Hey guys,

Considering it rained all night last night in HB, the last thing I thought I was going to do today was fish. But a friend of mine called me up and said he’d pay for my pass and gas if we went, so he met me at my place, and we were off to the lake at around 10 am.

Got to the lake, and was very surprised to see as many people as there were. Went and got our passes, and headed to the spot.

Today we started out South of the office. I had one rod rigged with 2 lb test, Carolina rigged power mouse, and the other 4 lb test, Carolina rigged, power bait.

It took awhile, but I finally got picked up on the power mouse. Gave it some line, rod loaded up, I set the hook, and missed the fish. Brought it up, rebaited, and cast back out. A short time later, Got picked up again on the power mouse, rod loaded up, I set the hook. This time it stuck, and a short time later, I brought a nice Utah to the net. Skunk was off, so now I can relax a little.

FIRST TROUT…SKUNK BEATER!

To make a lonnnnngggggg story short, for the next two hours, I missed approximately 10-12 fish, all the same. Get bit hard, give line, load up, set the hook, and no hook set. Well, I was starting to get frustrated like I did yesterday at LNL. I have missed more fish the last 3 trips to LNL then I have in LITERALLY 5 years of trout fishing…I mean total misses.

I heard the guys further south of me fishing mention that they were using Nightcralwers, so I went to the office and picked up a tub. Arrived back at the shore, cast out my Power Mouse rod first, then inflated a nightcrawler and dipped it in BITES ON! garlic, and made a cast. Not 2 minutes later, my bobber flies off the line, and I see a nice hookjaw making a couple jumps out in front of me. I knew this fish was on my bait. Put reel in gear, set the hook, and the fish was ON! It continued to do aerials, and after about the 6th jump, yes, you guessed it, it spit the hook! GRRRRRR!!!

A short time later, a couple guys set up next to me, closer towards office. Within about 30 minutes of their arrival, they missed a total of about 8 fish, so I didn’t feel so bad.

I looked at my cell and saw that it was about 130, and I knew I had to go. I was a bit disappointed with only having landed one fish, so I decided to get my gear ready, including one rod. I left the other nightcrawler rod out, with 2 lb test. Then, it happened! My bobber gets shot off the line about 10 feet in the air, and I saw another hookjaw doing ariels out in front of me again. I knew this was my final shot, so after I set the hook, the fish was ON! This was a GREAT FIGHT, especially on 2 lb test! Every time the fish jumped, my heart stopped cuz I was either thinking it was going to spit the hook, or break my line. After a GREAT battle, I finally got the fish up to the net, and landed the fish!

NICE FATTY HOOK JAW TROUT!!!

I knew it was a nicer fish, so I took it up to the office to weigh the fish. Almost 4 lbs of *** kicking hookjaw!! They took my pic, and gave me a pack of LIP RIPPERS mini jigs. I didn’t know that if anyone catches a hookjaw over 3 lbs, they do this. Very nice of them!!!
MY CLOSE TO 4 LB HOOK JAW WITH MY FREE LIP RIPPERZ PRIZE!

MY SLAY TODAY!

So I cleaned the fish, and headed home. Landed 2 fish, missed about 13…..but still a pretty good day for me.

Cool looking hook jaw trout. At least the better fish didn't get away.

Missing fish with the powermouse is common. They eat the poweregg and it slides down the shank of the hook over the barb. This is why the fish get away or jump off.

One way to prevent missing bites of the powermouse is to make a few adjustments:

1. Bite a little bit off the top of the powerworm.
2. If you want to, bend the hook slightly outward so it isn't so close to the powerworm. It opens the hook up a little bit more.
3.Take the #8 mosquito hook and go farther down the powerworm. That way the poweregg has less room to slide down the shank of the hook and cover the barb.
4. Or buy the Berkley Gulp Salmon Eggs (red/white lid label) and use those as the poweregg. The Berkley Gulp Salmon Eggs are smaller, much more durable, and don't tear as easily as the powereggs. Because they are smaller you get more of an exposed hook on the fish. The powereggs tend to rip in half just after a couple of fish.

I found that a #8 Eagle Claw baitholder hook works very well with inflated crawlers. You can cast them farther out and the nightcrawler won't fall off on the cast. Hook the nightcrawler the same way as you hook the powerworm (for a powermouse set up).

Hope this helps on your next outing.

thanks steve!! lol...even tho i know what it looked like..after I saw this...i looked at my fish again..and it made me think...look at the size of its mouth...were all so stuck on using small trebles for those fish...we could probable fish 2/0 circle hooks for them and have no probs hooking them! lol

Awesome fish!!! I like fishing LNL. I use Mr Crappie hooks with a powemouse, they are longer so the hook is lower on the worm than a regular hook. Anyways great job on the hook jaw!!

FISH ON!!!
