1/21-1/23

I received a few PM's from Murrieta Angler (robert) and we decided to meet up for a 1.5 day trip on the Legend out of Seaforth. Coincidentally, a week before the trip - i ran into another fellow FNN member (Nick Lam) at a house party and i told him to join us and he did.

I cut out of work a little early on Friday and got to Seaforth at around 5pm. Then when the sun went down, Nick showed up with his buddy Tim. We boarded the boat around 7:30 and I was wondering if Robert was gonna flake. We stowed our gear on our bunks and when i came back up on deck, Murrieta Angler finally showed up.

left to right: Me, Robert, Tim and Nick.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02435.jpg

The boat had picked up a bountiful supply of assorted sized sardines and small Macs.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02436.jpg

We departed and gathered in the galley for the captains safety speech. You can tell by Robert's facial expression... "you're preaching to the choir - captain."

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02440.jpg

The crew of the Legend is very nice and VERY helpful in getting tangles out and general knowledge overall. There's just 1 thing that kinda irk'd me. It's looked down upon if you use anything other than 2 hooks and a weight on your rig. The captian was very adimate about that. No rock cod rigs, no butterfly jigs, no lucanis jigs were seen throughout the day. I don't know... i mean, if you pay all this money to go on an overnight trip, i think you should be able to try out whatever bait/technique you want as long as you're not tangling up the whole boat.

moving right along...

We also had 2 special guests on board. Bob - prostaffer from Berkely/Penn who raffled of some cool gear (including a Baja Special 4/0) and also Ernie from 976=TUNA who took pics all day long.

Then i turned in early at around 9pm so i would have strength to stand up and fish all of Saturday. 6:45am we all wake up...
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02442.jpg

I went out on deck and it was pretty foggy in the morning. Oh and thank God i put on my patch for this trip cuz it was...

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02446.jpg

7:15am - had our breakfast plates and breakfast burritos that Gery-Sue made for us. Here's a picture of Murrieta Angler taking a picture of his breakfast.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02453.jpg

And after breakfast, we did our last minute gear changes (the ones that you lay awake on your bunk the night before and question yourself about...)

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02449.jpg

At around 7:35 - the boat started slowing down and we finally reached Colonet. All of us were on deck and waiting for the boat to completely shut off so we can drop.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02454.jpg

We fished from 250-350 feet all day.

On my first drop, i put a pony sized sardine on the bottom and a full squid on top. 12oz torpedo dropper loop setup. Right when it hit bottom - my rod tip loaded up and then bounced up and down for joy. My first fish of the day which was also the first lingcod on the boat.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02455.jpg

And the guy immediately to my left caught this bohemoth red.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02456.jpg

by the by, all the rockfish today were QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY fish as you will see in the rest of the report.
We swung off the rock and so we reset and dropped again. And again - my squid this time got CLOBBERED and this time Nick was to my left so we both pulled up these beauties...

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02458.jpg

Then Robert, quietly on the Starboard side hooked into his bounty.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02462.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02461.jpg

Since there was no killbox on the stern, the floor of the boat quickly became littered with these huge rockfish.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02463.jpg

15 minutes later, on another drift, Nick and i both hook up again right next to each other and what do you know?
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02460.jpg

Using the double squid now, i dropped down and like a vaccuum, something INHALED my bait -- so i wind wind wind and it's giving head shakes like mad - different than a lingcod - almost like a big Mackeral. When it finally came to color, up came this nice sized whitefish.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02467.jpg

We made a few more moves and a few more drifts over rocks, pinnicals and ledges.

