Hello Newbie here in Southern California,

I have been surf fishing for a few weeks now and really have the itch to do some distance casting for whatever lies past the breakers. I have a ton of different reels I inherited from my grandfather and was wondering if any of these would work well for distance casting. I have been reading this site and want to purchase a decent distance rod of some sort...Ugly stick, Penn Guide, Ocean Master etc...Can you please let me know if any of these reels will do the trick? or would i be better off with a spinner?

Thanks!

WOW!!!!! nice collection of antique Penns...

Hold on to them, the sentimental value is "priceless" if they came from your Grandfather....

If you want to cast past the breakers, a good Daiwa Sealine X, will get you there and is very reliable reel in a baitcaster.. On an 8 or 10 ft + rod for distance casting in the surf... There are zillions of choices..

If spinning gear is more suited to you, then a good quality one (Shimano baitrunner or Daiwa) would be best in the harsh salt/sand conditions..... Again lots of choices...

Anything you use in the surf will get sand and salt in it.. Look for some quality and clean them well after each use... They wont last long... You can spend a lot, but I would keep in mind the damage salt & sand will do and spend less. Doesnt hurt so bad when you have to replace them in a year or three.......

I would clean Oil and store the ones you have, the boxes are worth more then the reels on Ebay.. But your Grandfather would love it if you honored him/them and passed them on to your children etc etc .... :thumb:

Thanks for your input. This fishing stuff is addicting! I also have some larger Penn reels ex. Senator but i figured it is deep sea stuff. I will definitely pass them down to the kids. I appreciate your help. :o

most definitely keep those reels. what a wicked collection!!!
again, if you want to get past those breakers, JapanRon hit it on the nail. use a reel you can cast with comfortably but if you are getting a casting reel (openface), try not to get a rod that is too whippy. that can help cause a backlash. The longer the rod the easier it will be to cast with a baitcasting/conventional far and without trouble.

whatever reel you choose, make sure you have a long rod, that will definietly help you get to thwere you wanna go

Definetly keep those reels for the sentimental values they have like Nessie said.

Personally, Iwould use a spinning reel for maximum distance especially if fishing from the beach.

If you ever want to sell that Squidder, drop me a PM.

Also Welcome to FNN

Thanks for all of the input guys! I saw some Daiwa casting rods at Sports Authority (10-15') that look mighty tempting. My wife thinks i am crazy. She doesnt believe i can catch a leopard or big bat ray...I want to prove her wrong! haha.

I use baitcaster reels almost exclusively because, to me, it's pride in being able to cast far without getting a birds nest (most of the time)!!! But, if I'm surf fishing, I always use a good Shimano spinning rig so's I can really fling it without the occasional backlash mess! In the surf, I try to time the cast so an incoming wave doesn't carry the bait towards me and with a baitcaster, sometimes I'm not as careful as I should be, resulting in a mess!

Each to his own, eh?
