I was up at Big Bear on Sunday Dec 5th. Got up there nice and early and there were still a bunch of people that beat me to a couple spots I would have tried first. A good portion of the lake had a thin layer of ice on it in the morning which melted in the am. Picked and alternative which was all to ourselves and set out the rods with PB and within a few minutes started getting bites. The sunrise was pretty sweet. Caught three within the first hour then it started to slow down. My buddy hooked one that came off a few feet from shore. The wind started to pick up so we headed to someplace more sheltered. Turns out that was a good idea cause we caught three more and one was 20 inches. Tried worms as well but only had a couple of hits and nothing stuck. I was using leader length of 14 inches all the way to three feet and catching on everything. It was a good day out on the shore! When I got home to clean the fish one of the fish had a bulging green and orang intestine, so I cut it open and found a large chunk of rainbow powerbait. He must have got away 4-5 times with stealing bait, the picture is below.

are you using worm or power bait for trout? I am going there at the end of the year for 2 nights and never fished up there. What kind of fish do you fish at big bear lake? cast far from shore? I can't see the picture. It was blocked from work.

Thanks

I think I answered all of your questions if you would have read my post, thats what the writing above the pictures is for! I cast near and far and seem to catch them anywhere.

Haha, thats odd, I don't have Canada Mittens, I don't even wear them when its -20 C ice fishing, :-) I can't wait, going home for Christmas and hopefully going to pull some rainbows, northern pike, perch and walleye through the ice!

I want to know where that GIANT holdover in that lake is lurking. I WILL find it.

8lb main line 4lb Berkley Vanish Leader. The big ones seem to break the two pound test too easy.

Copy. I'll be heading up there this weekend, and I was debating on weather to use 6 or 4.
I've never fished Big Bear before, so it will be a bit of trial & error for me. I was planning on using some PB with garlic scent, that seems to work well at the lakes I usually go to.
Are lures productive from shore? Or do you need to be on a boat?
