So i was supposed to meet up with bebop(bob) yesterday around 4:30 to buy a rod from him and he's in tustin so i figured, why not fish NPH right after? i mean i'm already there.
So before i left for bobs i loaded up all my gear(minus my 1/4oz bullet weights which i love for the harbor:Confused:) and I left at 2:30 for bobs.
Well after 2and a half hours, i arrive at bob's house at about 5pm. We make our exchange and i was off for newport harbor, I met up with dan(swank 909) at carls jr and had some food, and off we went to our spot.
We got to our first spot around 630 and noticed the tide was EXTREMELY low, boats were on sand, the beaches were fully visible, we figured we would be skunked for sure. But we started fishing, i was dropshotting robos for a few missed hits.
kept moving and noticed my leader was getting frayed, so i retied and went to a leadhead and gulp. about 15 mins later dan(swank 909) swings hard and has a fish on, it was splashing all over the place. He brings it up and she was a decent size spottie. The skunk is now off for dan.

I knew it was just a matter of time before i got hit, i realized i ran out of my go-to bait once we got there and i had to use my 2nd choice. we reached this little open section with a nice little corner, i pitched my bait right into the corner, jigged it up toward the middle of the area i was fishing and BAM got struck, i didnt get a good hookset on it and was worried i was going to lose it. I was reeling in and felt like it was a hali due to what felt like headshakes.
I see color and it turns out to be a tiny 7 of 8" long spottie. Oh well, skunk off.
We worked the rest of our area for about an hour for nothing, pitching into every corner, under docks, next to boats, for NOTHING
until i decided to use my secret JDM bait on a texas rig:Secret:
tied this bait on, pitched it out behind some tied on boats, let if fall, reel in a bit, and WHAM im hit hard, i sweepset the hook and feel my owner cutting point slide like butter through the fish's jaw. It peels drag for a second, and i thought it was a bigger model, but then he gave up and i brought him in easy.
Turned out to be my first sand bass out of the harbor.

We didnt get anymore fish after that, but the trip was worth it.
