New laws will affect So Cal warm water fishing spots.
May 4 2010 Tough new rules imposed by the State Water Board Tuesday would force 19 coastal power plants to begin phasing out their reliance on ocean-water cooling systems — raising the specter of giant towers erected along I-5 to cool the San Onofre nuclear plant.
San Onofre and the other plants, including the AES plant in Huntington Beach, were given deadlines to make technological updates to their cooling system by the Water Board, which voted to approve the new rules late Tuesday. The deadlines are years away — for San Onofre, it’s 2022.

These new laws require AES Redondo to stop using ocean water for cooling by 2020.
Their current contract runs out in 2018.

Many of these plants will go with Cooling Towers to Comply with new laws.

Joe Geever, the regional director of the Surfrider Foundation, which has been fighting for years to modernize power plants on the California coast and to stop Poseidon’s plans to build virtually identical desalination plants in Huntington Beach and Carlsbad, was delighted at the possibility that AES would upgrade its plants.
