Stuffed from Thanksgiving Thursday, i made an rsvp on the Freelance out of Davey's for Black Friday. I think this is the one day out of the year where the women are up before the men doing what they love to do the most.
Called up my boy Alan and we met up at the landing around 6:20am.
Deckhand Todd loading up the tanks with scoops of med/large sardines.

After we loaded up the bait, we made the 2 hour trek to the island. I took a nap and tried to keep warm in the galley. Before you knew it i heard the engines power down and went outside to see the Sun shining on the deck and the water flat and calm. I haven't fished Catalina in over a year so i was definitely excited. I forgot how beautiful the island is just to look at.

As soon as we got in close enough, Todd started chumming the water and there were BOILS all over the boat. I started off with 15# p-line - 3/8oz sliding sinker and 2/0 ringed owner hook. I used that all day for my live bait setup. I pinned on a sardine and INSTANT hook up. GOD i love it when you feel a dean swim for it's life and then the tugging action when you press your thumb on the free spool. Put it into gear and SET that sucker!!

After getting my fill of finbait fishing, i switched over to the jig. Using 25# IzorXXX and a Chrome/blue Tady TLC i hucked the jig out and let it sink 3 seconds... reeled it back in. Second cast - let it drop 5 seconds... reeled it back in. Third cast let it sink to the bottom and slow winded back and then got bit.
I don't know which is better, catching with a flylined sardine or catching with the jig - either way, the feeling NEVER gets old.
We made about 5 or 6 stops. With every stop producing bones from the 1 - 4 pound range. Sometimes the dogs would come and scare away everything - then we'd make a move to the next spot. In between moves, i enjoyed taking in the sights.

We even saw a few Bald Eagles but i was eating a cheeseburger that Goofy made me and i was enjoying the burger more than a lame bald eagle. I mean, bald eagles are pretty rare but a CHEESEBURGER from the famous... no the INFAMOUS GOOFY from the FREELANCE??? are you kidding me?
At the end of the day, I managed landing 8 bonito's and a 13 inch Calico. 6 from bait, 2 on the jig. I farmed a few though because some of the sardines were too big. I also 'binked' 2 that were hooked because i started getting lazy instead of following my fish, i'd try to muscle it in.

I'll tell you this much - there's NO sign of the bonito action slowing or stopping right now at Catalina. I had a great time fishing the Freelance. I can't wait until Calico bass fishing starts up again though.
As we headed back home, i caught a glimpse of the island at dusk that was gorgeous.http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/k3vin_kim/latest/8.jpg
***Thanks to Dave from Davey's and the whole Freelance crew for a fun filled day.***
