HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Given the numerous serious concerns surrounding the process, please send a message to the California Fish and Game Commission urging them to suspend the South Coast MLPA implementation

The public is encouraged to comment on any item on the Commission’s meeting agenda. In order for the Commission to adequately consider public comments, the public is requested to submit written comments no later than ten days prior to the meeting. Written comments received fewer than ten days preceding the meeting will be submitted to the Commission at the meeting; however, Commission staff is unable to deliver material received one day before and on the day of the meeting to the Commissioners when the meeting is not in Sacramento. Please send your comments to be received no later than two days before the meeting.

Interested parties may present oral and/or written comments on proposed regulations in person at Commission meetings, or may submit written comments via e-mail to fgc@fgc.ca.gov, via fax to (916) 653-5040, via mail to California Fish and Game Commission, 1416 Ninth Street, Room 1320, Sacramento, CA 95814. Flood their phones with calls and comments: (916) 653-4899

In addition to sending a message to the Fish and Game Commission prior to the meeting, attending the meeting in person will be critical. Please help and commit to this if at all possible, in whatever way you can!

The Enviros hate us and will pull every dirty trick, just so they can win. We need to finish this fight STRONG! The PSO / UASC / SAC attorneys are coming, with a stern message for the Fish and Game Commission. The state didn't appeal that public records act lawsuit Bob Fletcher won. This thing isn't going to end on Dec 15, even if Julie Packard, Meg Caldwell, the Deal the Bay and Coaststealer people have 3 yes votes in the bag. Come see for yourself.

We need to protect what we've fought for thus far, we need to support the common-sense commissioner Dan Richards, and we need to stand with our fellow watermen and conservationists the free divers. They've stood by us.

Stand up for your way of life; stand up for your sport.

Really surprised no one speaking up here. I've been involved since the inception of the closures back in 2000. Please make a point of speaking out if you can, or there won't be anything to talk about later. When they take it away, it won't come back later. Mikey

DR, I've been to at least half a dozen of these meetings already with Dana. So have Bones (Mike) JerryG, Mikey (Exfactor), BSP (Marc) and many others. You know what I look like, maybe you should have come up and say hello at one of them, "if you were there". We all care, care "A LOT" and pissed as hell too. But some people fight their battles differently and contribute in more subtle ways. Not everybody can pound their chests like you or I. I've already made plans to be there on the 15th. But I didn't feel the need to announce my participation and go out of my way to belittle those who cannot come. Make sure you find me and introduce yourself Martin.

Mikey, I'll see you there!

Public speaking starts at 9:00 am.

At previous meetings the public was given 15 seconds. You could sign up to speak and give or cede your time to someone else. Many Key Speakers need more time to get the critical message out.

ALL FNN NEED TO TAKE THE DAY OFF AND GET THERE EARLY TO GET SIGNED UP AND HAVE TIME TO CEDE THEIR 15 SECONDS TO A KEY SPEAKER.
Some of these guys need 3 to 5 minutes.

WOW! I am really glad someone posted this up. I am a long time lurker on this site and have started to become a little more active in many ways. I wish I could go to this event on the 15th. I really believe that these activist like many are all about the hype, focused on their agenda and nothing more. Maybe it is guilt? I am sure HP has been dumping chemicals everywhere for many years and this is the way they make up for it? I do believe there should be some protections and I cant agree more with that. But to take everything away is stupid. This is going the same way as bevis and butthead. My child burned down the house. Should I blame my self for not keeping an eye on my child and what he/she watches? NOPE I WILL BLAME TV! We have to outlaw TV.
There is one thing I dont agree on. That this will be law for ever. Laws change as long as someone is willing to fight and push forward with them. I wish all the supporters that are going tomorrow the best of luck and hope that your support and push will stop the hype madness.

Despite major controversey the commission approved the closure areas 3-2 today. I got to be interviewed by our local TV station, and got my 15 seconds of glory on the news. The only smile I've gotten from 10+ years of watching this unfold.

Mikey, it was good to seeing you at the meeting and hanging out with you & Steve today. You look good on Channel 3 Santa Barbara.
Got really tired of hearing all the enviros going on and on with their rhetoric.
I got a kick out of hearing one of the "good guys" called them a bunch of wackos. :Big Smile:
Regardless of the vote, it doesn't end here...

