You need to check to see if the island is open.

http://www.scisland.org/

Bring swimbaits in case you get some seals hanging out.
Went 2 weeks ago on a buddies 24' Ranger Bayrunner.
The friday we went LB and SP bait had no squid and none at Catalina Island.
Bring some squid. Also the day we went 3/4 of the island was closed for training.
Ended up with a bunch of nice Calicos, Sheephead, Whitefish (squid strips)
1/2 on sardines 1/2 on plastics. Fished the west offshore end near the rock.

We burned 80 gallons of gas 3 am to 3 pm it was the last day of the heat wave
and like a lake. Mercury 250 Verado is a thirsty supercharged motor.

WSB and YT maybe ?

hmmm - SCI was off limits due to navy activity - SBI was jam packed like a parking lot...

so - we ended up going to San Nick and it PAID OFF!

Hey Kevin,

Just FYI, we fished SCI on Friday the 12th. The lack of current made for a funky morning bite but the afternoon was a bit better. We got plenty of the standard bottom stuff - reds to around 7#, steamer-sized starrys/chilis/chucks - but only one ling that won JP and a few other miscellaneous critters like scullys, sheeps, and stinky bocs. Didn't try shallow for bass, and since we didn't have any live squid, no attempt for the exotics. SCI might've been good for you guys if you could have gone, but it sounds like it was the right call to run to San Nic.
