View Full Version : 11/13 Eclipse - oh...my...COD

So, from my last Eclipse trip, i was so impressed by the captain and crew i told my manager at work (Jim) all about it and i convinced him to take a 1.5 day with me. Now that the Eclipse is up here in Orange County, 10 minutes from Irvine, we got our reserved our spots and eagerly awaited work to end on Friday 11/12.

Everything on this trip went our way. SUPER light load of 13 anglers. I actually met up with 3 cool guys i met on my last Eclipse trip - Ernie, Larry and Donald.

So, we all load up on the boat around 8pm and sign in. As we leave the dock, Torey the main deckhand comes down and gives us the speech. After that, Captain Rick comes down and gives us "the choice".

He says, "okay guys - as you know, Santa Barbara has seen a few Yellowtails still swimming around but it hasn't been as hot as it was last week. Tomorrow being Saturday, i'm afraid of SBI being bombarded with private and charter boats. I was planning on starting off the morning at SBI for a shot at some YT and WSB and then making a 3 hour ride down to San Nick for some all day codding action... OR we can put on the blinders and make a run for San Nick and cod all day long. It's up to you guys"

and before he could finish his last word, we all unanimously agreed "SAN NICHOLAS!!"

Captain Rick smiled and said, "I was hoping you guys would say that... well in that case, i know exactly where we're going and exactly what we're fishing for so here's the deal. I'll take you to the spots and you guys PLUG THE FISH HOLDS - deal? Deal.

Jim and i then got our gear ready. Rock cod rig on the 40# - Single dropper loop on the 30# and Sliding sinker with 3/0 on the 25#. We were fishing 300 ft to 60 ft of water.

The water was FLAT FLAT FLAT - allllll day long. It was surreal - almost... eerie how amazingly still the water was. What a waste of a patch.

Went to bed at 10pm. Woke up at 6 to the smell of Churizo and eggs, potatoes and sausage, bacon and hot coffee (William is the FRIEKIN' BOMB chef - if you don't want what he cooks, he'll give you an array of different things he'll make for you. Cooked to order when you want it).

Peered outside to see San Nick for the first time in my life. The appearance is not anything drastically different from Clemente but the codding WAS to say the least. No boat traffic at all - we saw the Ranger 85 out there, thats IT.

Lings, Cabbie's, Goats, Reds, Whites, Chocolates, Starry's, Blues, Boc's... FLYING over the rail. Some being bounced, some being gaffed. WFO on whatever you wanted.

Target fishing at it's finest. Want a Ling? Full live squid or Sardine on the bottom. Want a Red? Full dead squid on the bottom. Want a huge White fish? Double strips.

I swear - just as soon as it hit bottom - BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM.

My manager Jim caught - the BIGGEST Cabezon that i've ever seen. The picture you see doesn't do it justice. The thing was kicking and screaming when it hit the deck and it was SEVERELY OBESE. After coming back up from the fish hold at the end of the day, it lost weight (you know what i mean, the fish doesn't look as big or lively after sitting in the brine for hours).

We made 4 drifts - each lasting about an hour to 1.5 hours. Captain Rick would give us a heads up - "okay guys, you're gonna feel a little drop here so keep your lines tight" or "okay guys we're coming up on a high spot so if your line goes slack, reel it in some to keep your lines tight."

Since my return to fishing, i promised myself to stay in the water as long as possible to make each trip count. So there i stood - with my FNN t-shirt on (and the lucky charm that my gf gave me) and had the best codding trip of my life.

After about 11am, the deck hands (Torey, Victor and Steve) didn't even bother asking me what my number was - they just went for the #7 tag. Which btw, ran out of tags by the end of the day.

Before it got dark, the cap said we've move in REAL close to the beach to try our luck at flatties. We made 2 quick drifts with no love. Cap said the water was just too cold for Hal's.

But whatev... i was soooo exhausted and so were all the other guys.

Okay so my final count?

6 Lings
6 Goats
6 Reds
20 Assorted Cods

When we were all done, Captain Rick came down and he was so pleased with our numbers he had a special treat for us on the drive back home.

After Will cooked an amazing Chicken Fettucini Alfredo w/fresh veggies and dinner roll (and chocolate cake) - the deckhands changed the channel on the Satellite TV and we watched Manny Pacquaio beat the CRAP out of Antonio Margarito.

What a memorable and utterly awesome trip.

Till next time -

KK

p.s. - BIG THANKS to Captain Rick for putting us on the fish AGAIN - and especially to the crew who worked so hard serving us from beginning to end of the trip.

6 lings!!!! LOL!! I like how the deckie gaffed that one red!! Nice going Kev. Did you vacuum seal it all? You would always post pictures of the post-trip sashimi fest with the cold ones and the bloodshot eyes. Any of those?

Awesome trip!
I have fished many boats; the Eclipse is near the top of my list. I just really like the boat a lot. I fell in love with her as the Cat Special out of CISCO's, and she's close enough now to home in OC that I can fish her again.

CKK - It was nothing but good times man - good times. One of those trips to look back upon.

DockRat - That's the best explanation i could sum it up with. Simply - major carnage.

Coach - yeah 6 lings and regarding the gaff of the red... i ehhh was just being nice because i wanted to include the good looking deck hand steve in the picture... OKAY OKAY i was afraid my 15# inshore rod/line would snap because it kept getting frayed from the structure!!! i admitted it okay? lol

Marley - Eclipse is my #1 go to boat now. Spacious galley - Even more spacious bunks - hot shower - satellite TV - fountain soda machine (coke, diet coke, sweet tea, root beer, sprite, fanta) w/ice maker!! And the most helpful crew around. Time to plan the next trip.