Photo op - between moves...
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02468.jpg

This is how the whole morning went. Drop - fish - drop - fish - drop - fish... then i got hungry and Gery-Sue made me a swiss Cheeseburger.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02471.jpg

While i was eating my burger in the galley, i noticed some commotion - it was Robert!! He was grinding on the rail and then he lifted his stick up and it went BENDO!!! All eyes were fixed on him.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02472.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02474.jpg

Wow that was exciting... when it came 10 feet from the surface to color, it fell off the hook. When i asked him what it was, he said "it was a HUGE rockfish (without the fish)".

okay so, after lunch - it was time to get back in the water...
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02469.jpg

More nice reds coming over the rail.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02464.jpg

This next one was probably my PB (or close to it) Red at around 6-7 pounds. Boy did he put up a fight all the way to the top.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02465.jpg

And then Tim, out of nowhere puts all of our reds to shame with this MONSTER RED!!!
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02483.jpg

Then Nick hooks up on his light tackle setup and brings up a dinosaur.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02493.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02485.jpg

A few minutes later, somebody tailwrapped a 5 foot Nurse Shark. It was promptly but away though...
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02477.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02478.jpg

More fish littered on deck...
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02496.jpg

Random starry eye caught on skwid.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02494.jpg

The day was coming to a close and the wind picked up just a tad (8 knots) and so the boat was drifting faster and faster. The fish became really finecky towards the end of the day. My final fish of the day was this Gigantic Bocaccio caught on a double sardine dropper loop in about 300 feet. It came up with it's mouth open as the boat was moving forward so i had to crank faster than usual. Thing was as big as my whole torso.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02497.jpg

We called it a day when the sun touched the horizon on the west and Gery Sue whipped up a batch of her famous Spaghetti and garlic toast dinner.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02498.jpg

Bob from Berkley/Penn approves of his dinner.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/DSC02501.jpg

After dinner, Bob picked 2 lucky winners out of the raffle. 1 guy won a pole... i didn't bother to look what kind becuz i obviously didn't win it. And a Baja special 4/0 reel ... which i also did not win.

After the raffle, the crew laid out all the fish on deck and separated them by numbers. By this time i was too cold and tired to take anymore pics... i think Robert and Nick have more pics to add. And also you can check the 976-TUNA website for more pictures of this trip.

Another phenomenal piece of fishing shared to the viewers! Still looked like a successful trip for it being in the middle of the winter. Sorry Aaron wasn't driving. He probably would have let everyone use whatever they wanted. Maybe the captain was afraid of massive tangles or whatever. How did you like the bunks? Sure looked crowded in your pictures.

Thanks Pete - We sure did have another epic coddage session. I've seen fish of that quality before but NEVER coming over so consistently. I mean 6-10 pounders all day long. I'm still looking forward for our bass slaying session that we were talking about. Let me know when you're ready. fishing 40# when you're 300ft deep is a good workout and all but i'd much rather set hooks on bass.

Gracias Coach - it was a sucess for most of us. I think a handful of guys were having a tough time getting bit. You know how that works... just - wrong place at the wrong time - type of thing. I didn't get the name of the captian though - i know the deck's names were Jordan, Andy and Mike - good help from the crew.

The bunks on the legend... not the worst accommodations i've slept in but... the dividers between the bunks in the middle of the boat are only about 4 inches high so i was playing footsy with Tim all night. As far as the boat load.. 30 people on the legend is manageable. When we did drifts on 1 side of the boat, yeah, there'd be a few tangles but like i said - the crew would have us out in under a minute.

Thanks for reading Step child - Both of them were using custom built Phoenix rods and... what looked like bait casting reels. They caught both of their big fish on what we called "the low pro" setup. It was this plastic tube with a clip for your weight ... it's hard to explain.. i'll have nick answer this part. But we called it "the low pro" setup because, again, the cap and crew might have given us a hard time about it.

And regarding my zipper being down - i had put my very own special "scent" on my squids before every drop - that's why i caught so much.

The Legend didn't take a shot at yellowtail on the high spots? I was on the Endeavor this past weekend and Sueno (Cap'n David Ikeda) thought to give the Colnett a visit in case some yellows were active after last week's warm spell. The boat got three around 25# and a few may have busted off after grabbing bait on a ganion. After that, we went off to the rockfish spots and your photos could have been our photos, everything looked about the same fish-wise.