Mikey and Arthur,

Glad to be able to attend today with you guys!

Amazing how all of the commission was very attentive to the folks wearing the "I love you" T-shirts spoke and then went to sidebar conversations and suddenly enforced the speaking time constraints on any one who spoke against it.

Not much rebuttal from the commission when the Lawyers went back to back to back and brought out issues about the secret meetings and lack of providing the court ordered FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) that had been requested.

The 3-2 Vote was probably planned all along also! Feel like we just got :Skunk: ?

Steve

P.S. Mike thanks for the great intel on the after meeting location, after our 3 hour chilly sidebar meeting, after the B.S. inside the meeting! :Thumbs Up:

Thanks again Arthur!

MLPA DAD: Son, how'd you like to go throw the baseball?
MLPA SON: Not today Dad, my arm hurts. Why can't we go fishing like other dad's take their kids?
MLPA DAD: Shut up and get your glove.

Sacramento, CA – December 15, 2010 – Despite ongoing legal concerns, the California Fish and Game Commission (FGC) voted 3-2 to approve a wide-ranging array of marine protected areas (MPAs), essentially no-fishing zones, along the southern California coast. In its latest effort to implement the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA), the commission’s vote indefinitely closes approximately 12 percent of southern California’s ocean to recreational fishing – including many of the state’s best recreational fishing areas.

“It’s beyond comprehension that the commission would go through with approving these regulations given the serious flaws in the process,” said Bob Fletcher of the Sportfishing Association of California and former Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Fish and Game. “The commission obviously had no desire to assure that a fair, open, objective and legally conducted process was in place before such a vote occurred. This vote leaves little doubt that the MLPA has is based on political agendas instead of the needs of California’s citizens and natural resources.”

The Partnership for Sustainable Oceans (PSO), which represents recreational fishing and boating interests in California, has been actively engaged in the MLPA process since the North Central Coast phase. The PSO has voiced its concerns regarding the numerous flaws and a lack of transparency in the process. One of the PSO’s members, United Anglers of Southern California (UASC), has retained legal representation to investigate the legality of the MLPA process.

During the December 15, commission meeting, the PSO’s attorneys presented to the commission the numerous examples of defects in the rulemaking process, including many flaws that were discovered after reviewing MLPA planning documents that have only recently become public.

On October 1, 2010, a California Superior Court ruled that two MLPA planning groups – the Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF) and Master Plan Team , also known as the Science Advisory Team, are state agencies and therefore compelled by California’s Public Records Act to share information that they were withholding from public view. These groups would not respond to a Public Records Act request, incorrectly claiming they were not state agencies. In light of a PSO review of the documents provided to date, the commission was presented several notable findings prior to their vote, including evidence that the BRTF held numerous scheduled, agendized meetings which were closed to the public.

Other notable flaws and concerns with the MLPA process that were not taken into consideration by the commission include:

* Lack of funding for the necessary monitoring and enforcement of MPA regulations – a $40 million annual price tag.
* Negative economic impact of closures to saltwater recreational fishing, which contributes $2.3 billion to California’s economy annually and supports nearly 20,000 jobs.
* Major flaws in the environmental analysis of the impacts of the proposed South Coast regulations.
* Inconsistent and shifting guidelines throughout the process.

“The MLPA attempts to resolve a fisheries ‘crisis’ that simply does not exist. As a result of decades of successful traditional fisheries management, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service, there is not one marine fish stock currently experiencing overfishing in California’s waters,” said Gordon Robertson, Vice President of the American Sportfishing Association, a PSO member. “Simply put: fisheries management in California is working and the MPAs are not necessary.”

“While we are deeply disturbed that the commission would go forward with approving these regulations, the process is not over yet,” noted John Riordan, Board Member of UASC. “The PSO legal effort is working to protect the interests of recreational anglers and is making significant progress. I urge all anglers and anyone concerned with the MLPA to visit www.oceanaccessprotectionfund.org (http://www.oceanaccessprotectionfund.org/) and make a donation to help the fight against this flawed process in the courts.”
