View Full Version : My Fishing Pics Through the Years

I put this together last year and I must have forgot to post it...but anyways, here is a sort-of "fish resume", composed of pictures and stories from when I first started. I wish I took more pictures when I was younger, as there are some fish I caught that would have been great for pictures. I guess the now is better than never to start capturing memories on candid camera. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this.

I’ve been fishing in the salt for the last 12 years, and I love it. A lot of old pictures were lost on my dad’s laptop a long time ago, but I was able to recover some of them and converted them from a Bitmap image to a Jpeg image. Most of these pics are from 2004 to the present. I also have quite a few stories to share behind the pics.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/FirstYellowtail-2.jpg
This is a picture of my first real fish, a 15 pound yellowtail. My dad used to fish the Malibu Pier as a kid and catch bonito, but when he got back into fishing, he fished with his friend from work on his friend’s boat out of Oceanside. They would fish bass and stuff on the beach, but they loved to go paddy hopping. This pic was taken around 1998, around the last El Nino.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/pict00111.jpg
This pic was taken in the summer of 2004. That was the last summer where sand bass and barracuda fishing were CONSISTENT. That was an awesome summer, with the barracuda starting to show in May, and the bass and barracuda coming in around the middle of June, and staying through July. Then, we had excellent calico bass fishing in August with a showing of yellows. This pic was taken on a twilight trip on the Clemente out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing. We were not even a mile outside the harbor, and we got limits of barracuda for 40 people. I also took jackpot. All of mine were caught on bait (I didn’t fish the iron yet). Next to me is our friend Junior, another regular down there who was a lot of fun to fish with.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/pict00131.jpg
This is a pic of the crew on the same trip. On the left is Jiro, a really great deckhand. On the right, is Capt. Kenny. Every time my dad and I fished with Kenny, he put us on the fish. Hands down THE BEST twilight captain I have ever fished with. Once, a group of us regulars were put on an overload trip on the San Mateo with Kenny at the helm, and he took us north to fish the kelp off the point, and we had limit style calico bass fishing. Photo on the Clemente.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmyGaribaldi.jpg
My first Garibaldi, which was safely released. CPR’d on the Clemente.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmySheephead5-1.jpg
This pic was a few days from New Year’s 2005. This sheephead was caught in about 200 feet of water, weighing in at about 4-1/2 pounds. Caught on the Clemente.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmyGiantSquid1-1.jpg
This pic is from January 2005. We went up off of Main Beach at Laguna, and each of us caught about five of these 20 to 30 pound squid. It was quite a thrill for me catching these for the first time. Caught on the Sum Fun.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/PicaReds.jpg
A couple nice reds from Winter 2005. Captain Chris Pica (left) was another great captain down there, always putting us on the fish. Caught on the Sum Fun.
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmyReds1.jpg
More Sum Fun reds.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmyFishPile1-1.jpg
In the winter, we would usually rockfish until about noon or 1pm, and then head into the beach to try and catch a bass. We did pretty well on these trips. That seven pound halibut was caught on plastic on the first cast while fishing the kelp. Caught on the Sum Fun.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmyHalibut1.jpg
Another pic of the halibut.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmySheephead6-1.jpg
Capt. Brian Woolley on the Sum Fun put us over a hard bottom spot where we caught several big sheephead to 10 pounds, all on plastic. However, that was the year where they didn’t open up until April 15, so; unfortunately, we had to release them all. I’ve never seen them bite the plastic so willingly since or before.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmyFishPile2.jpg
A typical spring catch for me aboard the Fury at Catalina. We would usually fish rockfish first thing to get some good taco meat in the sacks, and then head in to the beach, where I would get close to, if not, limits of bass on the fly line.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/PicaSandBass1-2.jpg
Once again, Captain Chris Pica on the Sum Fun put us over a good hard bottom spot where we caught several nice bass. My dad and I were fishing plastic grubs tipped with squid, and we had to drag the bottom, and when there would be the slightest bit of weight, we would set the hook, and fish on!