Yeah fuj, I noticed when I got home - I checked the seaforth reports and saw 4 boats went out on 1.5 day trips and the endeavor managed to land 3 YT's. We were both at colonet but circumfrentially, I didn't see another boat as far as the eyes could see.

Dude, it was good to finally to meet you Bro. I had a great time with you, Tim & Nick.
There will definitely be more trips planned this summer with you guys!!!
Although I got tangled up, too many times, I still managed to pull up a few good sized fish.
Special squid sauce?!? Ancient Asian Secret???
Don't forget the overnighter in March.....you just can't beat $89...:Secret:

Nick, it was a pleasure fishing and talking with you. Whenever you're ready to hit the surf, just shoot me a PM and I will do the same...:Big Grin:

Tim, you are a cool young man with your head pointed in the right direction.
Get that degree from LMU ( & a few digits from some of those good looking young ladies you were talking about) and there will be plenty of time for fishing...:Envious:

I didn't take a whole lot of pictures, since you had your camera out on "Q" every time, but here are a few more...,

Waiting for the go ahead from the Captain, Wake up K3v!!

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG! Those fish tacos look bomb! I wasn't sleeping - I was praying. And although the triple hookup never happened the water started getting choppy due to the wind at that point and I was down to my last weight (6oz) and I don't even think I hit bottom.

Tim - what girls??? Why wasn't I told about these college girls???

Well rob, all in all, it was a successful trip. Now I know what works and what doesn't... (note to self: bring my lucky charm... don't wear my lucky charm) cuz I was on FIRE in the morning but as soon as I put it on - my stick pointed straight ahead until I quietly took it off.

Hmmm from the looks of it the Skipper knew what he was talking about! Excellent catch although I know what you mean about trying what you want to try when your paying, but they just want whats gonna produce the best for the majority.

No doubt! At first we were kinda scratching our heads and looking around but - at the end of the day, when we took home bags and bags of filets - perhaps it wasn't such a bad idea after all - and let me be clear when i say the whole Legend trip was utterly friggin' awesome.

hey DR

I fish here n there, mostly the trout stuff. I posted a SARL report couple days ago, but everyone knows what 2lb trout look like so there were no pics.
I go after the DFG trout plants, but then if I report after a stocking the locals get up lol
Cant wait for the water to warm and the feesh to come in!

Hey Kevin, Ever thought about hitting up some shore fishing action after work ?
What city do you work in ? What time do you get off.
Take your kids to KH on the weekend and check out the Bonito swimming at the short pier.

Are there Bones in King Harbor RIGHT NOW?

Yes, but catching them is a different story.
Do you have any skills ? Then you got a chance ?
It is not some easy Bonito fishing like Kevin does at Catalina
I am wondering if Kevin has the skills needed ? :Envious: Some guys are better off fishing only when it is good, on a boat, with live bait.

Talk about a challange
Only 1 FNNer has posted a Bonito (besides myself)
Been useing a 1980's UGLY stick and a $29 Daiwa to give myself a handycap

Of course, I know exactly what it takes to catch those little rockets...a long list of detailed details involved...

Nope, I've never shore fished before. I work in irvine and I've heard the huntington has some great shore fishing spots. I getoff of work at 5pm and it gets dark at 6 (does the shore bite at night???).
I've tried to take my daughters out fishing on a number of occassions but they simply just don't like it. The baiting, the smell, the boat rolling, the cold and when I take em to redondo pier, they usually lose interest due to that damm guy who sells those pinwheels and buttons that light up.

As for me having the skillz to catch a kh bone? Probably not. I don't think I have the patience or the knowledge to kno where to begin. I'm just an average fisherman =)

I know ambassadorhawg FOR A FACT can take everybody and their moms to school at any fishing though. I've seen it with my own slanted eyes.
