Despite the forecasted winds, I charged up to Pyramid to fish solo today. The howlin' winds never showed up, but the bass did - and they liked the chartreuse shad fly. Got all three types on that same fly. The fish went on the chew in the afternoon and got really aggressive. I cast into some areas with grebes snacking on small baitfish, and got surface takes by fired-up stripers. The smallies were pullin' hard like the little pigs they are, and a few bucketmouths joined the party - leapin' clear out of the water. All in all a fine day on the lake.

I can't take good pix when I'm fishing solo, but this pretty much tells the story.

Yes Sir... That simple shad pattern just plain works. But now that the trout plants have started, I'll be switching over to the big stuff - airheads, poledancers, etc.

Nice catch on the fly. They seem to like that fly up there.

I think i saw you out by the island pretty early. I was on a bass boat. Nice job on the striper! I've had good luck with the small mouth and large mouth, Not much luck on the striper last sunday though. Nice boat by the way!

Thanks! I found a mess of stripers out there off the island right where I saw you. Got at least a half dozen, almost a fish a cast for a while. Nothing huge, but it looked like it was a good spot to sit on, so I dropped anchor. Sure enough, they moved on me. I found them again later in the marina area. I find that I get a lot more strikes from suspended stripers when I strip the fly really hard. When I try to "rip the epoxy off the head" (of my fly), I get more grabs.

Viejo - I fish a 7wt most of the time. Lighter rods will work, schoolie stripers aren't hard to land on a 5wt. But when you need to get deep, you're going to be throwing heavier shooting heads, and that requires a heavier rod.
