely an asset to the Brotherhood. :Big Grin: So skillful and generous with sharing his knowledge. Hope you're taking advantage of being stuck back here in So. Cal and getting some fishing time in NG... I've been out of town for a few days and can't wait to get back into the surf again. S.W.A.T. will hit the sand again this weekend.
