Well, last week out at the Shoe, we were catching the Cuda left and right just like everyone else. Then off to the side of the boat we saw something floating there. Thinking it was a shark sunning itself, we kept a close eye on it. As it drifted closer we saw that it was a sun fish just hanging out between the fishing boats. My dad gets a "great" idea of trying to catch it, so he quickly puts a lure on a pole and tries to get it interested. Of course, it couldnt care less, so he casts the plastic right on top of the fish and hooks it in the fin, and the fight begins.

My dad, thinking this is a great idea...

My dad, about fifteen minutes later. Im not sure which one will tire first

Finally, the fish comes into view

Up to the surface, then let it go

That was probably one of the longest, most pointless fights I have ever seen. After reading a little here, i find out its a bad luck fish, but I guess we didnt do anything too bad because we got home with fish and safety. Good thing is, my dad got really tired which meant more fish for me while he sits back and lets his poles and arms rest, and we let the fish go with no harm done except for a small hook hole on his back fin. Then went back to the Cuda fest!

Hey this woulda made a great report for the Saltwater section, but just out of curiosity. When you say your dad basically purposely snagged the fin of the fish...Isn't snagging a saltwater fish illegal? Like..highly illegal? Just wondering if you knew that or if it's no big thing

I'm not really a saltwater guy so I don't know whats up.

I have no idea, I sure hope not. Thank god it was released no problem.

Not much challenge when the fish doesn't take the hook voluntarily.

Might as well try spearfishing, or go bowfishing for carp.

I'd check the regs., wouldn't want to unknowingly break the regs.

snagging in salt water is legal.

Then it's not angling.

Definition from DFG 2007 Ocean Regulations:

1.05. Angling. To take fish by hook and line with the line held in the hand, or with the line attached to a pole or rod held in the hand or closely attended in such manner that the fish voluntarily takes the bait or lure in its mouth.
