Lake Mission Viejo 12/27/2010:

The good news is we are boat owners now. No more $5.00 per hour boat rental and being on the 4-Hour Watch is what we like to call it. My brother bought a used boat on Sunday listed on the boats for sale bulletin board. My neighbor Dan was fishing the shore section on Sunday and looked at the ads. It didn't take long before he noticed a great deal and called us about it. We met the boat owner at the lake later on. He doesn't want the boat anymore as he is into desert motorcycle riding now.

Boat:

Boat Specs:
Boat manufacturer is Sears.
Almost 15 feet in length.
It seats 4 people for fishing but 3 is better.
It came with: A brand new 4 speed electric motor (used once), 2 anchors (10# and 15#) with rope, 3 chairs, and 2 soft padded seats.
We’ll use the upside storage rack space.
Also the lake registration is good for all of next year.
How much for all of this? $500.00.
How much do we normally spend on each boat rental outing? $25.00 - $35.00 (2-3 times per month).
How much for the monthly rental space? $28.00.

We were given permission by upper lake staff to test the boat out on Monday despite not having the $300,000 liability insurance yet. They normally don’t do that. Why did they let us use the boat? They said they like me/us and mentioned to just keep safety in mind as we are out on the lake. Awesome!! I guess when you’re not going around and punching people in the face you get extra lake privileges.

On Monday, my neighbor Dan who is on vacation, my younger brother Steven and myself went fishing. Dan wanted to only fish buoy F and we said NO. You're not driving or captain of this boat. We never even went over there. I can sum up this fishing report up in 2 words; “we slaughtered” them but it won’t happen because ya keep on reading. No cheating and looking at pictures only. Get off the porn for once!! These words below might teach you something or give ya the urge to get your *** out fishing!

Spot #1:

Corner of the north swimbeach with the big pink house. I don't prefer fishing this spot because it's in clear view of the lifeguard tower. An 11lb Nebraska was caught there on Friday. The picture of the fish will be posted on the LMV website. Dan wanted to try here first and he doesn't get it at all. The fish are up on the beach and you can't cast up in there. We had no bites or anything after a 1/2 hour and made a move. A few weeks ago guys were catching fish right there.

Spot #2:
I saw a small school of fish last week in one area but they spook very easily. They play chicken and swim away underneath boats and docks. Last week my brother and me pulled 2 fish off of this spot. I missed my only fish here. Today we caught 3 fish right off the start. My first fish swam towards the boat and I missed it jigging a powermouse. My 2nd cast landed the first fish in the boat. My brother Steven tossed an inflated crawler and was bit within minutes. He landed a 4 1/2lb trout. Dan tossed a green pea and landed his first fish.

Baits used:
Steven: 2lb line, inflated nightcrawler, Mustad #6 baitholder hook, and a med size split shot.
David: 4lb line, Owner #8 mosquito hook, med split shot, Berkley white poweregg and an orange Berkley powerworm.
Dan: 4lb line, 1/8oz bullet weight, small barrel swivel, and Berkley Gulp green Salmon Eggs (red/white lid label). He calls them “green peas”. This is what Dan uses all the time and really nothing else other than powerbait. He is so very versatile! Not!

Result is these fish have full tails:

My younger brother Steven first fish was a 4 ½lb kicker. It was the biggest fish between the 3 of us.

Spot #3: Went to the deep water on the outside of Market Cove for no bites and no fish.
Spot #4: Fished outside of the small swimbeach past Market Cove for no bites or fish. It was loaded with fish last week but you can’t cast into any lake swimbeach. It’s legal to cast 15 feet away from them but why take the chance and get caught.

Spot #5:
Went to the dam area to check it out. Within a couple of minutes my rod tip gives and I land my 2nd trout. Cool! Caught it on an inflated crawler.

Spot #6: Sometime in the late afternoon.
After catching the only fish, we didn’t get bit in a while so they wanted to move. I made a mental note and said just follow the fish. Go out to deeper water. I made a long cast with the powermouse (white poweregg, orange worm) and let it go all the way down. I loosened the drag, set the rod/reel down, turn my head, and all you hear is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!! I feel heavy weight and it comes off. On the next cast I get my 3rd fish within minutes and it comes off at the boat. For the rest of the day it was none stop action on the powermouse. They wouldn’t leave it alone. The only problem was I missed 10+ fish and 5 of them anchor wrapped me. The hook was a little bent so why not use it rather than a new hook. It’s not a tournament day so I can get away with it.

These fish are so strong that as soon as they feel the hook they immediately run for cover around the anchor ropes. Only 1 fish broke me off on the anchor rope as I tried to get around my brother on a double hook-up. It looked like a 3lb fish too. At this last spot we caught fish on everything and literally slaughtered them. I caught a couple of panfish on inflated crawlers and my biggest trout on an inflated crawler. The trout were all really good size with broad shoulders on them. They fought like a freight train and pulling them up from 50-60 feet of water was a challenge. It was a lot of fun despite pulling the anchor up twice in order to net 2 of my fish. To understand how these Nebraska Trout fight you need to catch one!!

Took a pic of this osprey picking up a panfish at Lake Mission Viejo on Monday. This osprey was on the other side of the lake in the trees. How far? Nearly a ½ mile away. It spotted the panfish floating on the lake surface with its laser eye vision. Just incredible!

The osprey is off to eat a protein filled meal.

Steven caught and released this largemouth bass on an inflated crawler.

Our 4 fish limit weights:
Dan: 8lbs
David: 10lbs
Steven: 11 1/2lbs

Next stocking date: Wednesday December 29, 2010 with 4,500lbs of Nebraska.

Lake Mission Viejo water visibility is at 30 feet and very clear. Many lakes will need some time to clear up from these recent storms. LMV will be open on Saturday January 1st at 6:00am.

Have a good one! Go out and catch some fish.

Nice job on the trout, and congratulations on the boat. It's a great deal!
One question - where did you get the liability insurance from? I should get my 12' Portabote registered for lake use.
