Freedom 11/1 SBI YELLOWS!!!!

Capt. Tom Lee said he is taking us trick or treating at Santa Barbara islands. He wanted to fill our bags with fat yellowtails. We were tanked up with live squids. Man was i excited! The First spot was mud. You get love on the 30lb rig here. I boated 2 in this area. Both yellows was very stubborn. I was up and down the rail for the most part. These yellows didn't run for open water. They went for the anchor. Almost lost my 2nd fish to the anchor. Sal was able pull up enough anchor line so they can gaff it. We had a nice wsb flurry after the yellows left. I was on a fish during the flurry but pulled hooked after about 30 seconds. Bummer.... Biggest bisquit was 35lbs. We still lost quite a few fish on this spot. I saw one guy dump 3 fish on light line. Captain said your done with that rig. Here's my personal rod with 50.... lol There was some tangles but for the most part it was manageable. We had at least 30 yellows and 12 wsb before we moved to the next area.
2nd spot was structure fishing.The bigger fish came out of this spot. Nothing less than 40 on this spot. If you cant turn their heads the first 10 seconds you are cornholed!! lol I was lucky enough to get bit and turn the fish my way. I kept turning the handle while keeping a good bend. I pulled like crazy here. lol I fished hard and stayed busy for the most part. I kept my bait moving or fluttering. Not a WFO bite but everyone pretty much had their chances. These fish werent line shy. People fishing 40 n 50 were having good counts. I tried fishing the 25 & 30 when the action is slow but never got bit. I was very thankful to get 3. Jackpot fish was 38 something. Same guy that got JP scored 7 on the yellows. I learned a lot and had a blast. FREEDOM Does it again!!! Thanks for putting us on some bruisers....

Nice report. I'm headed out at the end of this week.

What size/style hooks we're you using?
Any fish off the dropper loop or are they all biting the 1/2 ounce slider?
Are they mid depth, top or bottom?

Someone got 2 fish on the dropper. For the most part i used Owner gorilla light 4/0 pinned one time. Most people were using 2/0 with squid twisted. I had 3 setups.
Avet SX on Phenix 808 with 25lb izor and 1/8 ounce slider. I also tried carolina rig with 1/4 ounce and 30 flouro leader on that setup.
Avet MXJ with Phenix 809 30lb izor and 1/4 ounce slider.
JX 4.6 on Phenix 700H with 1/2 ounce slider.
I fished smaller hooks on my lighter setups( 2/0 Owner gorilla light)twisted on. All 3 fish was on the JX with 40lb and 1/2 ounce slider. I had one fish mid depth. I had just casted and on its way down when i got picked up. My first yellow was after i had made 4 cranks off the bottom and the other while the current was taking out off the bottom too. Hope this helps...

thanks for the info. I'm taking my sister on her first overnight trip on the Eclipse. This will hopefully be her first time catching a wsb or Yellowtail. I'll relay your tips to her and hopefully it works out. I really appreciate the info.

Thanks, Tom Lee has great work ethics. True team player... He was cutting up squid, chumming, gaffing, fixing tangles and filleting fish.... Hard working Captain.
