The three big species of the lake are biting right now and conditions are getting better by the day. Trout , Catfish and Bass where all biting at a pretty good clip this past week for anglers hoping to ring in the new year or top off on a spectacular 2010!
Trout fishing continues to get better as anglers adjust to the dingy water color that is starting to mellow out. Anglers fishing short leaders with White Gulp Dough or Powerbait, Chrt Powerbait, Garlic Powerbait and nightcrawlers are scoring some nice fish. Anglers that have been fishing the float and nightcrawler have been whacking the fish as well. Jack Reiley of HB, Cody Herckt of Orangee, and Patrick Freidman (Phil Freidman of radio fame's son) fished the main lake with garlic powerbait and minijigs to whack this 9 fish kids limit!

Ethan Grainger of Ladera Ranch caught this 4.2 rainbow while bait fishing with Salmon Egg Red Powerbait with Gulp Garlic Spray.

Keith Smith of San Clemente Trolled up this 5.8 Rainbow Trout at the West Shore. Keith was trolling a spinner harness with his nightcrawler.

With all the run off the Channel Catfish have been on the chew lately. Virtually anywhere water comes into the lake is holding Catfish right now as the feed heavily on anything that washes into the lake. Guys are getting them on Powerbait even trolling has taken some hefty Cats.
Pictured here is non other than "The Man, The Myth, The Legend" Magic Man Mitz Onizuka of Irvine with his 5.12 Channel Catfish taken from the Flats on Mackral. Daniela had to ham it up with the legend!

Bass anglers have been finding the fish also up in the shallows exploring new structure that has not been in the water for a long time or lurking in the 30-40ft mark. The shallower fish have been much more aggresive and can be caught using crankbaits and jigs. While the deeper fish have been eating a dropshot, shakey headed or even a darter head plastic worm. Watch for this bite to explode in a couple of weeks!

Hope everyone had a safe and insane new year! Hope everyone gets there new years wish of a big fish whether it be your PB Trout, Catfish, Bass, Crappie, Bluegill, Carp, or Wiper at the Vine.