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmySole1.jpg
A nice sole caught on the Dana Pride. The Dana Pride, while not my favorite boat of design, had an excellent crew. I’ve been on this boat before with 100 people yellowtail fishing, and managing to get through the gauntlet of lines to land a nice yellow. What kept us coming back on this boat was definitely the phenomenal crew.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmyBarracuda1-1.jpg
Nice barracuda caught on the Dana Pride. This was the summer when we had the red tide really bad, but when it would clear up for a while, we had a pick on the bass and barracuda out in the mud.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmySheephead1-3.jpg
My personal best sheephead, caught on the Sum Fun with pismo clams. This one weighed in at 5-1/2 pounds, taking jackpot for the day.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmySheephead7-1.jpg
A pic from the same trip on the Sum Fun. The sheephead were really biting that day, and I managed to get a few nice ones, all on pismo clam. My friends would get a 30 pound bucket of pismo clams at the beginning of the year, put them in Ziploc bags, and give us some, which we would put to use when sheephead came in season. We really had a lot of fun fishing the shallow spots along the coast for sheephead.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/jimmyperch.jpg
Okay…this was one weird experience, but on a February day in 2006, I managed to win jackpot with this 2 pound blue perch, beating out all the barely legal bass and we weren’t even at the island! I guess sometimes it pays off fishing for perch!

