How do you match a good reel to your rod. Is it trial and error or is their a way to find the perfect combo?

always take your rod with you, and put the reel on it . see how it balances .on spinning .hold the rod were you normally would, and open your fingers.if the rod falls forward you need to go up to the next size reel.like if a 500 is to light try going to the 1000 ,or 1500.until the rod stays evenly balanced.if the reel is to heavy the rod will lift up.when i buy a fly reel i always try the reel seris in differant sizes till it balances out.