Here's a few more pics i forgot to include. CHECK OUT THE PIC OF THE SHALLOW WATER LING - CAUGHT IN 70 FEET - IT'S A BEAUTIFUL ORANGE/BROZE COLOR.

Yo Robert, that's not even all of them - that picture is just the stern. When they brought out all the fish to sort them out, the fish lined the whole stern AND port side of the boat.

Dude, you had to be there - i mean, i knew we slayed but once they brought the stringers out from the fish hold it was INSANE! In the picture of me looking up to the camera, i accidentally kicked one of my fish through the scupper hole. Some lucky fish got to enjoy my catch.

Kevin,
This trip was amazing, I have Rockfish from it that I am taking back home to Kentucky for Thanksgiving this week. The Eclipse is definetly one of my favorite boats anywhere, the captain and crew work harder than anyone out there.
Thanks for the post and sharing your experience out of Davey's Locker,

Kentucky?? Man - can you imagine being landlocked? Enjoy you're family Dave - i'm sure they'll be stoked for the fish taco's.

How long do you think it would take you to crack if you weren't 30 minutes away from the ocean? oh how we take it for granted. I'm already Jones'in to go again. Next stop - Freelance.

The Eclipse has their next 1.5 Day departing on 11/26. i'll get you guys some more dates here in the near future.

Cmon Kevin... Pacquiao didnt beat the CRAP out of Margarito... I mean, PacMan is probably still peein blood because of those body shots he was receiving...I guess it doesnt matter, cuz he won regardless... But anyway...

As far as your trip is concerned, it was most impressive!!! As you know, I was out there on the Ranger 85 and we fared equally well on the taco meats!!! The only thing Im wondering is why the heck we were releasing all the Reds. The skipper was saying the whole time that we had to throw all the Reds back...

k3vin_kim
11-22-2010, 07:10 PM
oh dude come on now... L.A -

let's be fair here. Margarito got whupped! And given - yes - pacman took some good body shots - let's be real here... boxing matches, bar fights and street fights aren't judged by body shots - they're judged by how much damage the other guys face has. And Margarito's face looked like the ground beef i put into my daughter's hamburger helper.

As for fishing San Nick...

NO WONDER!!! WE FREE GAFFED ABOUT 8-9 GOOD SIZED REDS. We thought these chunky reds were falling from the sky?!?!?!!?!?!?

I don't know why the skipper would tell you to throw back the feesh? I'm pretty sure not everyone was too happy about this decision... i mean... it IS rockfishing afterall.

I heard Dan Hernandez was on your boat - is he as good as they say he is?

oh and btw, i was j/k about the free gaffing - we didn't see any reds floating around.

oh and btw, i was j/k about the free gaffing - we didn't see any reds floating around.HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Yeah, Margarito's face was pretty deformed after the fight, but Im sure PacMan's insides were just as messed up as Margarito's grill... If you havent read, Senator PacMan has been urinating blood and complaining bout his cracked ribs that Margarito put on him... And I dont know what kinda bar fights or street fights youve been in, but I think those fights are won by who's left standing, not by who's face is left the prettiest... Anyhow, they both got hurt, both in different ways, but in no way did PacMan beat the CRAP out of anyone like you described... Anyhow...

Yeah, man, Dan Hernandez was on the boat... It was his charter, after all!!! As for him being good, well, he was one of the hot sticks on the boat that day...

Yeah, man, Im still tryin to figure out why we had to toss all the reds back... Oh well, either way, it was great fishin out there that day!!!

If you guys have issues with each other, please address them through PM's and off the board.

My "issue" isn't with Kevin. I've been done with him 8-months ago when I never got a "how are you" text or call. I feel sorry for his beautiful innocent children that their dad is a jacka-s.

As a long time member of FNN, I thought you should know that one of its members is suffering. I thought you should also know that some of your members swept me under the rug when they found out I was sick.
I was doing you and fellow FNN members a favor.

Oh and by the way Arthur, thank you for the well wishes.
You'll probably be tempted to or will terminate my account.
So I'll get my last words in now.

Thank you all for all the years of fish porn and fish tales.
I'm glad that you enjoyed reading my reports when I was actively posting them.
It was always nice to see fellow FNNers on trips, people recognizing "Funjunkie" and the NBU.
I couldn't do much fishing in 2010 and 2011 isn't looking much bright yet.
But if I'm really lucky, I look forward to seeing on your next trip.

Tight lines and cast one out for me.

Joe, I sympathize with your situation and I can't even imagine the hardship that you've been going through. It's understandable why you are lashing out. But I don't think it serves a purpose or believe that it makes you feel better to chastise people who you say swept you under the rug. Don't waste your time on them because they're not important. Focus your energy on those who have stuck with you and stood by your side throughout your ordeal. Your family and true friends, they deserve the remainder of your attention and nobody else. We are all guilty of hoping that situations like yours happen to somebody else, to some other family, but sometimes they do hit home. I was reminded of how fragile life can be with the passing of 57.

You will be in my prayers tonight and thank you for the years of entertaining reports. I will remember them, and you...

When the time come, that you go to sleep with Angels... You shall live in the hearts of those who loved you and will thus never really die or be forgotten.

Arthur