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/Triggerfish.jpg
My first triggerfish caught on the Clemente in the pouring rain on 8 pound test.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/pict04.jpg
Another spring catch for me aboard the Fury. We really enjoyed fishing this boat in the spring, when we had light loads going to the island. Once, we went over to the island with seven anglers, and everyone knew each other.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/fury1.jpg
A haul for me on an April 2006 overnight to SCI. Captain Rick Doesburg on the Fury put us over a quick spot of nice reds, and I managed to get three nice ones. Ricky runs a really great operation on that boat, and I enjoyed fishing with him for many years.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/bassPict2.jpg
Dana Wharf’s first twilight of 2006. I got this jackpot winning bass on the pismo clam.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/jimmyyellowfintuna.jpg
The yellowfin came in within all day range of Dana Point for a while in October 2006. I got this one on the troll.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/Squid1.jpg
The squid came back in March 2007 for a while, and I got this one on a two pound squid jig with 80# Dacron...hooked all the way at the bottom while fishing 360 feet.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/SpottedBayBass2.jpg
Sometimes, I would fish on the docks down there at the wharf. In fact, my friend and I had this one little rockpile that would just GO OFF sometimes. We caught a whole bunch of bass, perch, smelt, croaker, and even the occasional short seabass. We released EVERYTHING. One time, I fished that spot, and dumped something nice. I came back the next day, and hooked another nice fish, and it had my hook in its mouth from the day before.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/Spotfin2.jpg
This spotfin was obviously very ill when I caught it before the twilight boat left. It was a nice one too. I enjoyed fishing this harbor, catching all things from perch to short seabass. I even caught a lobster one time. Everything I caught was released safely in the harbor. In August when we would have anchovies for bait, the Dana Point Bait Barge would go WFO. Most of what we caught over there were nice fighting yellowfin croaker, but we would also catch short barracuda, spotties, and even a short halibut.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/jimmyopaleye.jpg
A nice opaleye caught at Catalina Island.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/firstalbacore.jpg
My first albacore caught on the Sea Horse with Captain Tyler Elzig at the helm. Tyler is a great captain, and works hard to find the pelagics, whether he’s at the island or offshore.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/jimmyalbacore2.jpg
A pic of my haul from the same trip. We managed to get about 30 albies for 25 guys. We had four good stops, and I got a fish on all of them. My friend lent me some fluorocarbon to use, and it really paid off. However, he was using the same fluoro, and he didn’t get any. I got all my albies on 25# fluorocarbon with 25# P-Line.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/jPict23.jpg
A kelp paddy yellow streaming for the bow. It was pretty rough that day but I ended up with that 12 pound yellow and a nice albacore to boot.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/jpict27.jpg
A jumbo albacore caught on the Sea Horse on a 1-1/2 day trip. It was rougher than hell all day long, but Tyler worked hard to find the fish, and we had a ripper at about 6pm for about 20 albies. My dad was also on this trip. He had a cracked rib, but he wanted to go on the trip. He threw in three baits the whole day, and on the last bait, he hooked and landed the jackpot winning albacore.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmyHalibut.jpg
My 18 pound halibut caught on the Dana Pride in August 2007. This was caught on anchor, on my favorite spot to fish halibut down there.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/jimmymako2.jpg
My friends and I did a shark trip, and I caught one of the three makos that night, which we estimated to be about 100 pounds. Captain Corey Lieser of the Clemente is at the left.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/JimmySheephead12-19-07.jpg
A nice jackpot winning sheephead caught using mussels on the Clemente.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/007-31.jpg
A nice lingcod caught on the Lucanus Jig, caught and released on the Sea Horse with Captain Tyler Elzig at the helm.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/017-9.jpg
A couple of fish on a stormy day in Dana Point.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/Pict0004.jpg
A nice twilight sand bass caught in August 2008. That summer was awesome on the twilights. We had a little stone just south of the harbor that we would fish and do excellent on. We also had stellar calico bass fishing north of the harbor.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/Jim0010.jpg
My jackpot winning barracuda on a Dana Pride morning ½ day trip. That month was weird – we had a good pick on barracuda and bonito along the kelp in the morning, and then conditions would go to hell and nothing would bite in the afternoon. To the right is George, the phenomenal cook/deckhand on the Dana Pride. Not only were his cooking skills and filleting skills top notch, but he was an all around nice guy and very kid-friendly.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/093-5.jpg
My 35 pound yellowtail caught on the Sea Horse on an August 2008 overnight trip.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/098-1.jpg
My nice dorado from the same trip.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/014-14.jpg
My 10# kelp paddy yellow on the Dana Pride. Fishing was pretty brutal that day, and I got the only bait fish of the day. We iced it down after I caught it, and we had some pretty good sashimi out of the collar.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/dp7.jpg
Nice treefish caught on the Dana Pride.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/002-51.jpg
My jackpot winning sheephead caught on the Clemente.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/jimmysandbass-3.jpg
By this time, my dad and I started fishing the Spitfire out of Redondo regularly. Here’s my 5.5 pound sand bass caught while structure sand bass fishing. Morgon gaffed it right in the jugular vein, and it bled quite a bit. My dad lost a nice fish earlier, and it had his lure in its mouth.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/005-52.jpg
My 4# triggerfish caught on the Spitfire.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/003-53.jpg
My jumbo Boccaccio caught on the Spitfire.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/BigCalico21-2.jpg
My estimated nine pound calico bass caught and RELEASED on the Tradition at Catalina Island. The current was running pretty good uphill, and some hog calicos were rolling on the inside. In addition, I caught and released several nice bass in the three to four pound range.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/010-24.jpg
My 30 pound halibut caught on the Tradition last August.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/003-54.jpg
My nice Catalina Chuckleheads. The one on the left weighed four pounds, with the one on the right weighing about 3-1/2 pounds.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/Jackpot-Jimmy/004-40.jpg
Nice structure sand bass. Both of them weighed about four pounds.

Jimmy,

Not a bad resume! You look so young in the pics wearing the life vest! Either my math is off or you should still be required to wear a vest by law! LOL!

All kidding aside some great "Blast from the Past" Pics. And some extremely informative posts and videos along the way! Way to "Pay it Forward"

I think John Haas owned it. John's a great guy, I got to meet and fish with him when I was little, he ran the Helena out of Dana Wharf while it was the 3/4 day relief boat in the winters. He always found the fish. Nowadays Rick Doesburg owns/operates it and the boat is still fishy and well kept, with a great crew to boot. Used to fish 5 to 5 trips on that boat all the time, now only a few times a year for me plus the occasional overnight or two day trip.
