Winter fishing Castaic tips and tricks.

My girlfriend and I have gone to Castaic a couple of times and never had good success there. We're not too particular in what we catch we just want to have a fun time. Any tips on bass or striper this time of year?
Also any good books or info on bass or striper in general? I've fished mostly trout and saltwater my whole life.
